अग्निं चक्षुं रविर्ज्योतिः सावित्रं मित्रमेव च अमरं शरवृष्टिं च सुकर्षं च महाभुजम्
Agni, the eye, the sun, the light, Sāvitra, Mitra, the immortal, the shower of arrows, Sukarṣa, and the mighty-armed.
विराजं चैव वाचं च विश्वावसुमतिं तथा अश्वमित्रं चित्ररश्मिं तथा निषधनं नृप
Virāja, speech, Viśvāvasu, Mati, Aśvamitra, Citraraśmi, Niṣadhana, O king.
हूयन्तं वाडवं चैव चारित्रं मन्दपन्नगम् बृहन्तं वै बृहद्रूपं तथा वै पूतनानुगम्
Hūyanta, Vāḍava, Cāritra, Mandapannaga, Bṛhanta, Bṛhadrūpa, and Pūtanānuga likewise.
मरुत्वती पुरा जज्ञ एतान्वै मरुतां गणान् अदितिः कश्यपाज्जज्ञ आदित्यान्द्वादशैव हि
Marutvatī formerly gave birth to these groups of Maruts; Aditi gave birth to twelve Ādityas from Kaśyapa.
इन्द्रो विष्णुर्भगस्त्वष्टा वरुणो ह्यर्यमा रविः पूषा मित्रश्च धनदो धाता पर्जन्य एव च
Indra, Viṣṇu, Bhaga, Tvaṣṭṛ, Varuṇa, Aryaman, Ravi, Pūṣā, Mitra, Dhanada, Dhātṛ, and Parjanya as well.
इत्येते द्वादशादित्या वरिष्ठास्त्रिदिवौकसः आदित्यस्य सरस्वत्यां जज्ञाते द्वौ सुतौ वरौ
These twelve Ādityas are the foremost among the dwellers of heaven; two excellent sons of Āditya were born from Sarasvatī.
तपःश्रेष्ठौ गुणश्रेष्ठौ त्रिदिवस्यापि संमतौ दनुस्तु दानवाञ्जज्ञे दितिर्दैत्यान्व्यजायत
Excelling in austerity and virtue, honored even in heaven; Danu gave birth to the Dānavas, Diti gave birth to the Daityas.
काला तु वै कालकेयान् असुरान्सुरसा तु वै अनायुषायास्तनया व्याधयः सुमहाबलाः
Kālā gave birth to the Kālakeyas, the Asuras; Surasā gave birth to sons of immense strength, diseases with short lives.
सिंहिका ग्रहमाता वै गन्धर्वजननी मुनिः ताम्रा त्वप्सरसां माता पुण्यानां भारतोद्भव
Simhikā is the mother of planets, Gandharva's progenitor is Muni; Tāmrā is the mother of Apsarases, the virtuous, O descendant of Bharata.
क्रोधायाः सर्वभूतानि पिशाचाश्चैव पार्थिव जज्ञे यक्षगणांश्चैव राक्षसांश्च विशांपते
From Krodhā came all beings and Piśācas, O king; Yakṣa groups and Rākṣasas, O lord of men.
चतुष्पदानि सत्त्वानि तथा गावस्तु सौरभाः सुपर्णान्पक्षिणश्चैव विनता च व्यजायत
Four-footed creatures, and cows of fragrant breed; Suparṇas and birds, and Vinatā gave birth to them.
महीधरान्सर्वनागान् देवी कद्रूर्व्यजायत एवं वृद्धिं समगमन् विश्वे लोकाः परंतप
The goddess Kadrū gave birth to all mountains and serpents; thus, all worlds attained growth, O scorcher of foes.
तदा वै पौष्करो राजन् प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनः प्रादुर्भावः पौष्करस्ते मया द्वैपायनेरितः
Then, O king, the manifestation of Pauṣkara, the great-souled, occurred; the manifestation of Pauṣkara has been declared to you by me, Dvaipāyana.
