सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकमवान्पुयात्
Freed from all sins, he attains the world of Viṣṇu.
सर्वधर्मफलं पूर्णं संतुष्टः प्रददाति च
He receives the full fruit of all dharmas, and is satisfied.
सफलानि भवन्त्येव सर्वकर्माणि भूपते
O King, all actions indeed become fruitful.
तमुद्दिश्य कृतं यच्च तदानन्त्याय कल्पते
And whatever is done with reference to Him leads to endless merit.
कार्यं च विष्णुः करणानि विष्णुरस्मान्न किञ्चिव्द्यतिरिक्तमस्ति
The work is Viṣṇu, the instruments are Viṣṇu; for us, there is nothing apart from Viṣṇu.
प्रब्रवीमि नृपश्रेष्ठ तं शृणुष्व समाहितः
I shall declare it, O best of kings; listen attentively.
क्रोधादज्ञानतो वापिं तस्य वक्ष्यामि निष्कृतिम्
I will explain the expiation for him, whether it is due to anger or ignorance.
स्नानं त्रिषवणं विप्रपञ्चगव्येन शुध्यति
Bathing three times a day, and using the five products of the cow, a Brāhmaṇa becomes purified.
उच्छिष्टत्वे ऽशुचित्वे च तस्य शुद्धिं वदामि ते
I will tell you the purification for him in the case of having leftovers or impurity.
अहोरात्रोषितो भूत्वा पञ्चगव्येन शुध्यति
After fasting for a day and night, he is purified by the five products of the cow.
अहोरात्रोषितो भूत्वा जुहुयात्सर्पिषानलम्
After fasting for a day and night, he should offer ghee into the fire.
भूमौ निधाय तं ग्रासं स्त्रात्वा शुद्धिमवान्पुयात्
Placing that morsel on the ground and protecting it, one attains purification.
अशित्वा चैव तत्सर्वं त्रिरात्रमशुचिर्भवेत्
And if he eats all of it, he remains impure for three nights.
स्वस्थस्त्रीणि सहस्राणि गायत्र्याः शोधनं परम्
Reciting the Gāyatrī three thousand times is the highest purification.
चाण्डालैः श्वपर्चैः स्पृष्टो विण्मूत्रे च कृते द्विजः
If a twice-born is touched by Chāṇḍālas, dog-cooks, or by urine and feces,
उदक्यां सूतिकांवापि संस्पृशेदन्त्यजो यदि
If an outcaste touches a woman in her menses, or a woman after childbirth, or a woman drawing water,
रजस्वला तु संस्पृष्टा श्वभिर्मातङ्गवायसैः
Or if a menstruating woman is touched by dogs, elephants, or crows,
रजस्वले यदा नार्यावन्योन्यं स्पृशतः क्वचित्
Whenever two women in their menses touch each other,
उच्छिष्टेन च संस्पृष्टो यो न स्नानं समाचरेत्
Whoever is touched by leftovers and does not bathe,
अनॄतौ तु स्त्रियं गत्वा शौचं मूत्रपुरूषवत्
If one approaches a woman at the wrong time, purification is as for contact with urine or feces.
शयनादुत्थिता नारी शुचिः स्यादशुचिः पुमान्
A woman who rises from sleep is pure; a man, however, is impure.
दण्ड्या द्वादशकं नारी वर्षं त्याज्या धनं विना
A woman is to be punished with twelve strokes; if she departs for a year, she is to be expelled, even without her wealth.
पिता हि पतितः कामं न तु माता कदाचन
The father may be declared fallen at will, but the mother is never so, under any circumstance.
मृते मेध्येन लेत्पव्यो जीवतो द्विशतं दमः
If dead, he should be smeared with purified substances; if alive, a fine of two hundred is imposed.
प्रायश्चित्तं ततः कुर्युर्यथाशास्त्रप्रचोदितम्
Thereafter, they should perform expiation as prescribed by the scriptures.
विषप्रपतनध्वस्ताः शस्त्रघातहताश्च ये
Those who are destroyed by poison or struck down by weapons,
चान्द्रायणेन शुद्ध्यंन्ति तत्पकृच्छ्रद्वयेन वा
Are purified by the Cāndrāyaṇa penance or by two Prakṛcchra penances.
चान्द्रायणाभ्यां शुद्ध्येत दत्त्वा धेनुं तथा वृषम्
One is purified by two Cāndrāyaṇa penances, or by giving a cow and a bull.
स्पृष्टः स्त्रात्वा शुचिः सद्यो दिवा संध्यासु रात्रिषु
Having touched a woman, one becomes pure immediately—by day, at twilight, or at night.
गोमूत्रयावकाहारो मासार्द्धेन विशुद्ध्यति
By eating barley with cow's urine, one is purified in half a month.
