वापीकूपतडागानि देवतायतनानि च
Reservoirs, wells, ponds, and temples for deities,
शुक्लाया आहरेन्मूत्रं कृष्णाया गोः शकृत्तथा
One should bring the urine of a white cow and the dung of a black cow.
कपिलाया घृतं ग्राह्यं महापातकनाशनम्
From a tawny cow, ghee should be taken, which destroys great sins.
आहृत्य प्रणवेनैव उत्थाप्य प्रणवेन च
Having brought them, with the syllable 'Om', and having lifted them, also with 'Om',
पालाशे मध्यमे पर्णे भाण्डे ताम्रमये शुभे
On the middle leaf of the palāśa tree, in a vessel made of auspicious copper—
सूतके तु समुत्पन्ने द्वितीये समुपस्थिते
When impurity arises at birth, and when a second such occasion occurs—
जातेन शुध्यते जातं मृतेन मृतकं तथा
By the one who is born, the impurity of birth is purified; by the one who dies, the impurity of death likewise.
गर्भसंस्त्रवणे मासे त्रीण्यहानि विनिर्दिशेत्
For the discharge of the fetus, three days are prescribed in the month.
रजस्युपरते साध्वी स्ननेन स्त्री रजस्वला
When her menses have ceased, the virtuous woman, though menstruating, is purified by bathing.
स्वामिगोत्रेण कर्त्तव्यास्तस्याः पिण्डोदकक्रियाः
The offering of rice-balls and water for her must be performed according to her husband's lineage.
षण्णां देयास्त्रयः पिण्डा एवं दाता न मुह्यति
Three rice-balls are to be given for six persons; thus, the giver does not become confused.
पितामह्यपि स्वेनैव स्वेनैव प्रपितामही
For the paternal grandmother and the paternal great-grandmother, the offerings are to be made by their own descendants.
अदैवं भोजयेच्छ्राद्धं पिण्डमेकं तु निर्वपेत्
One should offer a śrāddha without invoking deities, and place a single rice-ball.
पार्वणं चेति विज्ञेयं श्राद्धं पञ्चविधं बुधैः
And the śrāddha called pārvaṇa—thus, the wise know five kinds of śrāddha.
निर्वपेर्त्रीन्नरः पिण्डानेकमेव मृते ऽहनि
A man should offer three rice-balls, but only one on the day of death.
पाणिग्रहणमन्त्राभ्यां स्वगोत्राद्भ्रश्यते ततः
By the marriage mantras and the taking of the hand, she is separated from her own lineage.
तत्समं सूतकं याति तथापिण्डोदके ऽपि च
She attains the same impurity, and likewise in the offering of rice-balls and water.
एकत्वं सा व्रजेद्भर्तुः पिण्डे गोत्रे च सूतके
She becomes one with her husband in the rice-ball, the lineage, and in impurity.
अस्थिसंचयनं कार्यं बन्धुभिर्हितबुद्धिभिः
The gathering of bones should be performed by relatives who possess good judgment.
अस्थिसंचयनं प्रोक्तं वर्णानामनुपूर्वशः
The gathering of bones is prescribed according to the order of the castes.
मुच्यते प्रेतलोकात्स स्वर्गलोके महीयते
He is released from the world of the departed and is honored in the world of the gods.
आगच्छन्तु मे पितरो गृह्णन्त्वेताआजाञ्जलीन्
May my ancestors come; may they accept these handfuls of offerings.
गोशृङ्गमात्रमुद्धृत्य जलमध्ये विनिः क्षिपेत्
Taking an amount of water equal to a cow’s horn, one should cast it into the midst of water.
पितॄणां स्थानमाकाशं दक्षिणादिक् तथैव च
The abode of the ancestors is in the sky, and likewise in the southern direction.
तस्मादस्य जलं देयं पितॄणां हितमिच्छता
Therefore, one who desires the welfare of the ancestors should offer them water.
मध्ययोरप्युभाभ्यां च पवित्रं सर्वदा जलम्
Between both, water is always pure for purification.
भाण्डस्थं धरणीस्थं वा पवित्रं सर्वदा जलम्
Water kept in a vessel or placed on the earth is always pure for purification.
असंस्कृतप्रमीतानां स्थले दद्याद्विचक्षणः
A wise person should offer water on the ground for those who died without rites.
उभाभ्यां तर्पणे दद्यादेष धर्मो व्यवस्थितः
For both, one should give offerings during the ritual; this is the established law.
शृणुष्व धैर्यमास्थाय रौद्रा ये नरका यतः
Listen, with courage, to the fierce hells from which they arise.
