व्याजेनापि मुनुश्रेष्ठ द्वादश्यां समुपोषिताः
Even by pretense, O best of sages, those who fast on the twelfth day,
द्वादशीसेवनाल्लोकाः प्रायान्ति हरिमन्दिरम्
By observing the Dvādaśī, people attain the abode of Hari.
कृत हि नरकाः शून्या लोकाश्चापि दिवौकसाम्
Indeed, the hells have become empty, and the worlds of the gods as well.
एकादश्युपवासस्य माहात्म्येन द्विजोत्तम
By the greatness of fasting on Ekādaśī, O best of twice-born,
समुपोष्य दिनं विष्णोः प्रयान्ति हरिमन्दिरम्
Having fasted on Viṣṇu's day, they go to the abode of Hari.
नेत्रहीनः कर्णहीनः संध्याहीनो द्विजो यथा
Just as a twice-born without eyes, without ears, or without the twilight rites,
त्यक्तकामस्त्वहं ब्रह्मंल्लोकपालत्वमीदृशम्
Having abandoned desire, O Brahman, I hold this office of guardian of the worlds.
निर्व्यापारो नियोगी तु नियोगे यस्तु तिष्ठति
He who is inactive but appointed, and he who remains in the appointment,
एवमुक्त्वा यमो विप्रा नारदेन समन्वितः
Having thus spoken, Yama, accompanied by Nārada, O brāhmaṇas,
स ददर्श समासीनं मूर्तामूरतजनावृतम्
He beheld one seated, surrounded by embodied and disembodied beings,
स्वभवं भूतनिलयमोङ्काराख्यमकल्मषम्
The abode of beings, pure, known as Oṃkāra, his own nature,
उपास्यमानं विविधैर्लोकपालैर्दिगीश्वरैः
Worshipped by various guardians of the worlds and lords of the directions,
मूर्तिमद्भिः समुद्रैश्य नदीभिश्च सरोवरैः
By the oceans possessing form, by rivers and by lakes,
वापीकूपतडागाद्यैर्मूर्तिमद्भिश्च पर्वतैः
By ponds, wells, tanks, and by mountains possessing form.
कलाकाष्ठानिमेषैश्च ऋतुभिश्चायनैर्युगैः
By divisions of time such as kalās, kāṣṭhās, and nimeṣas, as well as by seasons, solstices, and yugas,
ऋक्षैर्योगैश्च करणैः पौर्णमासेंदुसंक्षयैः
By constellations, planetary conjunctions, lunar days, full moons, and wanings of the moon,
सत्यानृतैश्च देवेशो वेष्टितो धर्मपावकः
The Lord of gods, the fire of righteousness, is surrounded by truth and falsehood.
सत्त्वेन रजसा चैव तमसा च पितामहः
The Grandfather is enveloped by sattva, rajas, and also tamas.
वायुना श्लेष्मपित्ताभ्यां मूर्तैरातङ्कनामभिः
By wind, phlegm, and bile, and by forms known as diseases,
अनुक्तैरपि भूतैश्च संवृतो लोककृत्स्वयम्
And even by unspoken beings, the creator of the worlds is himself surrounded.
तेषां मध्ये ऽविशत्सौरिः सव्रीडेव वधूर्यथा
Among them, Sauri entered, like a modest bride, bashful.
ते प्रविष्टं यमं दृष्ट्वा सकायस्थं सनारदम्
Seeing Yama, entered and present with his body, along with Nārada,
संप्राप्तो हि लोककरं द्रष्टुं देवं पितामहम्
For he had come to see the god, the Grandfather, the creator of the worlds.
सो ऽयमभ्यागतः कस्मात्कञ्चित्क्षेमं दिवौकसाम्
This one has arrived—why has he come, bringing some welfare for the gods?
लेखकः समनुप्राप्तो दैन्येन महतान्वितः
The scribe arrived, afflicted with great dejection.
यन्न दृष्टं श्रुन्त वापि तदिहैव प्रदृश्यते
That which was neither seen nor heard before is now revealed here.
निपपाताग्रतो विप्रा ब्रह्मणो रविनन्दनः
The son of the Sun, having fallen before Brahmā, O brāhmaṇas,
परिभूतो ऽस्मि देवेश यन्मार्जितपटः कृतः
O Lord of gods, I have been insulted, for my record has been erased.
एवं ब्रुवन्स निश्चेष्टो बभूव द्विजसंत्तमाः
Speaking thus, he became motionless, O best of twice-born.
योर्ऽथं रोदयते लोकान्सर्वान्स्थावरज गमान्
He who causes all beings, moving and unmoving, to weep for wealth,
