हरिपादांबुजद्वन्द्वमभीष्टप्तदमस्तु नः
May the twin lotus feet of Hari grant us the fulfillment of our wishes.
कोवह्निर्दहते तस्य तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति
Which fire burns for him? You, who know, ought to speak of that.
विद्यते तव विप्रेन्द्र त्रिविधस्य सुनिश्चितम्
O best of Brāhmaṇas, you certainly know the threefold (fire).
भाव्यं वाप्यथवातीतं वर्तमान वदस्व नः
Whether it is future, past, or present, tell us.
श्रूयतां नृपशार्दूल वह्निना येन तद्भवेत्
Let it be heard, O tiger among kings, by which fire that comes to be.
भस्म शुष्कं तथार्द्रं च पापमस्य ह्येशेषतः
Ash, dry and also wet, completely destroys his sin.
उपवासपरो भूत्वा पूजयेन्मधुसूदनम्
Observing a fast, one should worship Madhusudana.
विशोधयति पापानि कितवो हि यथा धनम्
He cleanses away sins just as a gambler loses his wealth.
भस्मतां याति राजेन्द्र अपि जन्मशतोद्भवम्
Even sins accumulated over hundreds of births are reduced to ashes, O King.
यादृशं पद्मनाभस्य दिनं पातकहानिदम्
Such is the day of Padmanabha, which destroys sins.
यावन्नोपवसेज्जन्तुः पद्मनाभदिमं शुभम्
Until a person fasts on this auspicious day of Padmanabha, O King, his sins remain.
एकादश्युपवासस्य कलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम्
Even sixteen other observances do not equal a fraction of the Ekadashi fast.
एकादश्युपवासेन तत्सर्वं विलयं व्रजेत्
By fasting on Ekadashi, all those sins are dissolved.
व्याजेनापि कृता राजन्न दर्शयति भास्करिम्
Even if performed with pretense, O King, it does not yield a solar result.
सुकलत्रप्रदा ह्येषा शरीरारोग्यदायिनी
Indeed, this bestows good offspring and grants bodily health.
न चापि कैरवं क्षेत्रं न रेवा न च देविका
Neither the Kairava field, nor the Reva, nor the Devika can compare.
अनायासेन राजेन्द्र प्राप्यते हरिमन्दिरम्
Without difficulty, O King, one attains the abode of Hari.
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोके व्रजेन्नरः
Freed from all sins, a man attains the world of Vishnu.
भार्याया दश पक्षे च पुरुषानुद्धरेत्तथा
In the ten fortnights of the wife, a man should likewise uplift others.
चिन्तामणिसमा ह्येषा अथवापि निधेः समा
Indeed, this is equal to a wish-fulfilling gem or even a great treasure.
द्वादशीं ये प्रपन्ना हि नरा नरवरोत्तम
Those men who observe the Dvadashi, O best of men,
स्रग्विणः पीतवस्त्राश्च प्रयान्ति हरिमन्दिरम्
Adorned with garlands and wearing yellow garments, they proceed to the abode of Hari.
पापेन्धनस्य घोरस्य पावकाख्यो महीपते
For the one weighed down by terrible sin, O King, there is a fire called Pavaka.
इच्छद्भिर्विपुलान्योगान्पुत्रपौत्रादिकांस्तथा
Those who desire, through great efforts, sons, grandsons, and the like—
बहुवृजिनसमेतो ऽकामतः कामतो वा व्रजति पदमनन्तं लोकनाथस्य विष्णोः
Whether surrounded by many sins, or free from desire or full of desire, one attains the endless abode of Viṣṇu, the Lord of the worlds.
पप्रच्छुर्मुनयः सूतं व्यासशिष्यं महामतिम्
The sages questioned Sūta, the wise disciple of Vyāsa.
माहात्म्यं कथयामास उपवासविधिं तथा
He began to relate the greatness and also the procedure for fasting.
माहात्म्यं चक्रिणश्चापि सर्वपापौघ शान्तिदम्
He also spoke of the greatness of the wielder of the discus, which brings peace from all heaps of sin.
अष्टादश पुराणानि भवान् जानाति मानद
O bestower of honor, you know the eighteen Purāṇas.
तन्नास्ति यन्न वेत्सि त्वं पुराणेषु स्मृतिष्वपि
There is nothing in the Purāṇas or even in the Smṛtis that you do not know.
