ददृशुस्ते स्थितं देवं दिव्ये लोकमये रथे ते कृताञ्जलयः सर्वे देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः
There the gods saw that divine one, standing in a celestial, world-encompassing chariot; all the gods, led by Indra, joined their palms in reverence.
जयशब्दं पुरस्कृत्य शरण्यं शरणं गताः स तेषां तां गिरं श्रुत्वा विष्णुर्दैवतदैवतम्
Having proclaimed a cry of victory, they sought refuge in him, the protector; hearing their words, Viṣṇu, the god of gods, responded.
मनश्चक्रे विनाशाय दानवानां महामृधे आकाशे तु स्थितो विष्णुर् उत्तमं वपुरास्थितः
He resolved in his mind to destroy the Dānavas in the great battle; Viṣṇu, standing in the sky, assumed his supreme form.
उवाच देवताः सर्वाः सप्रतिज्ञमिदं वचः शान्तिं व्रजत भद्रं वो मा भैष्ट मरुतां गणाः
He spoke these words, with a vow, to all the gods: 'Go in peace, blessings to you, do not fear, O hosts of the Maruts.'
जिता मे दानवाः सर्वे त्रैलोक्यं परिगृह्यताम् ते तस्य सत्यसंधस्य विष्णोर्वाक्येन तोषिताः
'All the Dānavas have been conquered by me; let the three worlds be possessed by you.' Pleased by the truthful words of Viṣṇu, they rejoiced.
देवाः प्रीतिं समाजग्मुः प्राश्यामृतमिवोत्तमम् ततस्तमः संहृतं तद् विनेशुश्च बलाहकाः
The gods attained joy, as if they had tasted the finest nectar; then the darkness was dispelled, and the clouds vanished.
प्रववुश्च शिवा वाताः प्रशान्ताश्च दिशो दश शुद्धप्रभाणि ज्योतींषि सोमश्चक्रुः प्रदक्षिणाम्
Auspicious winds blew, the ten directions became tranquil, pure lights shone, and the moon moved in a rightward course.
न विग्रहं ग्रहाश्चक्रुः प्रशान्ताश्चापि सिन्धवः विरजस्काभवन्मार्गा नाकवर्गादयस्त्रयः
The planets did not engage in conflict, the rivers became calm, the paths became clear, and the three celestial classes were pure.
यथार्थमूहुः सरितो नापि चुक्षुभिरे ऽर्णवाः आसञ्छुभानीन्द्रियाणि नराणामन्तरात्मसु
The rivers flowed as they should, the oceans were undisturbed, and pure senses arose within the hearts of men.
महर्षयो वीतशोका वेदान् उच्चैरधीयत यज्ञेषु च हविः पाकं शिवमाप च पावकः
The great sages, free from sorrow, recited the Vedas aloud; in the sacrifices, the fire received the offering and became auspicious.
प्रवृत्तधर्माः संवृत्ता लोका मुदितमानसाः विष्णोर्दत्तप्रतिज्ञस्य श्रुत्वारिनिधने गिरम्
The worlds, established in righteousness, became joyful in heart, having heard the words of Viṣṇu, who had vowed to destroy the enemies.
ततो ऽभयं विष्णुवचः श्रुत्वा दैत्याश्च दानवाः उद्योगं विपुलं चक्रुर् युद्धाय विजयाय च
Then, having heard Viṣṇu's words of assurance, the Daityas and Dānavas made great preparations for battle and victory.
मयस्तु काञ्चनमयं त्रिनल्वायतमक्षयम् चतुश्चक्रं सुविपुलं सुकल्पितमहायुगम्
But for me, there was a chariot made of gold, three and a half yojanas long, imperishable, with four great wheels, vast and splendidly constructed with a mighty yoke.
