तथा हि वेधं विबुधास्त्यजन्ति तिथ्यन्तरं धर्मविवृद्धये सदा
Thus, the wise always abandon a tithi with vedha for the sake of the increase of dharma.
यया तोषं समायाति प्रददाति समीहितम्
By which one attains satisfaction and gives what is desired,
कर्मणा केन स प्रीतो भवेद्यः सचराचरः
By what act does He, who is both moving and unmoving, become pleased?
भक्त्या संपूजितो विष्णुः प्रददाति मनोरथम्
When worshipped with devotion, Vishnu grants the heart's desire.
जनेनापि जगन्नाथः पूजितः क्लेशहा भवेत्
Even when worshipped by ordinary people, the Lord of the universe becomes the remover of suffering.
अत्रापि श्रूयते विप्रा आख्यानं पापनाशनम्
Here too, O Brahmins, is heard a story that destroys sin.
आसीद्ग्रुक्माङ्गदो राजा सार्वभौमः क्षमान्वितः
There was a king named Grukmāṅgada, sovereign of all, endowed with forbearance.
नान्यं पश्यति देवेशात्पद्मनाभान्महीपतिः
The king saw no other deity than Padmanabha, the Lord of the gods.
अष्टवर्षाधिको यस्तु पञ्चाशीत्यूनवर्षकः
He who is older than eight years but younger than eighty-five,
स मे दण्ड्यश्चग वध्यश्च निर्वास्यो नगराद्बहिः
Such a person is liable to punishment, to execution, or to exile from the city.
पद्मनाभदिने भोक्ता निग्राह्यो दस्युवद्भवेत्
On the day of Padmanabha, one who eats must be restrained, as if he were a thief.
ममेद वचनं शृत्वा राज्यं भुञ्जीत मामकम्
Having heard these words of mine, let him enjoy my kingdom.
अशुक्ले तु विशेषेण पटहे हेमसंपुटे
Especially not on white cloth, but on a drum with a golden cover,
गच्छिद्भिः संकुलो मार्गः कृतो कृतो लोकैर्हरेर्द्विजाः
The path becomes crowded with those going, made so by people, O twice-born, for the sake of Hari.
ज्ञानात्प्रमादतो वापि ते यान्ति हरिमन्दिरम्
Whether through knowledge or by mistake, they go to the temple of Hari.
व्याजेनापि प्रकुर्वाणैर्द्वादशीं पापनाशिनीम्
Even those who observe the twelfth day, destroyer of sins, by pretense,
स प्राप्नोति धराधर्मं यो नाश्नाति हरेर्दिने
He attains the law of the earth who does not eat on the day of Hari.
एकादश्यां न भोक्तव्यं पक्षयोरुभयोरपि
One should not eat on the eleventh day, on either fortnight.
लेख्यकर्मणि विश्रान्तश्चित्रगुप्तो ऽभवत्तदा
At that time, Citragupta ceased from his work of writing.
गच्छन्ति वैष्णवं लोकं स्वधर्मैर्मानवाः क्षणात्
Men, by their own duties, instantly go to the world of Vishnu.
भग्नो याम्यो ऽभवन्मार्गो द्वादशादित्यतापितः
The path to Yama was broken, scorched by the heat of the twelve suns.
देवा नामपि ये लोकास्ते शून्या ह्यभवंस्तथा
Even the worlds of the gods became empty in the same way.
मुक्त्वैकां द्वादशीं मर्त्या नान्यं जानन्ति ते व्रतम्
Except for the twelfth day, mortals know no other vow.
नारदो धर्मराजानं गत्वा चेदमुवाच ह
Narada, having gone to the king of righteousness, spoke these words.
न चापि क्रियते लेख्यं किञ्चिद्दुष्कृतकर्मणाम्
And no record is made at all of the deeds of the wicked.
कारणं किं न चायान्ति पापिनो येन ते गृहम्
What is the reason that sinners do not come to your house?
एवमुक्ते तु वचने नारदेन महात्मना
When these words were spoken by the great-souled Nārada,
यो ऽयं नारद भूपालः पृथिव्यां सांप्रतं स्थितः
This king, O Nārada, who now stands upon the earth,
प्रबोधयति राजेन्द्रः स जनं पटहेन हि
The lord of kings awakens the people with the sound of the drum,
ये केचिद्भुञ्जते मर्त्यास्ते मे दण्डेषु यान्ति हि
Whoever among mortals partakes of food, they fall under my punishments.
