O King, listen as I recount the consequences faced by evildoers after death. Their punishments are dreadful: with terrifying saws, they are cut apart for their misdeeds. Now, hear of the terrible hell reserved for those greedy for others’ food; each soul dwells in these hells for a year, suffering the fruits of their actions. Let me tell you of those who consume food meant for the gods. Always absorbed in enjoyment and sin, they are relentlessly cooked in torment. Their agony continues as they are forced to bathe in briny water and to consume urine and excrement. Those who delight in disturbing others are sent to the river Vaitarani, a place of great suffering. One who abandons worship is cast into the hell called Raurava, where they are cooked in torments as countless as the stars, moon, and planets. Such a soul, along with a thousand generations, suffers in hell for five aeons, bearing the weight of a thousand acts of brahminicide. If one is born from an unnatural or non-human womb, or as an animal, after reaching the pit of fat, they remain there for as many divine years as their sin demands. Even brushing one’s teeth on a fasting day brings consequences. Abandoning one’s own duties marks a person as a heretic in the eyes of the wise. For a thousand million aeons, such souls are purified by passing through hells in succession, experiencing sin equal in gravity to brahminicide. For thousands of millions of aeons, they dwell in hell, enduring the fruits of their misdeeds. Listen closely as I describe these consequences. Those who constantly delight in drinking smoke remain for a year of Brahma, suffering a sin as grave as killing a fetus, with consequences exceedingly terrible. Hear now of those who eat the remnants of food in water: they are tormented intensely in boiling hot oil, suffering great agony. Whoever destroys sacred wood or sandalwood incurs the same fate. O King, even the theft of sacred property brings suffering in this very world. Listen to the result for one who gives false testimony: his sons perish, and he meets a violent end. Mortals who are excessively lustful or who spread false rumors are sprinkled with caustic brine for sixty thousand years. Afterwards, they are cast down by elephants, just as the wind causes a fall. O lord of men, one who does not approach his own wife at the proper season, or who fails to restrain another from improper conduct when able, faces consequences as well. Those who count the sins of the wicked and report them to others, or who falsely accuse an innocent person of sin, share in the burden: half the sin of the slandered wicked passes to them. Such souls experience torment among sword-leaved trees and are reborn on earth with defective limbs. They attain a most dreadful and painful state, feeding only on phlegm. For them, there is no expiation, even with thousands of acts of atonement. Then, one born in a Chandala womb will always be an eater of cow flesh. Having endured all torments, the Chandala remains so for ten births, bearing the consequences of their actions through many lifetimes. Thus, O King, these are the fates of those who commit such sins, each punishment befitting the nature of their transgressions.
