યમ pleased with him, granted him the ultimate knowledge of liberation. After fulfilling all duties, they approached the eternal શ્રીકૃષ્ણ. Whoever listens to their deeds and is slain, does not face untimely death; in both this world and the next, they enjoy endless happiness. From અજમીઢ અને ધૂમિની, a learned son named યવીનર was born. His son was the steadfast સત્યધૃતિ, and from સત્યધૃતિ came the mighty દૃઢનેમી. દૃઢનેમી’s son was the king સુધર્મા, whose son was સાર્વભૌમ, a powerful sovereign. સાર્વભૌમ became famous as the sole ruler of the earth, and in his lineage was born the illustrious મહાપૌરવ. મહાપૌરવ’s son was the king રુક્મરથ, and his son was સુપાર્શ્વ. સુપાર્શ્વ’s son was સુમતિ, who was righteous and virtuous, and his son was the humble king સંનતિ. To સંનતિમત was born a great son named કૃત, who became a disciple of the noble કૌશલ્ય, the renowned હિરણ્યનાભ. કૃત taught the સામ સંહિતાઓ in twenty-four divisions. The Eastern Sāmans were composed by કૃત, and their singers are called સામગ. Then came ઉગ્રાયુધ, enhancer of the મહાપૌરવ line, who by his valor slew પૃથુકા’s father. There was a king named નીલ, lord of પાંચાલas, heir of ઉગ્રાયુધ, and obedient. Then came ક્ષેમ, of great fame. From him was born સુનીથ, then from સુનીથ, નૃપંજય, and then વિરથ. These are the praised પૌરવs. Now, from અજમીઢ and નીલિની, was born king નીલ. From નીલ, through intense austerity, came સુશાંતિ. From સુશાંતિ was born પુરુજાનુ, then from પુરુજાનુ, પૃથુ, and from પૃથુ, ભદ્રાશ્વ. Now, let us hear of the sons of ભદ્રાશ્વ: મુદગલ, જય, king બૃહદિષુ, brave જવીનર, and fifth, કપિલ. These five are known as પાંચાલas, the protectors of the પાંચાલ lands. From મુદગલ, through ઔદગલ્ય, were born twice-borns with qualities of ક્ષત્રિય, known as કાણ્વ-મુદગલas, who took refuge in the lineage of અંગિરસ. મુદગલ’s son was most devoted to બ્રહ્મ and famed; his son was ઇન્દ્રસેન, and ઇન્દ્રસેન’s son was વિંધ્યાશ્વ. From વિંધ્યાશ્વ, by મેનકા, was born a pair, as tradition says: the royal sage દિવોદાસ and the illustrious અહલ્યા. From અહલ્યા, the heir of શરદ્વત was born: the eminent sage શતાનંદ, who was himself very austere. His son was સત્યધૃતિ, master of archery; from સત્યધૃતિ came શુક્ર, righteous and unfailing. Satyadhṛti’s seed, fallen into water, was seen by an અપ્સરા; in that lake, a pair was conceived. As they moved in the lake, king શંતનુ, who was hunting, saw them and, moved by compassion, took them. These are the sons of શરદ્વત, renowned among the ગૌતમs. Now, let us hear of the descendants of દિવોદાસ. His heir was righteous king મિત્રાયુ, foremost of the મૈત્રાયણas; from him was born મૈત્રેય, as remembered. These are the descendants of the sage, and the ભારગવs who took up ક્ષત્રિય duties; and king ચૈદ્યવર, remembered as the son of મૈત્રેય. From ચૈદ્યવર came the learned સુદાસ, his son; and અજમીઢ was born again, and when the line declined, came સોમક. Somaka’s son was જંતુ; when he was slain, a hundred sons of great-souled અજમીઢ and સોમક flourished. Queen ધૂમિની, wife of અજમીઢ, desiring a son, undertook severe austerities for one hundred years in the absence of a child. She performed proper oblations into the fire, purified her food, and steadfast in her vow, slept as per agnihotra rites. Into her, whose complexion was smoky, અજમીઢ entered; she gave birth to ઋક્ષા, called ધૂમવર્ણ, the eldest of a hundred. From ઋક્ષા was born સંવરણ; from સંવરણ, came કુરુ, who crossed પ્રયાગ and established કુરુક્ષેત્ર. The great king કુરુ cultivated the land for many years; while he was cultivating, frightened, ઇન્દ્ર granted him a boon. Thus, કુરુક્ષેત્ર became renowned as sacred and delightful; his vast lineage is known as the કૌરવs. Kuru’s beloved sons were સુધન્વન, જહ્નુ, the splendid પરિક્ષિત, and પ્રજન, the crusher of foes. Sudhanvan’s heir was ચ્યવન, foremost among the wise; ચ્યવન’s son was king કૃમિ, who understood dharma and artha. Cyavana’s son was Kṛmi, born from ઋક્ષા, a great ascetic; Kṛmi’s son, equal to ઇન્દ્ર in might, was વિભુ, of great valor. The heroic ચૈદ્યોપરિચર, called વસુs, dwelled in the sky; from him was born ગિરિકા, who had seven sons: the great chariot-warrior, king of મગધ, famed as બૃહદ્રથ; then પ્રતિયશ્રવા, કુશ, fourth હરિવાહન, fifth યજુ, sixth મત્સ્ય, and seventh કાલી. Bṛhadratha’s heir was કુશાગ્ર, renowned by name. Thus, the sacred lineage and deeds of these noble kings and sages were preserved, bringing glory and dharma to the lands for generations.
