कथितं चित्रगुत्पेन धर्मं सरसिसंभवम्
Citragupta has described the dharma that arose from the pond.
अधित्यकायां भूपाल सैकतस्य गिरेः परा
On the slope, O king, beyond the sandy mountain—
ततः कालान्तरे तेन वाराहेण नृपोत्तम
Then, after some time, by that boar, O best of kings—
ततो ऽन्यदामुया काल्याहस्त युग्ममितः कृतः
After that, at another time, by that same boar, a pair of ponds was made here.
पीतं क्षुद्रैर्वनचरैः सत्त्वैस्तृष्णासमाकुलैः
They were drunk by small forest-dwelling creatures, tormented by thirst.
हस्तत्रयमितः खातः कृतस्तत्राधिकं जलम्
A pit three hand-lengths deep was dug there, and more water was made.
भवांस्तत्र समायातो जलशोषाद नन्तरम्
You arrived there after the water had dried up.
ततस्तस्योपदेशेन मन्त्रिणो नृपते त्वया
Then, by the instruction of your minister, O king, you—
वृक्षाश्च रोपितास्तत्र सर्वलोकोपकारिणः
And trees were planted there, benefitting all people.
विमानं धर्म्यमारुढास्त्वमाण्येनं समारुह
Mounted upon a righteous celestial chariot, you ascended that vehicle.
आरुरोह विमानं तत्षष्ठो राजा समांशभाक्
That sixth king, sharing in the merit, ascended the celestial chariot.
श्रुत्वैतन्मुच्यते पापादाजन्ममरणान्तिकात्
Hearing this, one is freed from sin, from birth and death.
सो ऽप्याप्नोत्यखिलं पुण्यं सरोनिर्माणसंभवम्
He too attains all merit arising from the creation of the pond.
शिवस्यापि हरेर्वापि तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु
Now hear the merit gained by one who does this for Śiva or Hari.
कल्पत्रयं विष्णुपदे तिष्टत्येव न संशयः
For three aeons he surely abides at the feet of Viṣṇu—there is no doubt.
यावत्पुण्यं भवेत्तस्य तन्मे निगदतः शृणु
As much merit as is gained by him—hear that from me in detail.

कल्पत्रयं विष्णुपदे स्थित्वा ब्रह्मपुरं व्रजेत्
Having remained at the feet of Vishnu for three cycles of creation, one attains the city of Brahma.
ततस्तु योगिनामेव कुले जातो दयोन्विताः
Afterwards, one is born in the family of yogis, endowed with compassion.
दारुभिः कुरुते यस्तु तस्य स्याद्दिगुणं फलम्
Whoever constructs with wood, his reward is said to be twice as great.
स्फुटिकाभिः शिलाभिस्तु ज्ञेयं दशगुणोत्तरम्
With crystal or stone, the result is understood to be ten times greater.
देवालयं तडागं वा ग्रामं वा पालयेत्तु यः
Whoever protects a temple, pond, or village,
देवालयस्य शुश्रूषां लेपसेचनमण्डनैः
By serving the temple through plastering, sprinkling, and decorating,
वेतनाद्विष्टितो वापि पुण्यकर्मप्रवर्त्तिताः
Whether employed for wages or prompted by virtuous deeds,
ताडागार्द्धफलं राजन्कासारे परिकीर्तितम्
O King, the reward for a reservoir is declared to be half for a lake.
वापीशतगुणं प्रोक्तं कुल्यायां भूपतेः फलम्
The reward for a well is said to be a hundred times that for a canal, O ruler.
तयोः फलं समानं स्यादित्याह कमलोद्भवः
The result of both is equal, so declares the lotus-born.
भुवं तयोः समफलं प्राहुर्वेदविदो जनाः
Those who know the Vedas say that the earthly reward for both is the same.
दरिद्रः कुरुते कूपं समं पुण्यं प्रकीर्तितम्
If a poor man constructs a well, the merit is proclaimed to be equal.
