Listen, as the ancient wisdom unfolds the subtle order of auspiciousness and the workings of time. First, the sequence is revealed: vegetables, jaggery, salt, sesame, and gold each hold their place in the sacred order. Next, the twelve phases of the moon are described, moving through each zodiac sign in their proper sequence, marking the passage of time and the rhythm of cosmic events. The text then speaks of the destructive phase of the Vedas, the moment of the final arrow, and the last stage of cycles, all determined according to the sun’s portion. There are times marked by the consumption of mustard, the onset of fever, trembling, and finally, a stable condition—each phase is named and recognized for its significance. As the zodiac signs rise on the eastern horizon, they bestow their own qualities and auspiciousness upon earthly activities. When Aries rises, the sources of metals and acts of war are established. Taurus brings forth agriculture, trade, and all matters concerning livestock. When Gemini ascends, it is the time for elephant riding, coronations, and similar royal acts. Cancer rising is auspicious for nourishing activities, writing, and inscriptions. Leo presides over acts of valor, attacks, and royal matters, while Virgo is favorable for nourishing and all auspicious acts. Libra governs all actions related to commerce and weighing scales. When Scorpio rises, acts of theft and stable undertakings are best performed. Sagittarius is suited for movable, immovable, and mixed acts. Capricorn’s rising is good for departures and matters concerning livestock and servants. Aquarius is the time for acts involving water vessels, weapons, and tools. Finally, Pisces brings auspiciousness to adornment, water-related acts, and matters concerning horses. Yet, the influence of planets must always be considered. When these times are observed by cruel or fierce planets, the nature of the time becomes fierce. There are stars that are auspicious, inauspicious, and neutral, while others are considered sinful. If one is deprived of results by these influences, he attains only his own inherent nature. When, in the end, the result is insignificant, this holds true in every case. In calculations, if the Moon is strong, the planets in the seventh house are considered strong as well. The foundation of any undertaking is established by that which is to be supported, according to the prescribed boundaries. If the time is inauspicious, it will yield inauspicious results, except in the case of the lord of wealth. The results arising from the ascendant are given, while the second house is governed by the lord of wealth. An ascendant endowed with all virtues is rare and not easily obtained within a few days. If time is corrupted by a fault, even the Grandfather Brahmā cannot cleanse it. Even on the eighth, sixth, and twelfth lunar days, or the first day, if they are not purified, inauspiciousness remains. This is also true during the disturbance of twilight, the period of Viṣṭi, and at the first menses. A devoted wife, with hair adorned, on Sundays and the days that follow in order, is noted. Yet, the stars are not favorable during the months of Māgha, Jyeṣṭha, Śuci, and Pauṣa. An unchaste woman, indulging in sin, on censured stars and censured days, brings inauspiciousness. To remove all faults, one should give gold, cows, and sesame in charity. When the Moon is in a sign of strength, and the ascendant is aspected by male planets, a man desiring a son should avoid the lunar mansions of Puṣya, Mūla, Āśleṣā, and Pitṛ. In that month, the Puṃsavana rite should be performed, as well as the Sīmantonnayana. When both husband and wife possess strength, and the Moon and stars are also powerful, when the fierce and mixed Sun is absent, and the night is ruled by a male planet, when a benefic planet is present and visible, and malefic aspects are absent, then the time is auspicious. However, if malefic planets are present but the Moon is free from death, adversity, and enemies, then, without doubt, a powerful one may take away the pregnant woman or her fetus. Thus, the ancient sages have carefully described the order of auspicious and inauspicious times, the influence of planets and stars, and the rituals to be performed, so that all may act in harmony with the cosmic order and attain the best results in their undertakings.
