ललिताव्रतमित्यन्यैः शान्तिव्रतमथापरैः
Some call it the Lalitā vow, others the Śānti vow.
भवेत्सह स्रगुणितं प्रसादाद्दन्तिनः सदा
It should always be observed together, adorned with garlands, by the grace of the elephant-god.
तिलषिष्टैर्द्विजान् भोज्य स्वयं चाश्नीत मानवः
One should feed the foremost twice-born with sesame offerings, and the person himself should also eat.
तिलैरेव कृतैः सिद्धिं प्राप्नुयात्तत्प्रसादतः
By acts performed with sesame, one attains success through his grace.
द्विजाग्र्याय प्रदातव्यं सर्वसंपत्समृद्धये
It should be given to the best of the twice-born for the increase of all prosperity.
सांगारका वा विप्रेन्द्र सा विशेषफलप्रदा
Whether with fire offerings or not, O best of Brahmins, it bestows special results.
विघ्नेश एव देवेशः संपूज्यो भक्तितत्परैः
The Lord of Obstacles himself, the Lord of the gods, should be worshipped by those devoted to faith.
यानि भक्त्या समास्थाय सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्
By undertaking these with devotion, one attains all desires.
अस्यां मत्स्यावतारार्चा भक्तैः कार्या महोत्सवा
In this, the worship of the Matsya incarnation should be performed with great festivity by devotees.
गन्धाद्यैरुपचारैस्तु नैवेद्यैः पायसादिभिः
With offerings such as perfumes and the like, and food offerings like milk-rice.
पृथ्वीव्रतं तथा चान्द्रं हयगरीवव्रतं तथा
Also, the Earth vow, the Moon vow, and the Hayagrīva vow should be observed.
अथ वैशाखपञ्चम्यां शेषं चाभ्यर्च्य मानवः
Then, on the fifth day of Vaiśākha, a person should worship Śeṣa.
तथा ज्येष्ठस्य पञ्चम्यां पितॄनभ्यर्चयेत्सुधीः
Likewise, on the fifth day of Jyeṣṭha, the wise should worship the ancestors.
अथाषाढस्य पञ्चम्यां वायुं सर्वगतं मुने
Then, on the fifth day of Āṣāḍha, O sage, one should worship Vāyu, who pervades all.
ध्वजं च पञ्चवर्णं तु वंशदण्डाग्रसंस्थितम्
And a five-colored banner should be placed at the top of a bamboo staff.
ततस्तन्मूलदेशे तु दिक्षु सर्वासु नारद
Then, at the base of that staff, in all directions, O Nārada,
प्रथमादिषु यामेषु यो यो वायुः प्रवर्तते
During the first and other watches of the night, whichever wind arises—
एवं स्थित्वा निराहारस्तत्र यामचतुष्टयम्
Thus remaining without food for four watches there—
लोकपालान्नमस्कृत्य स्वप्याद्भूमितले शुचौ
Having bowed to the guardians of the worlds, one should sleep on the pure ground.
स एव भविता नूनं स्वप्न इत्याह वै शिवः
That alone, indeed, will become a dream—so declared Śiva.
सोपवासो नयेदष्टयामं तद्दिनमेव वा
With fasting, one should pass eight watches, or even that very day.
व्रतमेतत्समुदितं शुभाशुभनिदर्शनम्
This vow, fully described, is an indicator of good and bad results.
श्रावणे कृष्णपञ्चम्यां व्रतं ह्यन्नसमृद्धिदम्
On the fifth day of the dark fortnight in Śrāvaṇa, this vow brings abundance of food.
पृथक् पात्रेषु संस्थाप्य जलैराप्लावयेत्सुधीः
Placing it separately in vessels, the wise should sprinkle it with water.
प्रातर्भानौ समुदिते पितॄंश्चैव तथा ऋषीन्
At dawn, when the sun has risen, to the ancestors and likewise to the seers—
तदन्नं याचकेभ्यस्तु प्रयच्छेत्प्रीतमानसः
That food should be given to beggars, with a mind full of delight.
गत्वा संपूजयेद्देवं लिङ्गरूपिणमीश्वरम्
Going, one should worship the god Īśvara in the form of the liṅga.
जपेत्पञ्चाक्षरी विद्यां शतं चापि सहस्रकम्
One should recite the five-syllabled mantra one hundred or even a thousand times.
स्तुत्वा सर्वैर्वौन्दिकैश्च पौराणैश्चाप्यनाकुलः
Having praised with all the Vaundika and Purāṇic hymns, remaining undisturbed—
शारदीयानि चान्नानि तथा वासंतिकान्यपि
The autumnal foods, as well as those of spring—
