क्षपयेदेकभक्तेन नक्तेनाथ द्वितीयकम्
One should observe the fast by eating once a day, and on the next day, at night.
एवं क्रमेण विधिवच्चत्वार्यब्दानि मानवः
In this manner, according to rule, a person should observe for four years.
कारयेद्धेमघटितं भूगणेर्मूषकं रथम्
One should have a golden chariot made, with a mouse for the lord of serpents.
तस्योपरि घटं स्थाप्य ताम्रपात्रेण संयुतम्
Upon it, a pot should be placed, together with a copper vessel.
न्यसेद्वस्त्रयुगाच्छन्नं गन्धाद्यैः पूजयेच्च तम्
It should be covered with a pair of cloths, and worshipped with fragrances and the like.
जागरैर्शीतवाद्याद्यैः पुराणाख्यानकैश्चरेत्
One should keep vigil with music, songs, and recitations of ancient tales.
तिलव्रीहियवश्वेतसुर्षपाज्यैः सखण्डकैः
With sesame, rice, barley, white mustard, clarified butter, and pieces of sugar-cake.
लंबोदरैकदन्तौ च रुक्मदंष्ट्रश्च विघ्नपः
Lambodara, Ekadanta, and Rukmadamṣṭra, the remover of obstacles.
गन्धमादी परमेष्ठीत्येवं षोडशनामभिः
With sandal and the like, and Parameṣṭhī—thus with sixteen names.
वक्रतुण्डेति ङेंतेन बर्मान्तेनाष्टयुक्छतम्
With the name Vakratuṇḍa at the beginning and Barmānta at the end, there are one hundred and eight in all.
दिक्पालान्पूजयित्वा च ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्ततः
Having worshipped the guardians of the directions, one should then feed the Brāhmaṇas.
सवत्सां गां ततो दद्यादाचार्याय सदक्षिणाम्
After that, one should give to the teacher a cow with her calf, along with the proper fee.
प्रणम्य दक्षिणीकृत्य प्रविसृज्य द्विजोत्तमाम्
Having bowed, given the fee, and respectfully dismissed the foremost Brāhmaṇas—
एतद्व्रतं नरः कृत्वा भुक्त्वा भोगानिहोत्तमान्
A man who performs this vow, after enjoying excellent pleasures—
केचिद्वरव्रतं नाम प्राहुरेतस्य नारद
Some, O Nārada, call this the 'Supreme Vow.'
पौषमासचतुर्थ्यां तु विघ्नेशं प्रार्थ्य भक्तितः
On the fourth day of the month of Pauṣa, one should devotedly worship Vighneśa.
एवं कृते मुने भूयाद्व्रती संपत्तिभाजनम्
When this is done, O sage, the observer of the vow becomes a recipient of prosperity.
तत्रोपवासं संकल्प्य व्रती नियमपूर्वकम्
There, having resolved to fast, the vow-observer should proceed with proper discipline.
ततश्चन्द्रोदये प्राप्ते मृन्मयं गणनायकम्
Then, when the moon rises, one should fashion an image of Gaṇanāyaka from clay.
उपचारैः षोडशभिः समभ्यर्च्य विधानतः
Worshipping him according to rule with sixteen offerings—
ततोर्ऽघ्यं ताम्रजे पात्रे रक्तचन्दनमिश्रितम्
Then, in a copper vessel, one should offer arghya mixed with red sandalwood.
सशमीपत्रदधि च कृत्वा चन्द्राय दापयेत्
Having placed śamī leaves and curd, one should offer it to the moon.
गृहाणार्घ्यं मया दत्तं गणेशप्रतिरूपक
O image of Gaṇeśa, accept the arghya given by me.
शक्त्या संभोज्य विप्राग्र्यान्स्वयं भुञ्जीत चाज्ञया
Having fed the foremost Brāhmaṇas to the best of one’s ability, one should eat oneself, with their permission.
समृद्धो धनधान्यैः स्यान्न च संकष्टमाप्नुयात्
He becomes endowed with wealth and grain, and does not encounter misfortune.
तस्यां तु गौरी संपूज्या संयुक्ता योगिनीगणैः
There, Gaurī should be worshipped, accompanied by groups of Yoginīs.
रक्तसूत्रे रक्तपुष्पैस्तथैवालक्तकेन च
With red thread, red flowers, and also with red dye—
पयसा पायसेनापि लवणेन च पालकैः
With milk, with rice pudding, with salt, and with cakes.
सौभाग्यवृद्धये देयो भोक्तव्यं बन्धुभिः सह
For the increase of good fortune, one should give and partake together with relatives.
प्रतिवर्षं प्रकर्त्तव्यं नारीभिश्च नरैस्तथा
This should be performed every year by both women and men.
