उपाष्य द्वादश्यांप्रातर्गोविन्दं पूजयेत्तथा
Having fasted, on the twelfth day in the morning, he should likewise worship Govinda.
दत्वा तेभ्यो विसृज्याथ स्वयं भुञ्जीत बान्धवैः
After giving to them and dismissing them, he should then eat together with his relatives.
स याति वैष्णवं लोकं विमानेन तु भास्वता
He goes to the world of Vishnu in a shining celestial vehicle.
मोक्षदं कीर्तितं विप्र नास्त्यस्मिन्संशयः क्वचित्
This is declared to grant liberation, O Brahmin; there is no doubt about this at all.
सर्वव्रतोत्तमं विप्र ततो ज्ञेयं महाफलम्
O Brahmin, this should be known as the highest of all vows and as yielding great fruit.
आद्यन्तयोरेकमेकं मध्यमे द्वयमेव हि
At the beginning and end, one item each; in the middle, indeed, two.
कांस्यं मांसं मसूरान्नं चणकान्कोद्रवांस्तथा
Bronze, meat, lentils, chickpeas, and also wild barley.
दशम्यां दश वस्तूनि वर्जयेद्वैष्णवऋ सदा
On the tenth day, a Vaishnava should always avoid ten things.
परापवादं पैशुन्यं स्तेयं हिंसां तथा रतिम्
Slander of others, tale-bearing, theft, violence, and sexual indulgence.
कांस्यं मांसं सुरां क्षौद्रं तैलं विण्म्लेच्छभाषणम्
Bronze, meat, liquor, honey, oil, and speech with outcastes and foreigners.
अस्पृश्यस्पर्शमाशूरे द्वादश्यां द्वादश त्यजेत्
Contact with the untouchable should be avoided; on the twelfth day, twelve things are to be renounced.
शक्तो ऽशक्तुस्तु मतिमानेकभुक्तं न नक्तकम्
He who is able, not unable, and wise, should eat once, not at night.
अयाचितं वापि चरेन्न त्यजेद्व्रतमीदृशम्
Even if he must wander for alms, he should not abandon such a vow.
यानि कृत्वा नरो लोके विष्णोः प्रियतरो भवेत्
Those acts by which a man becomes most dear to Vishnu in this world.
स्थापयेदव्रणं कुंभं सिततन्दुलपूरितम्
He should place an unbroken pot filled with white rice grains.
सितवस्त्रयुगच्छन्नं सितचन्दनचर्च्चितम्
He should cover it with a pair of white cloths and anoint it with white sandalwood paste.
ताम्रपात्रं गुडोपेतं तस्योपरि निवेशयेत्
He should set a copper vessel containing jaggery on top of it.
गन्धाद्यैरुपचारैस्तु सोपवासो परे ऽहनि
With offerings such as fragrances and others, while observing a fast, on the following day—
ब्रह्मणान्भोजयेच्चैव तेभ्यो दद्याच्च दक्षिणाम्
He should feed Brahmins and give them gifts as honoraria.
शय्यां तु दद्याद्गुरवे सर्वोपस्करसंयुताम्
He should give to the teacher a bed furnished with all its accessories.
वासोभिर्द्विजदांपत्यं पूजयित्वा समर्पयेत्
After honoring the Brahmin couple with garments, he should present them.
यः कुर्याद्विधिनानेन मदनद्वादशीव्रतम्
Whoever performs the Madanadvadashi vow in this manner—
अस्यामेव समुद्दिष्टं भर्तृद्वादशिकाव्रतम्
Here itself is described the Bhartṛdvādaśikā vow.
संस्थाप्य मण्डपं पुष्पैस्तदुपर्प्युपकल्पयेत्
He should set up a pavilion and adorn it with flowers.
नृत्यवादित्रगीताद्यैस्ततः प्रातः परे ऽहनि
Then, on the next morning, with dance, instrumental music, and songs—
द्विजान्संभोज्य विसृजद्दक्षिणाभिः प्रतोषितान्
He should feed the Brahmins, and after satisfying them with gifts, let them go.
सप्तजन्मसु भुङ्क्ते च भोगान् लोकद्वयेप्सितान्
He enjoys the desired pleasures of both worlds for seven lifetimes.
संपूज्य माधवं भक्त्या गन्धाद्यैरुपचारकैः
Having worshipped Mādhava with devotion, with offerings such as fragrances and others—
विप्राय दद्याद्विधिवन्माधवः प्रीयतामिति
He should give to a Brahmin, according to rule: 'May Mādhava be pleased.'
गन्धाद्यैर्मधुरान्नाढ्यं करक विनिवेदयेत्
He should offer to the deity, with fragrances and other items, a vessel filled with sweet foods.
