चन्दनाद्यैस्तथा पुष्पमालाभिः प्रार्च्य ताम्रके
Worship it with sandalwood and flower garlands, and offer at the copper vessel.
प्रदद्यात्पादमूले ऽस्या मन्त्रेणानेन नारद
Place it at her feet, O Nārada, with this mantra.
सर्वदेवमये देवि सर्वदेवैरलङ्कृते
O goddess, filled with all the gods, adorned by all the gods.
ततो माषादिसंसिद्धान्वटकांश्च निवेदयेत्
Then offer balls of food prepared from black gram and similar ingredients.
सुरभि त्वं जगन्माता नित्यं विष्णुपदे स्थिता
O Surabhi, you are the mother of the world, always established at Viṣṇu's feet.
सर्वदेवमये देवि सर्वदेवैरलङ्कृते
O goddess, filled with all the gods, adorned by all the gods.
तद्दिने तैलपक्वं च स्थालीपक्वं द्विजोत्तम
On that day, O best of Brāhmaṇas, offer food cooked in oil and in a pot.
द्वादश्यामूर्जशुक्लायां देवं दामोदरं द्विज
On the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Ūrja, worship the god Dāmodara, O Brāhmaṇa.
तदग्रे भोजयेद्विप्रान्पक्वान्नेनार्कसंख्यकान्
In front of him, feed Brāhmaṇas with cooked rice equal to the number of suns.
सपूगमोदकस्वर्णांस्तेभ्यः प्रीत्या समर्पयेत्
With devotion, offer them pūga, modaka, and gold.
देहान्ते विष्णुसायुज्यं लभते नात्र संशयः
At the end of the body, one attains union with Viṣṇu—of this there is no doubt.
सुप्तोत्थितं जगन्नाथमलङ्कृत्य निशागमे
Having adorned the Lord of the universe, who has arisen from sleep, at the coming of night,
हुत्वा तत्र समुद्दीप्ते रौप्य दीपिकया मुने
Having offered oblations there, O sage, with a silver lamp that is brightly kindled,
तत्रैवानुगतां लक्ष्मीं ब्रह्माणीं चण्डिकां तथा
There, likewise, Lakṣmī, Brahmāṇī, Caṇḍikā,
मातॄः पितॄन्नगान्नागान्सर्वान्नीराजयेत्क्रमात्
The Mothers, the Fathers, the Nāgas, and all others should be ritually honored in order.
नमो जयेति शब्दैश्च घण्टाशङ्खा दिनिःस्वनैः
With words such as 'Salutations! Victory!' and the resounding of bells and conches,
गवां कोलाहले वृत्ते नीराजनमहोत्सवे
When the bellowing of cows arises during the great festival of nīrājana,
राजचिह्नानि सर्वाणि च्छत्रादीनि च नारद
All the royal insignia, O Nārada, including the umbrella and others,
पूजयित्वा यथान्यायं नीरज्य स्वयमादरात्
Having worshipped them according to rule, and having performed nīrājana oneself with reverence,
सिंहासने नवे कॢप्ते तिष्ठेत्सम्यगलङ्कृतः
One should sit, fully adorned, upon a newly prepared throne.
शीर्षोपरि नरेद्रस्य तया नीराजयेच्छनैः
With that, one should gently perform nīrājana above the king’s head.
राज्ञा वित्तवतान्येन वर्षमारोग्यमिच्छता
By another wealthy king who desires a year of health,
नीराजनाभिधा विप्र तद्रोगा यान्ति संक्षयम्
O brāhmaṇa, by this rite called nīrājana, those diseases are destroyed.
मनोभवस्तथा प्राणो नरो यातश्च वीर्यवान्
Likewise, desire, life, and a man’s vigor depart,
विभुश्चापि प्रभुश्चैव साध्या द्वादश कीर्तिताः
And also the mighty and the lordly—these twelve are spoken of.
ततो द्विजाग्र्यान्संभोज्य द्वादशात्र सुदक्षिणाः
Then, having fed the foremost twice-born, twelve here with generous gifts,
एतस्यामेव विदितं द्वादशादित्यसंज्ञितम्
In this very rite is known what is called the Twelve Ādityas.
धातामित्रोर्ऽयमा पूषा शक्रोंऽशो वरुणो भगः
Dhātā, Mitra, Aryaman, Pūṣā, Śakra, Aṃśa, Varuṇa, Bhaga—
प्रतिमासं तु शुक्लायां द्वादश्यामर्च्य यत्नतः
Each month, on the bright twelfth day, one should worship with care.
हैमीः संपूज्य विधिना भोजयित्वा द्विजोत्तमान्
Having duly honored with golden images and fed the best of twice-born.
