पिङ्गोर्ध्वकेशान्दधतं कपालं च गदां स्मरेत्
One should remember him as tawny, with hair upright, holding a skull and a mace.
चरुणा घृतसिक्तेन ततः क्षेत्रे समर्चयेत्
Then, with an offering moistened with ghee, one should worship at the field.
तस्मै सपरिवाराय बलिमेतेन निर्हरेत्
To him, together with his retinue, one should offer the bali with this rite.
भञ्जयद्वितयं भूयो नर्तयद्वितयं पुनः
Breaking twice and again dancing twice thereafter,
क्षेत्रपालबलिं गृह्णद्वयं पावकसुन्दरी
The bali for the Kṣetrapāla is to be taken twice by Pāvaka-sundarī,
सोपदेशं बृहत्पिण्डे कृत्वा रात्रिषु साधकः
The practitioner, having made a large piṇḍa with instructions, during the nights,
बलिनानेन सन्तुष्टः क्षेत्रपालः प्रयच्छति
Satisfied with this bali, the Kṣetrapāla grants (the boon).
उद्धरेद्बटुकं ङेंतमापदुद्धारणं तथा
He should draw forth the Baṭuka, the staff, and also the remover of obstacles.
शक्तिरुद्धो ध्रुवादिश्च द्वाविंशत्यक्षरो मनुः
The Śakti, the staff, and the fixed directions, and the mantra of twenty-two syllables—
बालं स्फटिकसंकाशं तल्लोललसिताननम्
A boy, shining like crystal, with a face radiant with playful delight—
सुप्रसन्नं स्मरेद्धक्त्या भक्तानामभयङ्करम्
One should remember him with devotion as supremely gracious, the giver of fearlessness to devotees.
तद्दशांशं प्रजुहुयान्त्तिलैर्मधुरसंयुतैः
One should offer a tenth part of that with sesame seeds mixed with sweet substances.
षट्कोणान्तस्त्रिकोणस्थव्योमपङ्कजसंयुते
Within a hexagon, in a triangle, joined with the sky-lotus—
भक्षयस्व गणैः सार्द्धं सारमेयसमन्वितः
Consume (this offering) together with the hosts, accompanied by the dog.
अनेन बलिना हृष्टो बटुकः परसैन्यकम्
By this bali, delighted, Baṭuka destroys the enemy army.
अङ्कशो वह्निशिखरो लान्तदान्त इतीरितः
He is said to be seated on the lap, with a crest of fire, and teeth blazing at the end.
अस्य त्रितो मुनिः प्रोक्तश्छन्दो ऽनुष्टुबुदाहृतम्
For this, the seer is Trita, the meter is Anuṣṭubh, as declared.
हृदयं दीप्तफट् प्रोक्तं ज्वलफट् शिर ईरितम्
The heart is said to be 'dīpta-phaṭ', 'jvala-phaṭ' is declared for the head.
हलफट् नेत्रमाख्यातं सर्वज्वानिनिफट् परम्
'Hala-phaṭ' is named for the eyes, 'sarva-jvāni-ni-phaṭ' is the supreme.
चण्डेश्वरं रक्ततनुन्त्र्यक्षं रक्तांबरावृतम्
Caṇḍeśvara, with a red body, three-eyed, clothed in red garments.
वर्णलक्षं जपेन्मन्त्रं होमं कुर्याद्दशांशतः
One should recite the mantra as many times as there are syllables, and perform the homa with one-tenth of that number.
पञ्चाक्षरोदिते पीठे मूर्तिं मूलेन कल्पयेत्
On the seat marked with the five-syllable mantra, one should establish the image with the root mantra.
हृदयं मनुराख्यातश्चण्डेशस्य प्रपूजने
The heart mantra is prescribed for the worship of Caṇḍeśa.
शैवमन्त्रेषु निष्णातश्चण्डेश्वरमनुं जपेत्
One who is well-versed in Śaiva mantras should recite the mantra of Caṇḍeśvara.
शृणु नारद वक्ष्यामि दिव्यं माहेश्वरं स्तवम्
Listen, O Nārada, I shall declare the divine hymn to Maheśvara.
यस्य पाठेन पूजायां सिद्ध्यन्ति मनवो ऽखिलाः
By the recitation of which, all mantras become successful in worship.
सर्वभूतान्तरस्थाय शङ्कराय नमोनमः
Salutations again and again to Śaṅkara, who dwells within all beings.
अतीन्द्रियाय महसे शाश्वताय नमोनमः
Salutations again and again to the transcendent, the great, the eternal.
भवाय भवसंभूतदुःखहन्त्रे नमोनमः
Salutations again and again to Bhava, the destroyer of the suffering arising from existence.
चतुर्वर्गवदान्याय सर्वज्ञाय नमोनमः
Salutations again and again to the generous bestower of the four aims of life, the all-knowing.
