पच्यन्ते येषु तान्वक्ष्ये भयङ्करफलप्रदान्
I will describe those in which beings are cooked, which bestow terrifying results.
कुम्भघीपाको निरुच्छ्वासः कालसूत्रः प्रमर्दनः
Kumbhīpāka, Nirucchvāsa, Kālasūtra, Pramardana—
मूषावस्था वसाकूपस्तथा वैतरणी नदी
Mūṣāvasthā, Vasākūpa, and the river Vaitaraṇī—
तत्पशूलं तत्पशिला शाल्मलीद्रुम एव च
That Paśūla, that Paśilā, and the Śālmalī tree as well—
स्वमांसभोजनं चैव वह्निज्वालानिवेशनम्
Eating one’s own flesh and dwelling amidst flames—
क्षारोदकं चोष्णतोयं तत्पायः पिण्डभभणम्
Briny water, hot water, that milk, and eating balls of food—
तथा पाशाणवर्णं च कृमिभोजनमेव च
And the stone-colored hell, as well as eating worms—
पुरीषलेपनं चैव पुरीषस्य च भोजनम्
Smearing with excrement and eating excrement—
धूमपानं पाशबन्धं नानाशूलानुलेपनम्
Drinking smoke, binding with ropes, and smearing with various spikes—
बहूनि काष्ठयन्त्राणि कषणं छेदनं तथा
Many wooden devices, grinding, and cutting as well—
गजदन्तप्रहरणं नानासर्पैश्च दंशनम्
Striking with elephant tusks and being bitten by various serpents.
घोरक्षाराम्बुपानं च तथा लवणभक्षणम्
Drinking dreadful alkaline water and likewise consuming salt.
क्षाराम्बुपूर्णरन्ध्राणां प्रवेशं मांसभोजनम्
Entering holes filled with alkaline water and eating flesh.
वृक्षाग्रात्पातनञ्चैव जलान्तर्मज्जनं तथा
Being thrown from the tops of trees and likewise being submerged in water.
पिपीलिकादंशनं च वृश्चिकैश्चापि पीडनम्
Being bitten by ants and tormented also by scorpions.
कर्द्दमे शयनं चैव दुर्गन्धपरिपूरणम्
Lying in mud and being filled with foul odors.
अत्युष्णतैलपानं च महाकटुनिषेवणम्
Drinking excessively hot oil and consuming extremely pungent substances.
अत्युष्णशीतस्नानं च तथा दशनशीर्णनम्
Bathing in water that is extremely hot or cold, and having one's teeth shattered.
एवमाद्यामहाभाग यातनाः कोटिकोटिशः
O illustrious one, such torments as these exist by the tens of millions.
एतेषु यस्य यत्प्रात्पं पापिनः क्षितिरक्षक
Among these, whatever suffering is appropriate for a sinner, O protector of the earth,
ब्रह्महा च सुरापी च स्तेयी च गुरुतल्पगः
A slayer of a Brahmin, a drinker of liquor, a thief, or one who violates the teacher's bed—
पन्तिभेदीवृथापाकी नित्यं ब्रह्मणदूषकः
One who breaks ranks, one who cooks for no purpose, and one who always reviles Brahmins—
एश्चान्नास्तीति यो ब्रुयात्तमाहुर्ब्रह्मघातिनम्
And whoever says, 'There is no food,' they declare him a slayer of Brahman.
समायात्यन्तरायत्वं तमाहुर्ब्रह्मधातिनम्
He who causes obstruction is called a destroyer of Brahman.
असत्यनिरतश्वचैव ब्रह्महा परिकीर्तितः
One who is always devoted to falsehood is also called a Brahmin-slayer.
अन्योद्वेगरतश्चैव अन्येषां दोषसूवकः
One who delights in disturbing others and in pointing out the faults of others.
नित्यं प्रतिग्रहरतस्तथा प्राणिवधे रतः
One who is always eager to accept gifts and intent on killing living beings.
ब्रह्महत्या समं पापमेव बहुविधं नृप
O king, all these various sins are equal to the slaying of a Brahmin.
गणान्नभोजनं चैव गणिकानां निषेवणम्
Eating food from guilds and associating with courtesans.
उपासमापरित्यागो देवलानां च भोजनम्
Abandoning the company of spiritual guides and partaking of food meant for deities.
