इत्येवं जल्पितं यैस्तु तान्निरस्य समन्ततः
Those who thus speak are refuted by him in every way.
संबोधयित्वा बहुशः प्रजानां सुखहेतवे
Having repeatedly instructed the people for their happiness,
शास्त्रदृष्ट्या तु विदुषो मूर्खान्दण्डनपूर्वकम्
According to the scriptures, the wise should punish the foolish.
तेन मे न सुखं किञ्चिदवलीढं धरातले
Because of this, I have not enjoyed even a little happiness on earth.
स्वेभ्यो वापि परेभ्यो वा या रक्षेच्च प्रजा नृपः
Whether from his own people or from others, the king must protect his subjects.
सो ऽहं प्रजाकृते सौम्य संस्थितो नात्मनः क्वचित्
Therefore, gentle one, I have acted for the sake of the people, never for myself.
न पानद्यूतजं पुत्र कामये ऽहं कदाचन
Never, my son, have I desired pleasures arising from drinking or gambling.
त्वत्प्रसादादहं पुत्र मृगयाव्याजतो ऽधुना
By your favor, my son, I have now come under the pretext of hunting.
भोक्तुकामः प्रियान्कामांस्त्वयि भारं निवेश्य च
Desiring to enjoy beloved pleasures, I have entrusted the burden to you.
कृते तव महाकीर्तिरकृते नरकस्थितिः
If you act, you will gain great fame; if not, you will dwell in hell.
गुर्वीं राज्यधुरं तात त्वदीयामुद्धराम्यहम्
My son, I am lifting your heavy royal burden.
पितुर्वाक्यमकुर्वाणः कुर्वन्धर्मानधो व्रजेत्
He who does not carry out his father's command, though acting righteously, falls down.
एवमुक्ते तु वचने राजा हृष्टो बभूव ह
When these words were spoken, the king became delighted.
धर्माङ्गदो ऽपि दृष्टात्मा प्रजा आहूय चाब्रवीत्
Dharmāṅgada, self-controlled, summoned the people and spoke.
पितुर्वाक्यं मया कार्यं सर्वथा धर्ममिच्छता
Desiring righteousness, I must always carry out my father's command.
मयि दण्डधरे शास्ता न यमो भवति क्वचित्
When I, the wielder of punishment, am the ruler, Yama is never needed.
ब्रह्मार्पणप्रयोगेण यजनीयो जनार्दनः
By offering to Brahman, Janārdana should be worshipped.
येन वो ह्यक्षया लोका भवेयुर्नात्र संशयः
By this, you will surely attain imperishable worlds—of this there is no doubt.
ब्रह्मार्पणक्रियायुक्ता भवन्तु ज्ञानकोविदाः
Let those skilled in knowledge perform acts accompanied by offering to Brahman.
विशेषो हि मयाख्यातो भवतां ब्रह्मसंस्थितिः
I have explained to you in detail the special state of union with Brahman.
यदुपोष्यं हरिदिनं तदवश्यमिति स्थितिः
It is established that the day of Hari must certainly be observed.
न दिवा न च शर्वर्यां शेते धर्मां गदः सदा
He who is afflicted by righteousness never sleeps, neither by day nor by night.
पटहो रटते नित्यं मृगारिरिपुमस्तके
The drum resounds constantly on the head of the enemy of deer.
त्रिविधेषु च कार्येषु देवेशश्चिन्त्यतां हरिः
In all three kinds of actions, one should contemplate Hari, the Lord of the gods.
सूर्ये यो हि कृशाकाशे विसर्गे जगतां पतिः
He who is the Lord of the worlds, slender in form in the sun, at the time of dissolution—
स्वजातिविहितो ऽप्येवं सन्मार्गे चैव माधवः
Even if prescribed by one's own tradition, Mādhava is to be followed on the righteous path.
विनियोगस्तु तस्यैव सर्वकर्मसु युज्यते
The dedication of all actions is indeed to Him alone.
एवं धर्ममवाप्याथ पितां धर्माङ्गदस्य हि
Thus, having attained righteousness, the father of Dharmāṅgada—
उवाच भार्यां संहृष्टः स्थितां लक्ष्मीमिवापराम्
Spoke joyfully to his wife, who stood before him like another Lakṣmī.
उभयोर्जनितः पुत्रः शशाङ्कधवलः क्षितौ
A son was born to both, white as the moon, upon the earth.
