द्वितीयो ऽयं समुदितः स्कन्धो व्यासेन धीमता
This second book was composed by the wise Vyasa.
सृष्टिप्रकरणं पश्चाद्बह्मणः परमात्मनः
Afterwards comes the section on creation, of Brahma, the Supreme Self.
सत्याश्चरितमादौ तु ध्रुवस्य चरितं ततः
First, the account of Satyāścara, then the story of Dhruva.
इत्येष तुर्यो गदितो विसर्गे स्कन्ध उत्तमः
Thus, the fourth and most excellent section concerning creation has been described.
ब्रह्माण्डान्तर्गतानां च लोकानां वर्णनं ततः
Then comes the description of the worlds contained within the cosmic egg.
अजामिलस्य चरितं दक्षसृष्टिनिरूपणम्
The story of Ajāmila and the account of Dakṣa's creation follow.
षष्ठो ऽयमुदितः स्कन्धोव्यासेन परिपोषणे
This sixth section has been declared by Vyāsa for nourishment.
सप्तमो गदितो वत्स वासनाकर्मकीर्तने
The seventh, dear one, is said to be about actions and impressions.
समुद्रमथनं चैव बलिवैभवबन्धनम्
The churning of the ocean and the binding of Bali's power are also described.
सूर्यवंशसमाख्यानं सोमवंशनिरूपणम्
The narration of the Solar dynasty and the account of the Lunar dynasty.
कृष्णस्य बालचरितं कौमारं च व्रजस्थितिः
The childhood deeds of Krishna, his boyhood, and his life in Vraja.
भूभारहरणं चात्र निरोधे दशमः स्मृतः
The removal of the earth's burden is here, and the tenth is known as the conclusion.
यदोश्च दत्तात्रेयेण श्रीकृष्णोनोद्धवस्य च
Of Yadu, by Dattātreya, and of Śrī Krishna and Uddhava as well.
भविष्यकलिनिर्द्देशो मोक्षो राज्ञः परीक्षितः
The indication of the coming Kali age and the liberation of King Parīkṣit.
सौरी विभूतिरुदिता सात्वती च ततः परम्
The glory of Sauri is described, and then the Sātvata as well.
इत्येवं कथितं वत्स श्रीमद्भागवतं तव
Thus, dear one, the Śrīmad Bhāgavata has been recounted for you.
साहाय्यकर्तुर्गदितं भक्तिभुक्तिविमुक्तिदम्
It was spoken by the helper, granting devotion, enjoyment, and liberation.
देयं भागवतायेदं द्विजायप्रीतिपूर्वकम्
This Bhāgavata should be given to a Brāhmaṇa with affection.
स पुराणश्रवणजं प्राप्नोति फलमुत्तमम्
He attains the highest fruit born of hearing this Purāṇa.
पञ्चविंशतिसाहस्रं बृहत्कल्पकथाश्रयम्
It consists of twenty-five thousand verses, based on the great narrative of the Kalpa.
नानाधर्मकथाः पुण्याः प्रवृत्ते समुदाहृताः
Various virtuous stories of dharma have been set forth and recounted.
द्वितीये मोक्षधर्माख्ये मोक्षोपायनिरूपणम्
In the second section, called Mokṣa-dharma, the means to liberation are explained.
सनन्दनेन गदिता नारदाय महात्मने
These were spoken by Sanandana to the great sage Nārada.
मन्त्राणां शोधनं दीक्षामन्त्रोद्धारश्च पूजनम्
The purification of mantras, initiation, extraction of mantras, and worship are described.
गणेशसूर्यविष्णूनां शिवशक्त्योरनुक्रमात्
In order, the rites for Gaṇeśa, Sūrya, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and Śakti are given.
पुराणलक्षणं चैव प्रमाणं दानमेव च
Also, the characteristics of Purāṇas, authority, and the act of giving are described.
चैत्रादिसर्वमासेषु तिथीनाञ्चपृथक्पृथक्
For all the months beginning with Caitra, and for each lunar day separately.
सनातनेन मुनिना नारदाय चतुर्थके
By the eternal sage, to Nārada, in the fourth section.
अस्योत्तरे विभागे तु प्रश्न एकादशीव्रते
In the subsequent division, there is a question regarding the vow of Ekādaśī.

The virtuous story of Rukmāṅgada, and the origin and rite of Mohinī.
