कूर्मास्थिघर्षता येन पावको जनितो महान्
By the friction of the tortoise’s bones, a great fire was produced there.
न देवैर्दानवैर्वापि दृष्टो यो हि द्विजोत्तमाः
O best of twice-born, neither gods nor demons have ever seen it.
केयूरघर्षणे येन कृतं देवस्य चक्रिणः
By the rubbing of bracelets, the discus-bearing god’s adornment was made there.
रत्नानां मन्दिरं ह्येष बहुधातुसमन्वितः
Indeed, this is the abode of jewels, endowed with many kinds of precious metals.
सुराङ्गनानां रतिवर्द्धनो यो रत्नौषधीनां प्रभवो गिरिर्महान्
This great mountain, source of gem-medicines, increases the delight of the celestial women.
दैर्घ्येण तावन्ति हि योजनानि त्रैलोक्ययष्टीव समुच्छ्रितो ऽसौ
In length, it rises as many yojanas as the pillar of the three worlds.
यस्मिन्गतः कश्य पनन्दनो वै विरश्मितामेति विनष्टतेजाः
Whoever enters it, O son of Kaśyapa, loses their radiance and their splendor fades.
सूर्यतेजोनिहन्तारं मन्दरं तेजसा स्वयम्
Mandara itself, by its own brilliance, diminishes the radiance of the sun.
नीलकान्तिमये दिव्ये सप्तयोजनविरतृते
It is divine, composed of sapphire-blue luster, and stretches for seven yojanas.
दशहस्त प्रमाणं हि विस्तरादूर्द्ध्वसंख्यया
Its measure is ten hastas in width and height, by count.
तस्मिन्बाला द्विजश्रेष्ठाश्चक्रे संगीतमुत्तमम्
On that mountain, O best of twice-born, maidens performed excellent music.
समीपवर्तिनी तस्य भूत्वा लिङ्गस्य भामिनी
A radiant woman, becoming near to the liṅga, stood close by.
तस्मिन्प्रवृत्ते राजेन्द्रगीते मन्मथवर्द्धने
When that song began, O king, it increased the power of love.
न च दैवं न चादैवं गीतं तादृग्बभूव ह
Neither by fate nor by effort had such a song ever arisen.
मोहिनीमुखनिर्गीतं गीतं सत्वविमोहनम्
A song flowed from Mohini's mouth, enchanting the minds of all beings.
कामातुरो भोक्तुमनाश्चचाल तां मोहिनीं पार्वतिदृष्टिलज्जः
Overcome by desire and intent on enjoyment, he approached Mohini, restrained by shame before Parvati's gaze.
संपूज्य बहुशो देवं पीतांबरधरं हरम्
Having repeatedly worshipped the god Hara, clad in yellow garments,
कृत्वा शून्यं यमपथं जित्वा वैवस्वतं यमम्
and having emptied the path of Yama, conquering Vaivasvata Yama,
आहूय तनयं काले धर्माङ्गदमभाषत
he summoned his son at the proper time and spoke to Dharmangada.
परिपालय वीर्येण स्वधर्मे कृतनिश्चयः
Protect, with strength, your own dharma, firmly resolved.
तस्य धर्मस्तथा कीर्तिर्विनस्यति न संशयः
His dharma and fame perish—of this there is no doubt.
अवश्य पातकी सो ऽपि विज्ञेयो भुवनत्रये
Even he must be known as a sinner in all three worlds.
मातुरुच्चारवज्जातो द्विजिह्वो विषवर्जितः
Born like his mother's excretion, two-tongued, devoid of poison.
प्रकाशयति सर्वत्र स्वकरैरिव भास्करः
He illuminates everywhere with his own hands, like the sun.
स पुत्रो नरकं याति यावदाभूतसंप्लवम्
That son goes to hell until the dissolution of all beings.
स याति देव सायुज्यं स्तूयमानो दिवि स्थितैः
He attains union with the gods, praised by those dwelling in heaven.
न भुक्तं नैव सुप्तं तु स्वेच्छया पालने स्थितः
He neither eats nor sleeps at will, remaining steadfast in protection.
विष्णुवासरभोक्तॄणां निग्रहे कृतबुद्धिना
With resolved mind, he restrains those who partake of Vishnu's days.
विरिञ्चिमार्गगाश्चान्ये पार्वत्याश्च स्थिताः परे
Others follow the path of Virinchi, and some remain with Parvati.
बालो युवा वा वृद्धो वा गुर्विणी वा कुमारिका
Whether child, youth, old man, pregnant woman, or maiden,
