यदि चेत्सा समुद्दिष्टा चंपाह्वा मुनिसत्तम
If that prescribed worship is performed, O best of sages, called Campā,
पूजनीयो वेदनीयः स्मर्तव्यः सौख्यमिच्छता
He should be worshipped, known, and remembered by one who desires happiness.
पौषमासे शुक्लषष्ठ्यां देवो दिनपतिर्द्विज
In the month of Pauṣa, on the sixth day of the bright fortnight, O twice-born,
विष्णुरूपी जगत्त्राता प्रदुर्भूताः सनातनः
The eternal Lord, protector of the world, appearing in the form of Viṣṇu,
नैवेद्यैर्वस्त्त्रभूषाद्यैः सर्वसौख्यमभीप्सुभिः
By those who desire all happiness, with food offerings, garments, ornaments, and the like,
तस्यां वरुणमभ्यर्च्येद्विष्णुरूपं सनातनम्
On that day, one should worship Varuṇa, the eternal form of Viṣṇu.
एवमभ्यर्च्य विधिवद्यद्यच्चाभिलषेन्नरः
Having thus worshipped according to the proper method, whatever a man desires,
फआल्गुने शुक्लषष्ठ्यां तु देवं पशुपतिं द्विज
In the month of Phālguna, on the sixth day of the bright fortnight, O twice-born, the god Paśupati,
संस्नाप्य शतरुद्रेण पृथक्पञ्चामृतैर्जलैः
Having bathed him with the Śatarudriya hymn, separately with the five nectars and with water,
बिल्वपत्रैश्च धत्तूरकुसुमैश्च फलैस्तथा
With bilva leaves, dhattūra flowers, and also with fruits,
क्षमाप्य प्रणिपत्यैनं कैलासाय विसर्जयेत्
Having sought forgiveness, bowing to him, one should bid him return to Kailāsa.
इह भुक्त्वा वरान्भोगानन्ते शिवगतिं लभेत्
Having enjoyed excellent pleasures here, one attains the state of Śiva in the end.
यानि कृत्वा नरो भक्त्या सूर्यसायुज्यमाप्नुयात्
By performing these acts with devotion, a man attains union with the Sun.
स्थण्डिले गोमयालिप्ते गौरमृत्तिकयास्तृते
On a platform smeared with cow dung and covered with white clay,
विन्यसेत्पूर्वपत्रे तु देवौ द्वौ कृतधातुकौ
On the eastern leaf, two deities made of metal should be placed.
दक्षिणे च न्यसेत्पत्रे तथैव राक्षसद्वयम्
Likewise, on the southern leaf, two Rākṣasas should be placed.
काद्रवेयौ महानागौ पश्चिमे कृतचारकौ
On the western side, the two great serpents born of Kadru, who are accomplished spies, should be placed.
ऐशान्ये विन्यसेत्पत्पे ग्रहमेको द्विजोत्तम
On the northeastern leaf, O best of twice-born, a single planet should be placed.
दीपैर्धूपैः सनैवेद्यैस्तांबूलक्रमुकादिभिः
With lamps, incense, offerings of food, betel, and areca nut, and the like,
सूर्यस्याष्टाष्ट चान्येषां प्रदद्यादाहुतीः क्रमात्
One should offer eight oblations to the Sun and likewise eight to the others, in order.
दक्षिणा च ततो देया द्विजेभ्यः शक्तितो द्विज
Then, according to one’s ability, a gift should be given to the Brāhmaṇas, O twice-born.
देहान्ते मण्डलं भानोर्भत्त्वा गच्छेत्परं पदम्
At the end of the body, having worshipped the circle of the Sun, one attains the supreme state.
क्रोधात्पीता पुनस्त्यक्ता कर्णरन्ध्रात्तु दक्षिणात्
If, out of anger, the yellow one is again abandoned, he departs through the right ear.
गन्धपुष्पाक्षताद्यैश्च सर्वैरेवोपचारकैः
With all kinds of offerings such as fragrance, flowers, and unbroken rice,
भक्त्या कृतं सप्तकुलं नयेत्स्वर्गमसंशयः
What is done with devotion surely leads seven generations of the family to heaven.
तिलमात्रं तु सौवर्णं विधाय कमलं शुभम्
By making a pure lotus of gold, even as small as a sesame seed,
नमस्ते पद्महस्ताय नमस्ते विश्वधारिणे
Salutations to the one with the lotus in hand, salutations to the supporter of the universe.
इति संप्रार्थ्य देवेशं सूर्ये चास्तमुपागते
Having thus prayed to the Lord of the gods, when the Sun has set,
तद्दिने तूपवस्तव्यं भोक्तव्यं च परे ऽहनि
On that day, one should fast, and eat on the following day.
निबव्रतं च तत्रेव तद्विधानं शृणुष्व मे
