O wise one, listen as the signs and portents of destiny unfold through the celestial arrangements. When the ruler of the chart is exalted—be it in Taurus, Leo, Gemini, or joined with the Sun, or occupies the ascendant alongside Jupiter—then great fortune is indicated. If the Moon, Mars, or Jupiter reside in Cancer, or if the ascendant falls in the king’s own sign, auspiciousness follows. Should Saturn find its place in Capricorn, Aries, or the king’s sign, joined by Mars and other planets, it too becomes significant, O king. When the ascendant, Cancer, or Gemini is graced by Jupiter, Mercury, or Venus, and further blessed by benefic planets, prosperity shines forth. If Leo, Aquarius, or Capricorn are occupied, the king is firmly established in the sign of the boat—a symbol of steadiness and progress. So too, when Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Mercury in Taurus, and the Moon shines in the night, favorable outcomes are assured. Mercury’s presence in Virgo, Libra, or Aries brings renown to the king. The birth and qualities of the king’s son are to be discerned by these rules, O best of sages. If Leo, the Sun, Aries ascendant, Capricorn, Mars, Aquarius, or the eighth house is occupied, the lineage is marked. When the lords of the seventh, ninth, or twelfth houses are in the ‘lotus’ and aspected by benefics, auspiciousness grows, O sage. If a benefic of great strength occupies the ascendant, and there is abundance and auspiciousness, the mark of fortune is clear. Those who tread the paths of Aries and other signs are known as the children of the Moon, Sun, and the other luminaries. The Moon is strong in Taurus; the Sun is exalted in Libra; and the other planets are positioned in the remaining signs according to their natures. If Saturn, retrograde, is in the ascendant, and the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, and Mercury are placed in succession, a particular configuration arises. When the period of the tenth house, the ascendant, or the house of action comes, sovereignty is attained. When all planets gather in the two nearest angular houses, this is the ‘grouped’ formation. If the planets occupy the third, sixth, and eleventh houses from the ascendant, it is called the ‘plough’ formation. When the planets are mingled, and some are outside the houses of wind and thorns, the ‘lotus’ formation is present. If the planets are in the third, sixth, and eleventh houses from the ninth, it is ‘power’; in the fourth, seventh, and tenth, it is ‘quadrant’. Should the planetary ‘umbrella’ be above, beginning from one’s own sign and from another, it is named the ‘half-moon’ formation. When the planets are in the sixth, eighth, and twelfth houses, formations such as the ‘lute’ arise, with all seven planets involved. When the planets occupy movable signs, a royal yoga is declared. Benefic planets in angular houses from the ascendant form the ‘spear’ configuration, while malefics there create the ‘serpent’. When the planets are in fixed signs, formations such as ‘broken’, ‘lame’, ‘chain’, ‘garland’, and ‘staff’ are described. A donor placed in the house of wealth is prosperous; one associated with the ‘noose’ is wealthy and virtuous. In the conjunction called ‘yoke’, a heretic is found; in the ‘sphere’, the poor and impure are indicated. When the auspicious body is above, the one with the ‘upper garland’ is happy, heroic, and resplendent like a yak-tail fan. He who is radiant, renowned, and enjoys happiness is steadfast in resolve. But when power wanes, one is lowly, lazy, and destitute; in times of punishment, there is separation from loved ones. The Kemudruma yoga is known to bring difficult and harsh fate. Yet, when auspiciousness prevails, the person is healthy, of good character, renowned, well-attired, and free from affliction. Under Kemudruma, however, he becomes impure, unhappy, lowly, and poor. With favorable arrangements, he is reputed, skilled, learned, and wealthy; intelligent, versed in minerals, and knowledgeable in contracts, O sage. He becomes skilled in meaningful matters, humble, and well-regarded. He is a knower of poetry, acquainted with the virtues of ghee and honey, O sage. With Shukra, he is fit for games of chance; in the company of Samanda, he is a dancer and gambler. With Bhargava and Samanda, he takes to hunting and can be cruel, O Narada. With Kavi, he is slow, gentle-eyed, and wealthy in forest resources. And when Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and the Sun unite, the man becomes a wanderer. Thus, O wise one, do the stars and planets weave the destinies of men, shaping their fortunes, character, and paths upon this earth.
