पाशं छित्वा तथा तस्य कृच्छ्रमेकं चरेद्दिजः
Having cut the rope, the twice-born should perform one Kṛcchra penance.
कृच्छ्रार्ध्दमाचरेज्ज्ञानादज्ञानादैन्दवद्वयम्
He should perform half a Kṛcchra penance if done knowingly; if unknowingly, two Indra penances.
अगम्यागमने विप्रो मद्यगो मांसभक्षणे
A Brāhmaṇa who approaches a forbidden woman, drinks liquor, or eats meat,
महापातककर्त्तारश्चत्वारो ऽथ विशेषतः
There are four especially who commit great sins.
रहस्यकरणो ऽप्येवं मासमभ्यस्य पुरुषः
Even if done secretly, a man should practice penance for a month.
रजकश्चर्मकारश्च नटो बुरुड एव च
The washerman, the leather-worker, the dancer, and the drum-maker,
भुक्त्वा चैषां स्त्रियो गत्वा पीत्वा यःप्रतिगृह्यते
Whoever, after eating with them, goes to their women or drinks and accepts from them,
मातरं गुरुपत्नीं च दुहितृभगिनीस्नुषाः
Mother, teacher's wife, daughter, sister, and daughter-in-law—
राज्ञीं प्रव्रजितां धात्रीं तथावर्णोत्तमामपि
A queen, a woman who has renounced the world, a nurse, or even a woman of the highest class—
अमूषु पितृगोत्रासु मातृगोत्रगतासु च
among these, whether belonging to the father's lineage or to the mother's lineage,
वेश्याभिगमने पापं व्यपोहन्ति द्विजा स्तथा
twice-born men remove sin by approaching prostitutes in such cases.
गुरुतल्पगतो कुर्यार्द्बाह्मणो विधिवद्रूतम्
If a Brahmin has gone to his teacher's wife, he should perform the prescribed expiation.
दण्डादूर्ध्वं प्रहारेण यस्तु गां विनिपातयेत्
If someone strikes a cow above the staff and causes it to fall,
अङ्गुष्ठमात्रस्थूलस्तु बाहुमात्रघप्रमाणकः
if the wound is the size of a thumb, or as large as the forearm,
गवां निपातने चैव गर्भो ऽपि संभवेद्यदि
and if, by causing a cow to fall, even a fetus is produced,
बन्धने रोधने चैव पोषणे वा गवां रुजाम्
in the case of binding, confining, or injuring cows, or causing them pain,
मूर्च्छितः पतितो वापि दण्डेनाभिहतस्ततः
if a cow faints, falls, or is struck with a staff,
ग्रासं वा यदि गृह्णीयात्तोयं वापि पिबेद्यदि
if it takes food or drinks water in such a state,
कष्टलोष्टाश्मभिर्गावः शस्त्रैर्वा निहता यदि
if cows are killed with wood, clods, stones, or weapons,
काष्टे सान्तपनं प्रोक्तं प्राजापत्यं तु लोष्टके
for striking with wood, the penance called Sāntapana is prescribed; for clods, the Prājāpatya penance.
औषधं स्नेहमाहारं दद्याद्गोब्राह्मणेषु च
One should give medicine, oil, or food to cows and Brahmins.
तैलभेषजपाने च भेषजानां च भक्षणे
In the case of drinking oil as medicine, or eating medicinal substances,
वत्सानां कण्ठबन्धेन क्रिययाभेषजेन तु
by tying the calves at the neck, or by performing a medicinal procedure,
पादे चैवास्य रोमाणि द्विपादे श्मश्रु केवलम्
on the foot, the hair is to be removed; on the two legs, only the beard.
सर्वान्केशान्समुद्धृत्य छेदयेदङ्गुलद्वयम्
Having removed all the hair from the body, one should cut off two fingers' breadth.
न स्तिया वपनं कार्यं न च वीरासनं स्मृतम्
A woman should not be shaved, nor is the heroic posture prescribed for her.
राजा वा राजपुत्रघो वा ब्राह्मणो वा बहुश्रुतः
Whether it is a king, a prince, or a learned Brahmin,
केशानां रक्षघणार्थं च द्विगुणं व्रतमादिशेत्
For the purpose of purifying the hair, a double penance should be prescribed.
द्विगुणे गतु व्रते चीर्णे द्विगुणा व्रतदक्षिणा
When the double penance has been performed, the offering for the penance must also be doubled.
अश्रौतस्मार्तविहितं प्रायश्चित्तं वदन्ति ये
Those who prescribe penance not sanctioned by Śruti or Smṛti,