किङ्किणीजालनिर्घोषं द्वीपिचर्मपरिष्कृतम् रुचिरं रत्नजालैश्च हेमजालैश्च शोभितम्
It resounded with the jingling of small bells, adorned with tiger and leopard skins, and shone beautifully with networks of gems and golden lattices.
ईहामृगगणाकीर्णं पक्षिपङ्क्तिविराजितम् दिव्यास्त्रतूणीरधरं पयोधरविनादितम्
It was thronged with herds of antelopes, graced by rows of birds, equipped with divine quivers of arrows, and echoed with the sound of thunderclouds.
स्वक्षं रथवरोदारं सूपस्थं गगनोपमम् गदापरिघसम्पूर्णं मूर्तिमन्तमिवार्णवम्
Its own axle was broad and noble, well-placed, resembling the sky; it was filled with maces and iron clubs, like the embodied ocean itself.
हेमकेयूरवलयं स्वर्णमण्डलकूबरम् सपताकध्वजोपेतं सादित्यमिव मन्दरम्
It was adorned with golden armlets and bracelets, with golden circular hubs, furnished with banners and flags, like the sun with Mount Mandara.
गजेन्द्राभोगवपुषं क्वचित्केसरिवर्चसम् युक्तमृक्षसहस्रेण समृद्धाम्बुदनादितम्
In some places, it had the appearance of the lord of elephants, shining with the radiance of a lion, yoked to a thousand bears, and resounded like a full, thundering cloud.
दीप्तमाकाशगं दिव्यं रथं पररथारुजम् अध्यतिष्ठद्रणाकाङ्क्षी मेरुं दीप्त इवांशुमान्
That radiant, celestial, sky-going chariot, capable of shattering enemy chariots, was mounted by the eager warrior, shining like the sun upon Mount Meru.
तारमुत्क्रोशविस्तारं सर्वं हेममयं रथम् शैलाकारमसंबाधं नीलाञ्जनचयोपमम्
That entire chariot, golden, vast as a mountain, with a broad and far-reaching platform, unconfined, resembled a mass of dark collyrium.
कार्ष्णायसमयं दिव्यं लोहेषाबद्धकूबरम् तिमिरोद्गारिकिरणं गर्जन्तमिव तोयदम्
It was made of black iron, divine, with iron-bound hubs, emitting rays like rising darkness, roaring like a raincloud.
लोहजालेन महता सगवाक्षेण दंशितम् आयसैः परिघैः पूर्णं क्षेपणीयैश्च मुद्गरैः
It was covered with a great lattice of iron, fitted with windows, filled with iron clubs and throwing maces.
प्रासैः पाशैश्च विततैर् असंयुक्तैश्च कण्टकैः शोभितं त्रासयानैश्च तोमरैश्च परश्वधैः
It was adorned with spears and nooses spread out, and with spikes not joined together, and with terrifying javelins and battle-axes.
उद्यन्तं द्विषतां हेतोर् द्वितीयमिव मन्दरम् युक्तं खरसहस्रेण सो ऽध्यारोहद्रथोत्तमम्
Rising up for the destruction of enemies, like a second Mandara mountain, yoked to a thousand donkeys, he ascended that supreme chariot.
विरोचनस्तु संक्रुद्धो गदापाणिरवस्थितः प्रमुखे तस्य सैन्यस्य दीप्तशृङ्ग इवाचलः
Virocana, enraged, stood with mace in hand at the front of his army, like a blazing-peaked mountain.

त्वष्टा त्वष्टगजं घोरं यानमास्थाय दानवः व्यूहितुं दानवव्यूहं परिचक्राम वीर्यवान्
Tvaṣṭṛ, the mighty demon, mounting his fierce, specially crafted elephant, moved about to arrange the demon army formation.
विप्रचित्तिसुतः श्वेतः श्वेतकुण्डलभूषणः श्वेतशैलप्रतीकाशो युद्धायाभिमुखे स्थितः
Śveta, son of Vipracitti, adorned with white earrings, resembling a white mountain, stood facing the battle.
