ईशानः सर्वविद्यानां शशिनी प्रथमा कला
Īśāna is of all knowledge; the first digit is called 'śaśinī'.
ब्रह्माधिपतिः शब्दान्ते ब्रह्मणो ऽधिपतिः पुनः
The lord of Brahmā at the end of the word, again the lord of Brahman.
मरीचिः कथिता विप्र चतुर्थी च सदाशिवे
O sage, Marīci is said to be the fourth in Sadāśiva.
पूर्वपश्चिमयाम्योदग्वक्त्रेषु तदनन्तरम्
Next, on the faces facing east, west, south-west, and north.
आद्या तत्पुरुपायेति विद्महे शान्तिरीरिता
The first is called Tatpuruṣa, as we know; 'śānti' is declared.
विद्या द्वितीया कथिता तन्नो रुद्रः पदं ततः
The second is called Vidyā; then Rudra is the word after that.
निवृत्तिस्तत्परा सर्वा प्रणवाद्या नमोन्विता
All the mantras beginning with Om, accompanied by salutations, are entirely devoted to withdrawal.
अथोरसि कला न्यस्येदष्टौ मन्त्री यथाविधि
Now, one should place the eight kalās on the chest, with the mantras, according to the proper method.
अथ घोरेभ्य इत्यन्ते मोहास्यात्तदनन्तरम्
Then, at the end, after 'from the terrible ones,' comes delusion, and after that—
घोरतरेभ्यो निद्रा स्यात्सर्वेभ्यः सर्वतत्परा
From the more terrible ones comes sleep; above all, she is wholly intent on everything.
मृत्युर्निगदिता षष्ठी नमस्ते अस्तु तत्परम्
The sixth is called Death; salutations to her, who is supreme.
अष्टमी कथिता एताध्रुवाद्या नमसान्विताः
The eighth is declared to be these, beginning with Dhruvā, accompanied by salutations.
कट्यां पार्श्वद्वये वामकला न्यस्येत्त्रयोदश
On the waist, on both sides, one should place the thirteen left-side kalās.
स्याज्ज्येष्ठाय नमो रक्षा द्वितीया परिकीर्तिता
Salutation to Jyeṣṭhā; protection is said to be the second.
नमः संयमनी षष्ठी कथिता तदनन्तरम्
Salutation to Saṃyamanī, the sixth, is declared next.
नमो वृद्धिस्त्वष्टमी स्याद्बलान्ते च स्थिरा कला
Salutation to Growth; the eighth is declared to be Stability at the end of Strength.
सर्वभूतदमनाय नमोन्ते भ्रामणी कला
Salutation to the subduer of all beings; then comes the kalā called Bhrāmaṇī.
मनोन्मन्यै नमः पश्चाज्ज्वरा प्रोक्ता त्रयोदशी
Salutation to Manonmanī; afterwards, Fever is said to be the thirteenth.
पाददोस्तननासासु मूर्ध्नि बाहुयुगे न्यसेत्
One should place them on the feet, hands, nose, head, and both arms.
सद्योजातं प्रपद्यामि सिद्धिः स्यात्प्रथमा कला
I take refuge in Sadyojāta; accomplishment is the first kalā.
भवेद्युतिस्तृतीया स्यादभवे तदनन्दरम्
Radiance is the third; if absent, then after that—
मेधा स्यात्पञ्चमी प्रोक्ता कलाभूयो भवस्व माम्
Intelligence is said to be the fifth kalā; again, let the kalā become me.
उद्भवाय नमः पश्चात्सुधा स्यादष्टमी कला
Salutation to Udbhavā; afterwards, Nectar is the eighth kalā.
अष्टात्रिंशत्कलाः प्रोक्ताः पञ्च ब्रह्मपदादिकाः
Thirty-eight kalās are declared; five begin with the Brahma-pada.
ततः समाहितो भूत्वा ध्यायेदेवं सदाशिवम्
Then, having become composed, one should always meditate in this way upon Sadashiva.
अक्षैर्युतं ग्लौमुकुटं कोटिपूर्णेन्दुसंप्रभम्
He is adorned with a garland of akṣa beads, crowned with a topknot, and radiates with the brilliance of millions of full moons.
दधानंभूषणोद्दीप्तं घण्टापाशवराभयान्
He bears ornaments shining brightly, and holds a bell, noose, boon-bestowing, and fear-dispelling gestures.
प्रसूनैः करवीरोत्थैर्जुहुयात्तहृशांशतः
With flowers of karavīra, one should offer oblations to him with utmost joy, a hundred times.
आवाह्य पूजयेत्तस्यां मूर्तावावरणैः सह
Having invoked him, one should worship that form together with the attendant deities.
ईशानं त्रीक्षणं शुभ्रमैशान्यां दिशि पूजयेत्
One should worship Īśāna, three-eyed and radiant, in the northeast direction.
