कृष्णाष्टम्यां ज्येष्ठमासे पूजयित्वा त्रिलोचनम्
On the dark eighth day in the month of Jyeṣṭha, having worshipped the three-eyed one,
ज्येष्ठशुक्ले तथाष्टम्यां यो देवीं पूजयेन्नरः
Likewise, on the bright eighth day of Jyeṣṭha, the man who worships the goddess—
शुक्लाष्टम्यां तथाऽषाढे स्नात्वा चैव निशांबुना
On the bright eighth day in Āṣāḍha, after bathing with water collected at night,
ततः शुद्धजलैः स्नाप्य विलिंपेत्सेंदुचन्दनैः
Then, bathing with pure waters, one should anoint with sandalwood mixed with camphor.
भोजयित्वा ततो विप्रान्दत्वा स्वर्णं च दक्षिणाम्
After feeding the Brāhmaṇas, one should then give them gold as a gift.
एतद्व्रतं नरः कृत्वा देवीलोकमवाप्नुयात्
A man who performs this vow attains the world of the goddess.
क्षीरेण स्नापयित्वा च मिष्टान्नं विनिवेदयेत्
Having bathed with milk, one should offer sweet food.
भुक्त्वा समापयेदद्व्रतं संततिवर्धनम्
After eating, he should complete this vow, which increases progeny.
उपवासं तु संकल्प्य स्नात्वा कृत्वा च नैत्यिकम्
Having resolved to fast, bathed, and performed the daily rites,
कृष्णं विष्णुं तथानन्तं गोविन्दं गरुडध्वजम्
He should worship Kṛṣṇa, Viṣṇu, Ananta, Govinda, and the one with Garuḍa as his banner.
एतैश्च नामभिर्नित्यं कृष्णदेवं समर्चयेत्
With these names, he should always worship Lord Kṛṣṇa.
एवं दशदिनं कुर्याद्व्रतानामुत्तमं व्रतम्
In this way, for ten days, one should perform this supreme vow among vows.
कृष्णमन्त्रेण जुहुयाच्चरुणाष्टोत्तरं शतम्
With the Kṛṣṇa mantra, one should offer oblations with cooked food one hundred and eight times.
सौवर्णे ताम्रपात्रे वा मृन्मये वेणुपात्रके
In a golden, copper, earthen, or bamboo vessel.
हैमीं च प्रतिमां कृत्वा पूजयित्वा विधानतः
Having fashioned a golden image, and having worshipped it according to the prescribed method,
दातव्या गौः सवत्सा च वस्त्रालङ्कारभूषिता
A cow with her calf, adorned with garments and ornaments, should be given.
ताश्च दद्याद्विधिज्ञाय स्वयं वा भक्षयेद्व्रती
One who knows the proper procedure should give these, or the votary may consume them himself.
दशमे ऽह्नि ततो मूर्तिं सद्रव्यां गुरवेर्ऽपयेत्
On the tenth day, he should offer the image, along with the materials, to the teacher.
दद्यादेव दशाब्दं तु कृत्वा व्रतमनुत्तमम्
Having performed this excellent vow for ten years, he should indeed give it.
अन्ते कृष्णस्य सायुज्यं लभते नात्र संशयः
In the end, he attains union with Krishna—of this there is no doubt.
केवलेनोपवासेन तस्मिञ्जन्मदिने हरेः
Even by fasting alone on that birthday of Hari,
उपवासी तिलैः स्नातो नद्यादौ विमले जले
The one who fasts, having bathed with sesame in pure water of a river or lake,
तन्मध्ये कलशं स्थाप्य ताम्रजं वापि मृन्मयम्
In the midst of that, he should place a water-pot, either of copper or of clay.
हैमीं वस्त्रयुगाच्छन्नां कृष्णस्य प्रतिमां शुभम्
He should cover the auspicious golden image of Krishna with a pair of cloths.
देवकीं वसुदेवं च यशोदां नन्दमेव च
Devakī, Vasudeva, Yaśodā, and also Nanda—
तत आरार्तिकं कृत्वा क्षमाप्यानम्य भक्तितः
Then, having performed the ārati, he should bow with devotion and ask forgiveness.
पञ्चामृतैः शुद्धजलैर्गन्धाद्यैः पूजयेत्पुनः
He should again worship with pañcāmṛta, pure waters, fragrances, and the like.
साज्यं रौप्ये धृतं पात्रे नैवेद्यं विनिवेदयेत्
He should offer the food, prepared with ghee, in a silver vessel as naivedya.
विचिन्तयन्मृगाङ्काय दद्यादर्घ्यं समुद्यते
Meditating on the rising moon, he should offer arghya when it appears.
पौराणिकैः स्तोत्रपाठैर्गीतवाद्यैरनेकधा
With recitations of ancient hymns, with songs and various musical instruments,
