Alone and tormented by suffering, I wandered through the desolate wilderness, my heart heavy and my body weary. In that solitude, she who was with me revealed all the deeds she had committed in her life, confessing openly and honestly. The two of us remained together in that remote place for ten long years, sustaining ourselves on flesh and fruit we could find. During those years, we found a temple and, at night, we rejoiced within its sacred space, feasting on meat and finding some comfort in each other's company. But when the enjoyment of our allotted karma had come to its end, both of us departed from that life at the very same moment. As we delighted in dance, suddenly fierce messengers appeared before us, come to take us to the abode of Yama, the Lord of Death. Yet, because we had performed the rite known as the 'sanctification of the temple,' a wondrous thing happened. Messengers of the Lord of gods appeared—bearing conch, discus, and mace, crowned and adorned with earrings, garlands, and forest wreaths. They were both awe-inspiring and terrifying, brandishing weapons and displaying their fangs, and they drove away the attendants of Yama with great force. These divine messengers, devoted to Krishna, spoke firmly to those who sought to seize us: "Release this sinless couple, beloved of Hari." They proclaimed that one who harbors evil thoughts toward the innocent is the lowest of men, and that even one who, though innocent in thought, commits evil, is counted among the lowest of the low. The wicked, they said, are to be punished by Yama, but these two we shall take to him, for the discernment between righteousness and unrighteousness must be brought before Yama. The attendants of Yama replied to those who boasted of righteousness while acting unrighteously, saying that for those utterly lacking discernment, great calamity is the inevitable result. "Why are you so eager to commit sinful acts even now?" they asked. "Those who do so remain in dreadful hell as long as the moon, sun, and stars endure. Why would I again and again perform such sinful deeds? Instead, let us recount truthfully the righteous and unrighteous acts performed by these two." Upon hearing that we were protected by Hari, the Lord, the messengers declared, "Release them without delay." At the end of their lives, in the house of Vishnu, they were freed from sin through Him. One who serves Krishna attains the highest state—how much more so for those who have devoted themselves in service! Even a man who serves Krishna only at the end of his life attains the supreme goal; how much greater the reward for those who have served faithfully for years? Thus, the messengers swiftly departed, and even sinners were shown to attain the highest state through such devotion. These two, always serving in the house of Hari, worn and weary from their labors, were deemed greatly blessed and unworthy of torment. They ascended to the summit of the celestial chariot and reached the supreme abode of Vishnu. There, O best of sages, the two enjoyed divine pleasures for a long time. Even in this world, the measure of prosperity one receives comes by the grace of service to Hari. The result attained through such service is difficult even for the gods to obtain. For this reason, it is established that we shall attain the highest good. If such a result is born even from the giving of land, O lord of the earth, how much greater when done with faith! Those praiseworthy spouses then went to their own celestial abode. Service to Hari is remembered as being like the wish-fulfilling cow for all, for it grants the highest good and bestows the fruit of all desires. And whoever recites or even hears this sacred account also attains supreme delight.
