दृष्ट्वा प्रदीपान्नहि ते ऽपि जन्मिनः पुनश्च मुक्तिं हि लभन्त एव च
Even those who merely see the lamps, O you who are born again, attain liberation again.
अत्र चन्द्रोदये विप्र संपूज्याः कृत्तिकाश्च षट्
At the rising of the moon, O priest, the six Krittikas should be worshipped.
गन्धपुष्पैस्तथा धूपदीपैर्नैवेद्येविस्तरैः
With fragrances, flowers, incense, lamps, and a variety of offerings,
एवं देवान्समभ्यर्च्य दीपो देयो गृहाद्बहिः
Thus, after worshipping the gods, a lamp should be placed outside the house.
चतुर्द्दंशाङ्गुलः कार्यः सेच्यश्चदनवारिणा
It should be made four finger-widths tall and sprinkled with water from the roof.
मुक्तानेत्रसमायुक्तं मत्स्यं सर्वाङ्गशोभनम्
A fish adorned with pearl-like eyes, beautiful in all its limbs.
गन्धाद्यैस्तत्र संपूज्य द्विजाय प्रतिपादयेत्
There, after honoring with fragrances and the like, one should offer it to the twice-born.
दानस्यास्य प्रभावेण मोदते हरिसन्निधौ
By the power of this gift, one rejoices in the presence of Hari.
रुद्रलोकमवाप्नोति नात्र कार्या विचारणा
One attains the world of Rudra; there is no need for further deliberation.
देवं विप्राय शान्ताय सर्वकामसमृद्धये
One should worship the deity for the peaceful Brahmin, for the fulfillment of all desires.
पुरन्दरश्च सोमश्च तथा तिष्यो बृहस्पतिः
Purandara, Soma, Tishya, and Brihaspati likewise,
अलङ्कृतं पुनश्चकुः सौभाग्योत्सवकेलिभिः
They adorned it again with festivities of good fortune and playful celebrations.
गौरसर्षपकल्केन समालभ्य स्वकां तनुम्
Having anointed one's own body with a paste of cow's ghee and mustard,
दृष्ट्वा च मङ्गलं द्रव्यं स्पृष्ट्वा नत्वा ततोर्ऽचयेत्
After seeing the auspicious substance, touching it, and bowing, one should then worship.
विधाय होमं विप्रांश्च तर्पयेत्पायसाशनैः
After performing the fire offering, one should satisfy the Brahmins with offerings of rice pudding.
अलक्ष्मीनाशनं चैव मोदतेह परत्र च
It destroys misfortune, and one rejoices both here and in the next world.
रत्नानि कञ्चुकोष्णीषपादत्राणानि वा धनम्
Jewels, cloaks, turbans, footwear, or wealth,
यस्त्वत्र शङ्करं देवं पूजयेद्विधिपूर्वकम्
Whoever worships the god Shankara here according to the prescribed method,
फआल्गुने पूर्णिमायां तु होलिकापूजनं मतम्
On the full moon of Phalguna, the worship of Holika is prescribed.
तत्राग्निं विधिवद्ध्रुत्वा रक्षोघ्नैर्मन्त्रविस्तरैः
There, having properly kindled the fire, with extensive mantras for warding off demons,
अतस्त्वां पूजयिष्यामि भूते भूतिप्रदा भव"
"Therefore, I shall worship you; grant prosperity among beings, O giver of prosperity."
परिक्रम्योत्सवः कार्य्यो गीतवादित्रनिःस्वनैः
The festival should be conducted with circumambulation, accompanied by songs and the sounds of instruments.
ततस्तां प्रदहॄन्त्येवं काष्ठाद्यैर्गीतमङ्गलैः
Then they burn her with wood and the like, accompanied by auspicious songs.
इति जानीहि विप्रेन्द्र लोके स्थितिरनेकधा
Thus, know this, O chief of Brahmins: the state of the world is manifold.
पृथक्छृणुष्व मे विप्र पितॄणामतिवल्लभम्
Hear separately from me, O learned one, that which is exceedingly dear to the ancestors.
पार्वणेन विधानेन श्राद्धं वित्तानुसारतः
The śrāddha should be performed according to the prescribed rites on the full moon, in accordance with one's means.
सर्वमासेष्वमायां वै बहुपुण्यप्रदं यतः
In every month, this practice indeed bestows abundant merit.
विधानं ज्येष्ठपूर्णावदिहापि परिकीर्तितम्

पितृश्राद्धं दानहोमसुरार्चानन्त्यश्नुते
By offering śrāddha to the ancestors, giving gifts, performing oblations, and worshipping the gods, one attains endless results.
विरिञ्चिमनुनामन्त्र्य हुंफट् छिन्नान्कुशान् द्विज
Reciting the names of Brahmā and Manu, uttering 'huṃ' and 'phaṭ', and breaking obstacles, O twice-born, are prescribed.
