कथं शासति दुर्मेधास्तस्य वासरसेविनम्
How can the wicked-minded rule over one who enjoys the essence of the day?
तदस्माकं कृतं मानं मे तत्त्वं नावबुध्यसे
This honor was done by us; you do not understand its true nature.
कृत्स्नायासेन संयुक्तः स तैर्निग्राह्यते पुनः
He, burdened with complete effort, is again restrained by them.
स्वामिप्रसादात्सिद्धास्ते विनिन्युर्व्वै नियोगिनम्
By the master's grace, those accomplished ones led the appointed one.
कथं संयमिता तेषां बाल्याद्भास्करनन्दन
How are they restrained from childhood, O son of the Sun?
करोमि तव साहाय्यं हरिभक्तैर्न भास्करे
I shall assist you, but not with devotees of Hari, O Sun.
सर्वेषामेव देवानामादिस्तुपुरुषोत्तमः
Among all the gods, the Supreme Person is the foremost.
व्याजेनापि कृता यैस्तु द्वादशी पक्षयोर्द्वयोः
Even by pretense, those who observe the twelfth day in either fortnight,
विपर्ययो ब्रह्मपदात्सुपुण्यात्कृतेव मार्गे सह विष्णुभक्तैः
If there is a reversal from the state of Brahma, then, by great merit, it is as if performed on the path together with devotees of Vishnu.
नाहं गच्छामि योगान्तं पुनरेव जगत्पते
I do not reach the end of yoga, O Lord of the world, again.
तमेकं देवताश्रेष्ठं संप्राप्ते हरिवासरे
When the day of Hari arrives, I approach that one, the highest among the gods.
स मे शत्रुर्महान्देव तेन लुप्तः पटो मम
He is my great enemy, O god; because of him, my garment was lost.
कृतकृत्यो भविष्यामि गयापिण्डप्रदो यथा
I shall become accomplished, as one who gives the funeral offering at Gaya.
उपोषितः स्तुतोवापि न नियम्या मया हि ते
Whether fasting or praised, they are not to be restrained by me.
सौतिरुवाच
The sūta said:
र्चितयामास देवेशो विरिञ्चिः कुशलाञ्छनः
The lord of the gods, Virinchi, skilled in creation, fashioned them.
भूतत्रासनमात्रं तु रूपं स जगृहे विभुः
The mighty one assumed a form solely to instill fear among beings.
सर्वयोषिद्वरा देवीमनसा निर्भिता बभौ
The goddess, foremost among all women, shone, her mind unshaken.
दृष्ट्वा पितामहस्तां तु रूपद्रविणसंयुताम्
Seeing her, adorned with beauty and wealth, the grandsire gazed upon her.
प्रत्यवायभयाद्ब्रह्या चक्षुषी संन्यमीलयत्
Out of fear of sin, Brahmā closed his eyes.
चिन्तयेद्वीक्षयेद्वापि जननीं वा सुतामपि
If one contemplates or gazes upon one's mother or even one's daughter,
स याति नरकं घोरं संचिन्त्य श्वपचीमपि
He goes to a dreadful hell, even by thinking of a woman of low caste.
तस्य जन्मकृतं पुण्यं वृथा भवति नान्यथा
The merit earned from birth becomes wasted; it cannot be otherwise.
पुण्यस्य संक्षयात्पापी पाषाणाखुर्भवेद्ध्रुवम्
With the depletion of merit, the sinner surely becomes as hard as stone.
जनन्या अपि पादौ तु नादेयौ द्वादशाब्दिकैः
Even the feet of one's mother should not be touched by a twelve-year-old.
षष्ट्यतीतां सुतो ऽभ्यङ्गे नियुञ्जीत विचक्षणः
After sixty years, a wise son may perform anointing for her.
उभयोः पतनं प्रोक्तं रौरवे ऽङ्गारसंचये
The fall of both is declared, into Raurava, among heaps of embers.
वधूहस्तेन यः पापः पादशौचं करोति हि
He who, with the hand of a bride, performs the cleansing of feet commits sin.
सूचीमुखैः कृष्णवक्त्रोर्भुज्यते कल्पसंस्थितिम्
He is devoured by black-faced beings with needle-like mouths for a kalpa.
साभिलाषेण मनसा तत्क्षणात्पतते नरः
With desire in the mind, a man falls at that very moment.
