कत्कर्तुः सर्वपापानि नश्यन्त्येव न संशयः
All sins of the doer are certainly destroyed; there is no doubt.
स मुक्तः सर्वपापेभ्यः शतवर्षं वसेद्दिवि
He is freed from all sins and dwells in heaven for a hundred years.
सो ऽपि तत्फलनाप्नोति तुष्टः प्रेरक एव च
The one who inspires also attains that result, being pleased.
तिष्टत्यब्दशतं स्वर्गे विमुक्तः पापकोटिभिः
He remains in heaven for a hundred years, freed from millions of sins.
तडागपुण्यभाक्स स्यादित्येषा शाश्वती श्रुतिः
He obtains the merit of a sacred pond; this is the eternal teaching.
यं शृत्वा सर्वपायेभ्यो मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
Hearing this, one is freed from all sins; there is no doubt about it.
महाप्रतीपी विद्यावान्सदा विप्रप्रपूजकः
Mahāpratīpī, learned, always worships Brahmins.
तस्य राज्ञी महाभागा नान्मा चम्पकमञ्जरी
His queen, greatly fortunate, is named Campakamañjarī.
धर्माणां धर्मशास्त्रेस्तु सदा कुर्वन्ति निश्चयम्
They always resolve upon the righteous teachings of the scriptures.
विनाशास्त्रेण यो ब्रूयात्तमाहुर्ब्रह्मघातकम्
One who speaks without scripture is called a slayer of Brahman.
आचार्येभ्यः सदा भूपः शृणोति विधिपूर्वकम्
The king always listens to the teachers, following the prescribed rules.
धर्मेण पाल्यमानस्य तस्य देशस्य भूपतेः
Of the land ruled by the king, when protected by righteousness.
स चैकदा तु नृपतिर्मृगयायां महावने
Once, that king went hunting in a great forest.
दैवादाखेटशून्यस्य ह्यतिश्रान्तस्य तत्र वै
By fate, in that forest, he found no game and became extremely weary.
ततः शुष्कां तु सरसीं दृष्ट्वा तत्र व्यचिन्तयत्
Then, seeing a dried-up lake there, he reflected.
कथं जलं भवेदत्र येन जीवेदयं नृपः
How might there be water here, by which I, the king, could survive?
हस्तमात्रं ततो गर्त्तं खात्वा तोयमवात्पवान्
Then, digging a pit the size of his hand, he obtained water.
मन्त्रिणश्चापि भूमिश बुद्धिसागरसंज्ञिनः
There was also a minister named Bhūmiśa, called Buddhisāgara.
राजन्नियं पुष्करिणी वर्षाजलवती पुरा
O King, this lotus-pond was once filled with rainwater.
तद्भवान्मोदतां देव दत्तादाज्ञां च मे ऽनघ
Therefore, O sinless one, may you be pleased, lord, and give me your command.
मुमुदे ऽतितरां भूपः स्वयं कर्तुं समुद्यतः
The king rejoiced greatly and was eager to do it himself.
ततो राजाज्ञया सो ऽपि बुद्धिसागरको मुदा
Then, by the king’s order, Buddhisāgara also joyfully—
धनुषां चैव पञ्चाशत्सर्वतो विस्तृतायताम्
—made it fifty bows in length and breadth on all sides.
तां विनिर्माय सरसीं राज्ञे सर्वं न्यवेदयत्
Having constructed that lake, he reported everything to the king.
पान्थाः पिपासिता भूप लभन्ते स्म जलं शुभम्
Thirsty travelers, O king, found pure water there.
प्रमृतो गतवांल्लोकं लोकशास्तुर्मम प्रभो
Having wiped away his sins, he went to the world of the Lord of the World, my master.
चित्रगुत्पस्तु तत्कर्म मह्यं सर्वं न्यवेदयत्
But Citragupta reported all those deeds to me.
तस्माद्धर्मविमानं तु समारोढुमिहार्हति
Therefore, he is worthy here to ascend the chariot of righteousness.
विमानं धर्मसंज्ञं तु आरोढुं बुद्धिसागरः
Buddhisāgara ascended the chariot named Righteousness.
मृतो गतो मम स्थानं नमश्चक्रे मुदान्वितः
Having died, he came to my abode and joyfully offered his respects.
