Through unwavering devotion, a fortunate soul attains the exalted realm of Vishnu, a place from which return is difficult, as the wise have proclaimed. Indeed, it is by devotion to Hari that Vishnu becomes pleased, and when Vishnu himself appears, all fulfillment is assured—there can be no doubt. In this sacred tale, Vishnu entered the site of sacrifice, a place delightful to both mind and fire. There, Vamana, the divine form of Vishnu, swiftly rose and accepted the devotee with joined hands in reverence. With his family, bearing them atop his head, the devotee experienced supreme joy. His body was thrilled, his eyes overflowed with tears of happiness, and he spoke with deep emotion: “Today my life is truly fruitful; I am fulfilled—there is no doubt. By your mere arrival, O Lord, great celebration arises effortlessly. All the austerities performed in the past are now fulfilled. Therefore, to you I bow, to you I bow, to you I bow, again and again.” With utmost enthusiasm, he implored, “Command me, O Lord. Grant me a place to stand in penance, equal to three steps of land.” Vishnu responded, “A village, or a city, or wealth—what have you accomplished with these? For one whose kingdom is nearing loss, renunciation arises like hunger. For those devoid of all attachments, what purpose is served by these things? All this is in me, O Daitya; tell me, what is achieved by others? What can be accomplished with wealth for those whose nature is eternal bliss? For the one whose self is undivided from all, who is the giver, and what is given?” Vishnu continued, “All who abide in that command attain supreme happiness. Land must be given to Brahmins with utmost effort. The giver of land attains the highest liberation; there is no doubt about this. He attains the world of Brahma, which is difficult to return from. Know that this is the highest gift, destroying all sins. By giving land measuring ten hands, one is freed from all sins. There is nothing in any worlds equal to the gift of land. I am not able to describe its merit even in a hundred years. Whoever gives even a little land is Vishnu, without doubt. He who gives the earth is Vishnu; there is no doubt about this. By giving even a little land, one attains union with Vishnu. By giving, one obtains the fruit of bathing in the Ganges for three nights.” Vishnu then declared, “Hear what fruit is obtained by giving a plot of land the size of a trough. Whatever fruit is gained by performing, that is obtained in abundance. I will declare its merit; listen to my words. By giving on the bank of the Jahnavi, one surely attains that fruit. It removes all sins and bestows the fruit of liberation. Whoever hears it with faith attains the merit of gifting land.” At this point, the story turns to a poor man, deprived of livelihood, named Bhadramati, O mighty one, who had heard all the Purāṇas and the treatises on dharma.
