अथवा सत्यगाथेयं लौकिकी प्रतिभाति नः
Or perhaps this worldly saying, which is true, appears to us:
नहि दुष्कृतकर्मा हि नरः प्राप्नोति शोभनम्
Indeed, a man of evil deeds does not attain what is good.
लोकानां समचित्तानां मतं ज्ञात्वा हि वेधसः
Having understood the opinion of the impartial among the worlds, indeed, of the Creator.
भुजाभ्यां साधुपीनाभ्यां लोकमूर्तिरुदारधीः
With arms well-formed and strong, the noble-minded form of the world.
सकायस्थमुवाचेदं व्योममूर्तिं रवेः सुतम्
He addressed the sky-form, the son of the Sun, while remaining with his companions.
केनापमार्जितो देवपटो लोकपटस्तव
By whom has your divine garment, the garment of the world, been cleansed?
अपनेष्यति मार्तण्डे दुःखं हृदयसंस्थितम्
The pain residing in the heart will be removed by the Sun.
विलोक्य वक्त्रं कुशकेतुसूनोः सगद्गदं मन्दमुदीरयन्वचः
Seeing the face of Kuśaketu’s son, he spoke words slowly, with a faltering voice.
मरणादधिकं देव यत्प्रतापस्य खण्डनम्
O god, the destruction of glory is worse than death.
अन्धकूपे निपतति स चाशु नरके ध्रुवम्
He falls into a blind pit and quickly, certainly, into hell.
प्रभोर्वित्तं समश्नाति स भवेत्काष्ठकीटकः
He who consumes the wealth of the Lord becomes a worm in wood.
नियोगी नरकं याति यावत्कल्पशतत्रयम्
The one appointed goes to hell for three hundred kalpas.
भवेद्वेश्मनि मन्दात्मा आखुः कल्पशतत्रयम्
He becomes a dull-minded mouse in a house for three hundred kalpas.
भृत्यान्वै कर्मकरणे राज्ञो मार्जारतां व्रजेत्
Indeed, among the king’s servants, in performing tasks, he attains the state of a cat.
पुण्येन पुण्यकर्तारं पापं पापेन कर्मणा
By virtue, one obtains the doer of virtue; by sin, the sinful deed.
कल्पादौ वर्तमानस्य यावद्यावद्दिनं तव
At the beginning of the kalpa, for as many days as are yours.
कर्तुं रुक्माङ्गदेनाद्य पराभूतो हि भूभुजा
Today, defeated by Rukmāṅgada, the king is unable to act.
न भुङ्क्ते वासरे विष्णोः सर्वपापप्रणाशने
He does not eat on the day of Viṣṇu, which destroys all sins.
विहाय देवपूजां च तीर्थस्नानादिकस्त्रियाम्
Abandoning worship of the gods, bathing at holy places, and other acts, for a woman.
त्यक्त्वा स्वाध्यायहोमांश्च कृत्वा पापानि भूरिशः
Having given up study and offerings, committing many sins.
मनुजाः पितृभिः सार्द्धं तथैव च पितामहैः
Humans go together with their fathers and likewise with their grandfathers.
तथा मातामहा यान्ति मातुर्ये जनकादयः
In the same way, they go with their maternal grandfathers, and with the ancestors on their mother's side.
एतद्दुःखं पुनर्देव मम मर्मविभेदनम्
This sorrow again, O god, pierces the core of my being.
पितॄणां बीजतो यस्माद्धात्र्या कुक्षौ धृतो यतः
Because from the seed of the fathers, one is carried in the womb of the mother.
ततो ऽन्यस्य कृतं ब्रह्मन्बीजं धात्रीसमुद्भवम्
Therefore, O Brahman, the seed produced by another, arising from the womb, is not theirs.
न भार्याया भवेद्वीजं न भार्या कुक्षिधारिणी
The wife does not have the seed, nor does the wife carry it in her womb.
जामातुः पुण्यमाहात्म्यत्तिन मे शिरसो रुजा
Because of the merit and greatness of the son-in-law, I have no pain in my head.
एकादश्युपवासी यः स मां त्यक्त्वा व्रजेद्धरिम्
He who observes the Ekadashi fast, leaving me, goes to Hari.
त्यक्त्वा तु मामकं मार्गं प्रयाति हरिमन्दिरम्
Abandoning my path, he goes to the temple of Hari.
न तीर्थैर्नापि दानैर्वा न व्रतैर्विष्णुवर्जितैः
Not by pilgrimages, nor by gifts, nor by vows devoid of Vishnu—
