आचमय्य नमस्कृत्य संप्रार्थ्य च विसर्ज्जयेत्
After sipping water, bowing, and praying, one should conclude the offering.
निवेदयेच्च गुरवे द्विजेभ्यो दक्षिणां ददेत्
One should present the offering to the teacher and give gifts to the Brahmins.
उपास्य लभते कामानैहिकामुष्मिकान् शुभान्
By worshipping, one attains auspicious desires, both worldly and spiritual.
अथ तद्दोषनाशाय मन्त्रं पौराणिकं पठेत्
Then, to remove faults, one should recite the ancient mantra.
सकुमारक मा रोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमन्तकः
O child, do not weep; this is the Syamantaka.
इषशुक्लचतुर्थ्यां तु कपर्द्दीशं विनायकम्
On the fourth day of the bright fortnight, worship Kaparddīśa Vināyaka.
अकारणान्मुष्टिगतांस्तण्डुलान्सकपर्द्दिकान्
Without cause, take rice grains held in the fist, along with cowries.
तण्डुला वैश्वदैवत्या हरदैवत्यमिश्रिताः
The rice grains are for the universal deities, mixed with the offerings for Hara.
चतुर्थ्यां कार्तिके कृष्णे करकाख्यं व्रतं स्मृतम्
On the fourth day in the dark fortnight of Kārtika, the vow called Karaka is remembered.
पूजयेच्च गणाधीशं स्नाता स्त्रीसमलङ्कृता
One should worship the lord of the hosts, having bathed and adorned by women.
समर्प्य देवदेवाय भक्त्या प्रयतमानसा
Having offered with devotion to the god of gods, with a pure mind.
सुवासिनीभ्यो विप्रेभ्यो यथाकामं च सादरम्
One should respectfully give, as desired, to married women and Brahmins.
भुञ्जीत मिष्टमन्नं च व्रतस्य परिपूर्तये
One should partake of delicious food for the completion of the vow.
सपूगाक्षतरत्नाढ्यं द्विजाय प्रतिपादयेत्
One should give to a Brahmin betel nuts, grains, and precious gems.
उपायनं विधायाथ व्रतमेतद्विसर्ज्जयेत्
Then, having offered a gift, one should conclude this vow.
व्रतेनानेन सदृशं स्त्रीणां सौभाग्यदायकम्
There is no other vow for women that bestows good fortune like this one.
ऊर्ज्जशुक्लचतुर्थ्यां तु नागव्रतमुदाहृतम्
On the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Kārtika, the Nāga vow is prescribed.
पीत्वा स्नात्वाथ मध्याह्ने शङ्खपालादिपन्नगान्
After drinking and bathing at midday, one should worship Śaṅkhapāla and other serpents.
क्षीरेणाप्यायनं कुर्यादेतन्नागव्रतं स्मृतम्
One should offer nourishment with milk; this is known as the Nāga vow.
विषाणि नश्यन्त्यचिरान्न दशन्ति च पन्नगाः
Poisons are quickly destroyed, and serpents do not bite.
क्षपयेदेकभक्तेन नक्तेनाथ द्वितीयकम्
One should observe the fast by eating once a day, and on the next day, at night.
एवं क्रमेण विधिवच्चत्वार्यब्दानि मानवः
In this manner, according to rule, a person should observe for four years.
कारयेद्धेमघटितं भूगणेर्मूषकं रथम्
One should have a golden chariot made, with a mouse for the lord of serpents.
तस्योपरि घटं स्थाप्य ताम्रपात्रेण संयुतम्
Upon it, a pot should be placed, together with a copper vessel.
न्यसेद्वस्त्रयुगाच्छन्नं गन्धाद्यैः पूजयेच्च तम्
It should be covered with a pair of cloths, and worshipped with fragrances and the like.
जागरैर्शीतवाद्याद्यैः पुराणाख्यानकैश्चरेत्
One should keep vigil with music, songs, and recitations of ancient tales.
तिलव्रीहियवश्वेतसुर्षपाज्यैः सखण्डकैः
With sesame, rice, barley, white mustard, clarified butter, and pieces of sugar-cake.
लंबोदरैकदन्तौ च रुक्मदंष्ट्रश्च विघ्नपः
Lambodara, Ekadanta, and Rukmadamṣṭra, the remover of obstacles.
गन्धमादी परमेष्ठीत्येवं षोडशनामभिः
With sandal and the like, and Parameṣṭhī—thus with sixteen names.
वक्रतुण्डेति ङेंतेन बर्मान्तेनाष्टयुक्छतम्
With the name Vakratuṇḍa at the beginning and Barmānta at the end, there are one hundred and eight in all.
