In the ancient discourse, the sages described the subtle characteristics of life on earth, noting that the living beings here are marked by gentle, solar, lunar, and pleasant qualities, each manifesting in a harmonious order. The course of every creature’s life and death, they explained, is shaped by the influences of planets—both malefic and benefic—which reside in the signs preceding and following one’s birth. For even the smallest insect, the presence of these planetary forces determines the moment of death, and if such planetary configurations are not observed, then death inevitably comes for the one who is born. The sages went on to reveal that if Venus joins a planet occupying the death-sign and this occurs in one of the angular houses, the end of life is indicated at that moment. Conversely, if Venus is absent from the sixth house, death may come swiftly; but the presence of benefic planets in this house brings auspiciousness and prolongs life. If Venus is weak, and malefic planets occupy the ascendant, eighth, or twelfth house, or if other malefics are present, the threat to life increases. They further taught that if the Moon, conjoined with its mother, is aspected by malefics and lacks the aspect of benefics, or if the Sun is joined with or aspected by malefics, then death is certain to follow. When both the ascendant and the Sun are with strong malefics, and eight malefic planets are present, the span of life is greatly diminished. Should the lords of the sixth, eighth, or twelfth houses be strong, the person’s life is likewise limited. Yet, when these lords reside in their highest exaltation, supreme longevity is proclaimed. If benefic planets occupy their own signs, exalted or friendly signs, or are joined with the powerful lord of the body, they bestow long life. When benefics are placed in the trinal houses from the ascendant and Jupiter is exalted, or when strong planets are positioned in the angles and the eighth house is joined with thirty degrees of purity, longevity is further ensured. If the lords of the ascendant and the eighth both reside in the eighth house, a year of life is produced. When the lord of the ninth house is with Venus, or is placed in an angle, its own sign, the twelfth, or the ninth house, it brings its own results. If the lord of dissolution is with malefics or in the eighth house, life is measured in solar years. When Mercury and Venus are conjoined, and benefics occupy the ascendant or the house of death, their own specific results manifest. If the Sun is stronger, calculations for longevity are based on the Sun; if the Moon is stronger, the Moon is used as the basis. The reckoning proceeds in order by lunar day, solar day, nakshatra, and other divisions. The nakshatras, the Moon, the two halves of the month, and reckoning by the senses and the top of the head are also taken into account. When the astrological circle is pure, the portions assigned for longevity are those agreed upon by tradition. If a planet is in Manda (Saturn) or Shukra (Venus), or has set, half of its portion is not taken. The portions belonging to enemy planets are set aside, and only the remaining portions are used in the calculation of life. The portions of malefic planets are not taken in full, while those of benefic planets are taken without dividing in half. The remaining years, after subtracting from the solar years, are then considered as months and so on. When this remainder is divided by sixty, the quotient gives the number of months, and the leftover is further divided into days, hours, and so forth. The remaining years are multiplied by twelve and so on, to derive more precise divisions of time. Any portions of life associated with planets lacking longevity, even if joined with the ascendant, are subtracted from the total. If a planet is in the ascendant or the sixth house, the calculation follows a different method, not as previously described. In cases of equality among planetary influences, their shares remain; otherwise, the share of the planet is not obtained. The portions of life are determined by multiplying the relevant factors, which is known as the calculation. The remainder, when divided by two hundred, yields the months, and the remaining part is divided further for days and so forth. If the remainder is divided by the product of the Sun and other planetary values, the result gives months, days, and so on, according to the prescribed direction. The portion, when divided by the number of degrees and multiplied by the months and the product of the signs from the ascendant, gives the final result. Among the ascendant, Sun, and Moon, whichever is strongest, its period comes first. The one with the greatest longevity, or with equal strength among the Sun and others, is the first to receive its period. The results of the seventh, fourth, and those situated in the quadrants are also considered, as are the fruits of the seventh, fourth, and those in oceanic signs and the same group. For the fourth and eighth houses, the multipliers are declared as those of heaven. Thus, by the wisdom of the sages, the intricate web of planetary influences and their precise calculations reveal the mysteries of life’s duration, the timing of its end, and the auspiciousness or challenges that may arise along the way.
