ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेच्चैव व्रतस्यास्य प्रपूर्तये
And one should feed Brahmins as fulfillment of this vow.
स्वपितीति तिथिः पुण्या ह्यशोकशयनाह्वया
The auspicious lunar day called Ashoka-shayana is known as 'He sleeps.'
इममुच्चारयेन्मन्त्रं प्रणम्य जगतां पतिम्
One should recite this mantra, having bowed to the Lord of the worlds:
गार्हस्थ्यं मा प्रणाशं मे यातु धर्मार्थकामद
"May my household life not perish; may it proceed, O bestower of virtue, wealth, and desire."
भाद्रशुक्लद्वितीयायां शक्ररूपं जगद्विधिम्
On the second day of the bright fortnight of Bhadra, the form of Indra, the creator of the world—
आश्विने मासि वै पुण्या द्वितीया शुक्लपक्षगा
In the month of Ashvina, the second day of the bright fortnight is indeed auspicious.
ऊर्ज्जशुक्लद्वितीयायां यमो यमुनया पुरा
On the second day of the bright fortnight of the month of Ūrjja, Yama once visited the Yamunā.
पुष्टिप्रवर्द्धनं चात्र भगिन्या भोजनं गृहे
Here, nourishment and growth are achieved by the sister offering food at home.
वस्त्रालङ्कारपूर्वं तु तस्मै देयमतः परम्
Beforehand, garments and ornaments should be given to him, as is proper.
तस्यां स्वसुः करतलादिह यो भुनक्ति प्राप्नोति रत्नधनधान्यमनुत्तमं सः
Whoever eats from the hand of his sister on that day attains unsurpassed wealth, jewels, and grain.
आरोग्यं लभते चापि पुत्रपौत्रसमन्वयः
He also gains health and is blessed with sons and grandsons.
सर्वकामप्रदं नॄणामास्ते बालेन्दुदर्शनम्
The sight of the moon with a crescent grants all desires to people.
पूजयेत्साज्यसुमनेधर्मकामार्थसिद्धये
One should worship with ghee and flowers for the attainment of righteousness, desire, and wealth.
समभ्यर्च्य यथान्यायं पूजयेद्रक्तपुष्पकैः
After properly honoring, one should worship with red flowers.
ततः पूर्णं ताम्रपात्रं गाघृमैर्वापितण्डुलैः
Then, a full copper vessel should be offered, filled with ghee and rice grains.
एवं कृते व्रते विप्र साक्षात्सूर्य इवोदितः
When this vow is performed, O Brahmin, one rises like the sun itself.
इह कामान्वराम्भुक्त्वा यात्यन्ते ब्रह्मणः पदम्
Having enjoyed excellent pleasures here, one ultimately attains the abode of Brahman.
अथ फआल्गुनशुक्लाया द्वितीयायां द्विजोत्तमः
Next, on the second day of the bright fortnight of Phālguna, O best of twice-born,
पुष्पैर्वितानकं कृत्वा पुष्पालङ्करणैः शुभैः
One should make a canopy with flowers, adorned with auspicious floral decorations.
प्रसाद्य प्रणमेच्चैव साष्टाङ्गं पतितो भुवि
After pleasing, one should bow down, falling to the ground with eight limbs touching.
धनधान्यसमायुक्तो जीवेद्विर्षशतं ध्रुवम्
Endowed with wealth and grain, he will certainly live for two hundred years.
प्रोक्तं तदेव कृष्णासु कर्त्तव्यं विधिकोविदैः
This same rite should be performed in the dark fortnight by those skilled in ritual.
पूज्यते हि द्वितीयासु ब्रह्मचर्य्यादि पूर्ववत्
On the second day, worship is performed as before, with celibacy and other observances.
यानि सम्यग्विधायाशु नारी सौभाग्यमाप्नुयात्
Whatever a woman properly undertakes, she quickly attains good fortune.
सौवर्णा राजतीं वापि ताम्नीं वा मृण्ययीं द्विज
A container made of gold, silver, copper, or clay, O twice-born one,
दूर्वाकाण्डैश्च विधिवत्सोपवासा तु कन्यका
And with blades of sacred grass, according to the prescribed rite, the maiden should observe a fast.
द्विजभार्या भर्तृमतीः कन्यकां वा सुलक्षणाः
A twice-born man's wife who has a husband, or a maiden of good qualities,
रात्रौ जागरणं कुर्याद्व्रतसंपूर्तिकाम्यया
Should remain awake at night, desiring the completion of the vow.
धातुजां मृन्मयीं वा तु निक्षिपेच्च जलाशये
One should place an image made of metal or clay into a body of water.
धेनुद्वादशसंकल्पं दद्यादुत्सर्गसिद्धये
For the accomplishment of the offering, one should give twelve cows with due resolve.
