O wise one, hear now the teachings as they unfold. In the cosmic order, kings, insects, and animals each gain strength when they occupy the angular houses, each according to their own place. Their hues are distinct: red, white, parrot-colored, pale, smoky, and yellowish, each corresponding to their nature. In the second house, there is equality, fame, and the quality of floating; the Sun presides as lord over this domain. Jīva is the signifier of knowledge and happiness, while Śukra stands for desire, and the Sun’s son brings sorrow. Among the planets, the Sun’s son is regarded as the minister, and the Moon’s son as the servant, as esteemed by the foremost astrologers. Śacī, Kaudhi, and Pārava are adorned with the colors white, yellow, and green. Be aware: those born under the waning Moon, the Sun, and Mars are malefic, and Mercury too can become malefic when joined with such influences. The sons of the earth and others dwell in peacocks, earth, water, and air, each finding their place. The lord of Saturn’s sign is known as the outcaste lord, and Rāhu is similarly the lord of foreigners. Among the deities, Indra, Agni, Raivata, Bhūka, Sakha, and the overlords are to be remembered. The stars themselves are split, radiant, and copper-hued, shining with their own luster. As the planets rise—Sun, Venus, Mars, Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn—they bring their influences in order. When Saturn and Jupiter are full, they are observed with special attention, O Nārada. Their tastes are sharp, bitter, alkaline, sometimes mixed with sweet, sour, or astringent flavors. The soul, the knower of souls, the knower of white, the enemies, and the adversaries are each to be understood in their proper sequence. So too with mutual wealth, expenditure, three types of relatives, business, and friendship, each finding their appropriate place in the order. Once more, it is taught that these should be assigned with the master of time, the overlord, the friend, and the companion, each preceding the next. In the directions, the gentle and worshipped are for the Sun and adversaries, for Saturn, for the white and lotus-born. Those situated in the north, radiant with rays, are considered active and strong. The cruel dwell in darkness, the gentle in whiteness; the wise consider time and strength in all things. The sinful are powerful, while the gentle are inclined to speech, especially when associated with thorns. The sinful remain in their own portion, while those who find themselves in another’s portion are gentle; the ascendant is said to be born of the sky itself. The head, neck, feet, both sides, back, and chest are all assigned to the signs, while the tail is found in the four-footed limbs; thus, the signs beginning with Aries are remembered. The lines, equal in sight and measure, are desired by those who dwell in memory. In the portion, the land and lotus, for Saturn, are brought forth by the conjunction of two, O twice-born. Land and water are produced by the Moon, and likewise for the others, it is declared. There are as many birds, land creatures, and water-born beings as there are divisions. On earth, thorny trees, both fruitful and fruitless, are to be known and honored. Even in an inauspicious sign, an auspicious planet may be found, just as an auspicious tree can grow from poor soil. For women, the influence of Mars and the Moon governs the monthly period. When malefic planets aspect the Moon, or when benefics do so with affection, the result follows accordingly. O best of Brahmins, a child is born to men endowed with good virility. If the Moon and Mars are together in the twelfth house and both are seen at once, they cause miscarriage. If benefics are in the fourth and tenth houses, they indicate the maternal uncle and paternal aunt. When the waning Moon is aspected by Mars, the woman is certain to meet death. At such a time, a pregnant woman will meet with death. If the Moon is lost and Mars occupies the sixth or eighth house, or if the lords of the second and seventh houses are afflicted, death ensues. If the lord of the month is lost, then that month should be avoided for conception. If the Moon is aspected by malefics from the sixth, eighth, or twelfth house, but is also aspected by the Sun, the pregnancy will be happy. Thus, O seeker, are the subtle influences and results of the planets and signs, as revealed by the sages.
