निर्मत्सराय शुचये देयं सद्वैष्णवाय च
It should be given to one who is free from envy, pure, and truly devoted to Viṣṇu.
मरूचये यथा प्रोक्तं ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना
As was declared to Marīci by Brahmā, the Supreme Lord,
क्रमतो मह्यमाख्याहि यथा स्याद्वतनिश्चयः
tell me in order how certainty in the lineage may be established.
यद्विधानं च पूजादेस्तत्सर्वं वद सांप्रतम्
And whatever the procedure is for worship and so forth, tell me all of that now.
तिथीशानुक्रमादेव सर्वसिद्धिविधायकम्
By following the sequence of lunar days and lords, all accomplishments are attained.
शुक्लपक्षे समग्रं वै तदा सूर्योदये सति
In the bright fortnight, when the sun has risen, the entire rite should be performed.
पूर्वविद्धैव कर्तव्या प्रतिपत्सर्वदा बुधैः
The wise should always perform the rite on the first day, even if it is partially joined with the previous day.
सर्वोत्पातप्रशमनी कलिदुष्कृतहारिणी
It dispels all calamities and destroys the misdeeds of the Kali age.
मङ्गल्या च पवित्रा च लोकद्वयमुखावहा
It is auspicious, pure, and brings forth the two worlds.
पाद्यार्ध्यपुष्पधूपैश्च वस्त्रालङ्कारभोजनैः
With water for washing the feet, arghya, flowers, incense, garments, ornaments, and food,
ततः क्रमेण देवेभ्यः पूजा कार्या पृथक्पृथक्
then, in order, worship should be performed for the gods, each separately.
सवस्त्रं सहिरण्यं च ततो दद्याद्दिजातये
After that, one should give to a twice-born person garments and gold.
एवं पूजाविशेषेण व्रतं स्यात्सौरिसंज्ञकम्
Thus, by this special mode of worship, the vow known as Saurisa is observed.
विद्याव्रतमपि प्रोक्तमस्यामेव तिथौ मुने
O sage, on this very date, the vow for knowledge is also prescribed.
अथ ज्येष्ठे सिते पक्षे पक्षत्यां दिवसोदये
Then, in the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha, on the seventh day at sunrise—
रक्ततन्तुरीधानं गन्धधूपविलेपनैः
One should offer red thread, incense, and fragrant ointments.
अभ्युक्ष्याक्षततोयेन मन्त्रेणेत्थं क्षमापयेत्
After sprinkling with unbroken rice and water, one should ask forgiveness with the mantra in this way.
दंभोलिमृडदुर्गादिदेवानां सततं प्रिय
This is always dear to Dambholi, Mrida, Durga, and other deities.
एवं भक्त्या समभ्यच्य दत्त्वा विप्राय दक्षिणाम्
Having thus worshipped with devotion and given a gift to a Brahmin—
नभः शुक्ले प्रतिपदि लक्ष्मीबुद्धिप्रदायकम्
On the first day of the bright fortnight in the month of Nabha, it bestows Lakshmi and wisdom.
सोमवारं समारभ्य सार्धमासत्रयं द्विज
Beginning on a Monday, O twice-born, for three and a half months—
पूर्णायां शिवमभ्यर्च्य सुवण वंशसंयुतम्
On the full moon, after worshipping Shiva, one should give gold along with bamboo.
दद्याद्विप्राय संकल्प्य धनवृद्ध्यै मुनीश्वर
Having resolved for the increase of wealth, one should give it to a Brahmin, O lord of sages.
व्रतं मौनाह्वयं केचित्प्राहुरत्र शिवोर्ऽच्यते
Some call this the vow of silence, in which Shiva is worshipped here.
फलानि पिष्टपक्वानि दद्याद्विप्राय षोडश
Sixteen kinds of fruits, either ground or cooked, should be given to a Brahmin.
सौवर्णं शिवमभ्यर्च्य कुम्भोपरि विधानवित्
After worshipping Shiva with gold, the one versed in ritual should place it atop a pot.
इदं कृत्वा व्रतं विप्र देव देवस्य शूलिनः
Having performed this vow, O Brahmin, for the god of gods, the wielder of the trident—
आश्विने सितपक्षत्यां कत्वाशोकव्रतं नरः
In the bright fortnight of Ashvina, a man should undertake the Ashoka vow.
अशोकपूजनं तत्र कार्यं नियमतत्परैः
There, those intent on discipline should perform the worship of the Ashoka tree.
समर्प्य गुरवे भक्त्या शिवलोके महीयते
Having offered it to the teacher with devotion, one is honored in the realm of Shiva.
