नानाधर्मकथाः पुण्याः प्रवृत्ते समुदाहृताः
Various virtuous stories of dharma have been set forth and recounted.
द्वितीये मोक्षधर्माख्ये मोक्षोपायनिरूपणम्
In the second section, called Mokṣa-dharma, the means to liberation are explained.
सनन्दनेन गदिता नारदाय महात्मने
These were spoken by Sanandana to the great sage Nārada.
मन्त्राणां शोधनं दीक्षामन्त्रोद्धारश्च पूजनम्
The purification of mantras, initiation, extraction of mantras, and worship are described.
गणेशसूर्यविष्णूनां शिवशक्त्योरनुक्रमात्
In order, the rites for Gaṇeśa, Sūrya, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and Śakti are given.
पुराणलक्षणं चैव प्रमाणं दानमेव च
Also, the characteristics of Purāṇas, authority, and the act of giving are described.
चैत्रादिसर्वमासेषु तिथीनाञ्चपृथक्पृथक्
For all the months beginning with Caitra, and for each lunar day separately.
सनातनेन मुनिना नारदाय चतुर्थके
By the eternal sage, to Nārada, in the fourth section.
अस्योत्तरे विभागे तु प्रश्न एकादशीव्रते
In the subsequent division, there is a question regarding the vow of Ekādaśī.
रुक्माङ्गदकथा पुण्यामोहिन्युत्पत्तिकर्म च
The virtuous story of Rukmāṅgada, and the origin and rite of Mohinī.
गङ्गाकथा पुण्यतमा गयायात्रानुकीर्तनम्
The most sacred story of Gaṅgā, and the narration of the pilgrimage to Gayā.
यात्राविधानं क्षेत्रस्य बह्वाख्यानसमन्वितम्
The procedure for pilgrimage to the holy place, accompanied by many legends.
हरिद्वारस्य चाख्यानं कामोदाख्यानकं तथा
The account of Haridvāra, and likewise the story of Kāmodā.
प्रभासस्य च माहात्म्यं पुष्कराख्यानकं ततः
Then the greatness of Prabhāsa, and the story of Puṣkara.
गोकर्णक्षेत्रमाहात्म्यं लक्ष्मणाख्यानकं तथा
The glory of the sacred place Gokarṇa, and likewise the story of Lakṣmaṇa.
अवन्त्याश्चैव माहात्म्यं मधुरायास्ततः परम्
Also the greatness of Avantī, and then of Madhurā.
मोहिनीचरितं पश्चादेवं पश्चादेवं वै नारदीयकम्
Afterwards, the deeds of Mohinī, and then the Nārada tradition.
स याति ब्रह्मणो धाम नात्र कार्या विचारणा
He attains the abode of Brahman; on this, there should be no doubt.
प्रदद्याद्दिजर्ंयाय संलभेन्मोक्षमेव च
If one gives it to a twice-born, one will surely attain liberation.
शृणुयद्वैकचित्तेन सो ऽपि स्वर्गगतिं लभेत्
Even one who listens with single-minded attention will attain the path to heaven.
पुराणं सुमहत्पुण्यं पठतां शृण्वतां सदा
For those who always read or listen to this great and meritorious Purana,
मार्कण्डेयपुराणं तन्नवसाहस्रमीरितम्
This is the Markandeya Purana, proclaimed in nine thousand verses.
पक्षिणां धर्मसंज्ञानं ततो जन्मनिरूपणम्
It contains the teaching on the dharma of birds, and then the account of births.
तीर्थयात्रा बलस्याथ द्रौपदेयकथानकम्
The pilgrimage of Bala, and then the tale of the sons of Draupadi.
पितापुत्रसमाख्यानं दत्तात्रेयकथ ततः
The story of father and son, and then the tale of Dattatreya.
मदालकसाकथा प्रोक्ता ह्यलर्कचरितान्विता
The story of Madalaka is told, along with the deeds of Alarka.
कल्पान्तकालनिर्देशो यक्षसृष्टिनिरूपणम्
The description of the end of the kalpa, and the account of the creation of the Yakshas.
मनूनां च कथा नानाकीर्तिताः पापहारिकाः
And the stories of the Manus, variously recounted, which remove sin.
तत्पश्चात्प्रणवोत्पत्तिस्त्रयीतेजः समुद्भवा
After that, the origin of the syllable Om, arising from the threefold Vedic energy.
वैवस्वतान्वयश्चापि वत्सप्रीश्चरितं ततः
Then the lineage of Vaivasvata, and the deeds of Vatsapri.
