सो ऽपि पद्मपुराणस्य लभेच्छ्रवणजं फलम्
He too attains the fruit that comes from hearing the Padma Purāṇa.
त्रयोविंशतिसहस्रं सर्वपातकनाशनम्
Twenty-three thousand verses, destroyers of all sins.
मैत्रेयायादिमे तत्र पुराणस्यावतारिकाम्

The dialogue between Nidāgha and Ṛbhu is cited as the second section.
नरकोद्धारकं कर्म गदितं च ततः परम्
The actions that deliver from hell are described next.
श्राद्धकल्पं तथोद्दिष्टं वर्णाश्रमनिबन्धनम्
The rites of Śrāddha are also specified, along with the regulations for castes and stages of life.
तृतीयोंऽशो ऽयमुदितः सर्वपापप्रणाशनः
This third section is declared, destroyer of all sins.
चतुर्थेंऽशेमुनिश्रेष्ठ नानाराजकथान्वितम्
In the fourth section, O best of sages, are various stories of kings.
पूतनादिवधो बाल्ये कौमारे ऽघादिहिंसनम्
The killing of Pūtanā and others in childhood, and the destruction of evil in youth.
ततस्तु यौवने प्रोक्ता लीला द्वारवतीभवा
Then, in adulthood, are told the pastimes that took place in Dvāravatī.
यत्र स्थित्वाजगन्नाथः कृष्णो योगेश्वरेश्वरः
There, having established himself, Lord of the Universe, Kṛṣṇa, master of yogis, reigns.
अष्टावक्रीयमाख्यानं पञ्चमोंऽश इतीरितः
The story of Aṣṭāvakra is the fifth section, thus it is said.
ब्रह्मज्ञानसमुद्देशः खाण्डिक्यस्य निरूपितः
The section on the knowledge of Brahman has been explained by Khāṇḍikya.
अतः परं तु सूतेन शौनकादिभिरादरात्
After this, the Sūta, with reverence, was questioned by Śaunaka and the others.
नानाधर्मकथाः पुण्या व्रतानि नियमा यमाः
Various righteous stories, meritorious vows, observances, and disciplines were discussed.
वंशाख्यानं प्रकरणात् स्तोत्राणि मनवस्तथा
Genealogies, narratives, hymns, and the accounts of Manus were likewise presented.
एतद्विष्णुपुराणं वै सर्वशास्त्रार्थसंग्रहम्
This Viṣṇu Purāṇa is truly a compendium of the meanings of all the scriptures.
यो नरः पठते भक्त्या यः शृणोति च सादरम्
Whoever reads this with devotion, or listens to it with respect,
तल्लिखित्वा च यो दद्यादाषाढ्यां घृतधेनुना
Or writes it down and gives it, along with a cow rich in milk, during the month of Āṣāḍha,
स याति वैष्णवं धाम विमानेनार्कवर्चसा
He attains the abode of Viṣṇu, shining like the sun, riding in a celestial chariot.
कथयेच्छृणुयाद्वापि स पुराणफलं लभेत्
Whether he narrates or hears it, he obtains the fruit of the Purāṇa.
यस्मिञ्च्छ्रुते लभद्धाम रुद्रस्य परमात्मनः
By hearing which, one attains the supreme abode of Rudra, the Supreme Self.
श्वेतकल्पप्रसंगेन धर्मानत्राह मारुतः
In connection with the Śveta Kalpa, Māruta here spoke about duties.
सर्गादिलक्षणं यत्र प्रोक्तं विप्र सविस्तरम्
Where the characteristics of creation and so on are explained in detail, O brāhmaṇa.
गयासुरस्य हननं विस्तराद्यत्र कीर्तितम्
Where the slaying of Gayāsura is described extensively.
दानधर्मा राजधर्मा विस्तरेणोदिता स्तथा
The duties of charity and kingship are also thoroughly explained there.
