‘As for me, know that I am the servant of your son and of you, O great-vowed one, if this can be accomplished by action here.’
‘See me now, wholly devoted to your worship; if I should fail, O best of sages, let the defeat be mine alone.’
‘I am blessed, I am favored, for you, my teacher, stand before me; by this austerity, O virtuous one, I have no fear today.’
‘Take up this very illusion, created by my son—fire-formed, without fuel, unconquerable even by flames.’
‘This will serve to subdue or restrain your own lineage; it will protect your allies and consume your enemies.’
Saying, ‘So be it,’ he took that power, bowed to the foremost sage, and, his purpose accomplished, the lord of the Daityas joyfully went to heaven.
This illusion, hard to withstand even for the gods, was created long ago by Aurva, son of Urva, from fire.
But when that Daitya was overthrown, this power became ineffective—there is no doubt; for a curse had been placed upon it by the very one who created it.
If this is to be checked, and the Blessed One is to be made happy, let me be given as a companion Soma, Indra, Varuna, and the Moon.
With them, and surrounded by the Yadus, I will destroy this illusion by your favor—of this there is no doubt.
‘So be it,’ said Indra, rejoicing, the increaser of the gods, and he summoned Soma, the cool-armed one, to the front for battle.
‘Go, Soma, and aid the wielder of the noose, for the destruction of the Asuras and the victory of the gods.’
‘You are equal to me in power, and lord of the lords of light; those who know taste declare that all essence in the worlds is yours.’
‘Your waxing and waning are manifest, like the circle of the ocean; you set the course of day and night, joining time in the world.’
Your mark upon the body, resembling the moon, is made of the shadow of the world; even the gods and those born from the stars do not know it, O Soma.
You are situated above the path of the sun and above the lights; dispelling darkness with your radiance, you illuminate the entire world.
White-shining, cool-bodied, lord of the lights, you are the moon; appointed as the soul of time's union, beloved, the essence of sacrifice, imperishable.
Lord of plants, source of rituals, bearer of the crest of Hara, cool-rayed, holder of nectar, restless, with a white vehicle.
You are the radiance among those with radiant forms; you are Soma among those who drink Soma; you are gentle among all beings, destroyer of darkness, and ruler of the stars.
Go, then, with Mahasena and Varuna with his troops; pacify the demonic illusion by which we are burned in battle.
That which you ask of me for the sake of battle, O king of gods, bestower of boons, I now send forth coolness, drawing away the demon's illusion.
Behold those burned by my coolness, wrapped in frost, their illusions and pride destroyed, those lion-like demons in the great battle.
Having spoken thus, the lord of the stars, master of waters, flooded the armies of the gods with Shiva's waters for the increase of peace.
The icy rains released by the moon, with ropes, enveloped those fierce demons like clusters of clouds.
