एवं संप्रार्थ्य देवेशं गृहमागत्य वै स्वकम्
Thus having prayed to the lord of the gods, one should return to one’s own house.
एतदन्नव्रतं विप्र विधिनाऽचरितं नृभिः
O brāhmaṇa, this food-vow, performed by men according to the rule—
श्रावणे शुक्लपञ्चजम्यां नृभिरास्तिक्यतत्परैः
On the fifth day of the bright fortnight in Śrāvaṇa, by men devoted to faith—
गन्धाद्यैः पूजयेत्तांश्च तथेन्द्राणीमनन्तरम्
One should worship them with perfumes and the like, and then Indrāṇī immediately after.
गन्धैः पुष्पैस्तथा धूपैर्दीपैर्नैवेद्यसंचयैः
With fragrances, flowers, incense, lamps, and offerings of food,
संप्रार्थ्य भक्तिभावेन विप्राग्र्येषु समर्पयेत्
Having prayed with devotion, he should present them to the foremost of Brahmins.
तदनन्तफलं भूयान्मम जन्मनि जन्मनि
May the endless fruit of that be mine, in birth after birth.
प्रसन्नः स्याद्धनाध्यक्षः स्वर्णादिकसमृद्धिदः
The Lord of Wealth will be pleased and grant abundance of gold and the like.
पश्चात्स्वयं च भुञ्जीत दारापत्यसुहृद्दृतः
Afterwards, together with wife, children, and friends, he may partake of it himself.
भाद्रे तु कृष्णपञ्चम्यां नागान् क्षीरेण तर्पयेत्
On the auspicious Kṛṣṇa Pañcamī in Bhādra, one should satisfy the Nāgas with milk.
भाद्रस्य शुक्लपञ्चम्यां पूजयेदृषिसत्तमान्
On the bright fifth day of Bhādra, he should worship the eminent sages.
गृहमागत्य यत्नेन वेदिकां कारयेन्मृदा
Having come home, he should carefully prepare an altar of clay.
तत्रास्तीर्य कुशान्विप्रऋषीन्सप्त समर्चयेत्
There, spreading kuśa grass, he should duly honor the seven Brahmin sages.
कश्यपो ऽत्रिर्भरद्वाजौ विश्वामित्रो ऽथ गौतमः
Kaśyapa, Atri, Bharadvāja, Viśvāmitra, and Gautama,
एतैभ्यो ऽघ्य च विधिवत्कल्पयित्वा प्रदाय च
To these, having properly prepared and offered arghya, he should give it.
तन्निवेद्य विसृज्येमान्स्वयं चाद्यात्तदेव हि
Having offered to them and dismissed them, he himself should then eat that very offering.
कृत्वा व्रतान्ते वरयेदाचार्यान् सप्त वैदिकान्
At the conclusion of the vow, he should invite seven Vedic teachers.
जटिलाः साक्षसूत्राश्च कमण्डलुसमन्विताः
Who are matted-haired, wear sacred threads, and carry water pots.
स्नापयेद्विधि वद्भक्त्या पृथक्पञ्चामृतैरपि
He should bathe them separately with the five nectars, according to the proper rite and with devotion.
अर्घ्यं दत्वा ततो होमं तिलव्रीहियवादिभिः
Having given arghya, he should then perform a homa with sesame, rice, barley, and the like.
पुण्यैर्मन्त्रैस्तथैवान्यैर्हुत्वा पूर्णाहुतिं चरेत्
With auspicious mantras and others as prescribed, he should offer the full oblation.
आचार्यं पूजयेज्जैव वस्त्रालङ्कारभूषणैः
He should worship the teacher with garments, ornaments, and decorations.
भोजयित्वा तु तान्भक्त्या प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत्
After feeding them with devotion, one should bow and then dismiss them.
भुङ्क्त्वा वै षड्रसोपेतं प्रमुद्यात्सह बन्धुभिः
Having eaten food endowed with all six tastes, one should rejoice together with relatives.
सप्तर्षीणां प्रसादेन विमानवरगो भवेत्
By the grace of the Seven Sages, one attains the best celestial vehicle.
आश्विने शुक्लपञ्चम्यामुपाङ्गललिताव्रतम्
On the fifth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Ashvina, the Upangalalita vow is to be observed.
उपचारैः षोडशभिः पूजयेत्तां विधानतः
She should be worshipped according to the prescribed method with sixteen offerings.
द्विजवर्याय दातव्यं व्रतसंपूर्तिहेतवे
A gift should be given to a distinguished Brahmin for the completion of the vow.
मातर्मामनुगृह्याथ गम्यतां निजमन्दिरम्
Mother, having blessed me, please return to your own abode.
कर्तव्यं पापनाशाय श्रद्धया द्विजसत्तम
This should be performed with faith, O best of Brahmins, for the destruction of sin.