पुराणः पुरुषश्चैव मया विष्णुर्हरिः प्रभुः कथितस्ते ऽनुपूर्वेण संस्तुतः परमर्षिभिः
The ancient person, Viṣṇu, Hari, the lord, has been narrated to you in sequence, praised by the supreme sages.
यश्चेदमग्र्यं शृणुयात् पुराणं सदा नरः पर्वसु गौरवेण अवाप्य लोकान्स हि वीतरागः परत्र च स्वर्गफलानि भुङ्क्ते
Whoever always listens to this foremost Purāṇa with reverence at sacred times, attains worlds, being free from passion, and enjoys heavenly rewards hereafter.
चक्षुषा मनसा वाचा कर्मणा च चतुर्विधम् प्रसादयति यः कृष्णं तं कृष्णो ऽनुप्रसीदति
He who pleases Kṛṣṇa with the fourfold means—by sight, mind, speech, and action—Kṛṣṇa becomes pleased with him.
राजा च लभते राज्यम् अधनश्चोत्तमं धनम् क्षीणायुर्लभते चायुः पुत्रकामः सुतं तथा
The king attains sovereignty, the poor gains excellent wealth, one of diminished lifespan obtains longevity, and one desiring sons gets a son.
यज्ञा वेदास्तथा कामास् तपांसि विविधानि च प्राप्नोति विविधं पुण्यं विष्णुभक्तो धनानि च
Sacrifices, Vedas, desires, and various austerities are attained; the devotee of Viṣṇu obtains various merits and wealth.
यद्यत्कामयते किंचित् तत्तल्लोकेश्वराद् भवेत् सर्वं विहाय य इमं पठेत्पौष्करकं हरेः
Whatever one desires, that may be obtained from the Lord of the world by the one who recites this Pauṣkaraka of Hari, abandoning all else.
प्रादुर्भावं नृपश्रेष्ठ न तस्य ह्यशुभं भवेत् एष पौष्करको नाम प्रादुर्भावो महात्मनः कीर्तितस्ते महाभाग व्यासश्रुतिनिदर्शनात्
O best of kings, for him there is no misfortune; this manifestation called Pauṣkaraka of the great-souled one has been proclaimed to you, O most fortunate, as heard from Vyāsa.
विष्णुत्वं शृणु विष्णोश्च हरित्वं च कृते युगे वैकुण्ठत्वं च देवेषु कृष्णत्वं मानुषेषु च
Hear of Viṣṇu’s divinity, and of his form as Hari in the Kṛta Yuga, as Vaikuṇṭha among the gods, and as Kṛṣṇa among men.
ईश्वरस्य हि तस्यैषा कर्मणां गहना गतिः संप्रत्यतीतान्भव्यांश्च शृणु राजन्यथातथम्
For that Lord, the course of actions is indeed profound; now listen, O king, to what has passed, what is, and what is to come, just as it is.
अव्यक्तो व्यक्तलिङ्गस्थो य एष भगवान्प्रभुः नारायणो ह्यनन्तात्मा प्रभवो ऽव्यय एव च
He who is unmanifest, yet abides in manifest form, that blessed Lord, Nārāyaṇa, of infinite essence, is the source and is indeed imperishable.
एष नारायणो भूत्वा हरिरासीत्सनातनः ब्रह्मा वायुश्च सोमश्च धर्मः शक्रो बृहस्पतिः
This Nārāyaṇa, becoming Hari, is the eternal one; he is Brahmā, Vāyu, Soma, Dharma, Śakra, and Bṛhaspati.
अदितेरपि पुत्रत्वम् एव याति युगे युगे एष विष्णुरिति ख्यात इन्द्रस्यावरजो विभुः
He also takes birth as the son of Aditi in every age; this Viṣṇu is known as the mighty younger brother of Indra.
प्रसादजं ह्यस्य विभोर् अदित्याः पुत्रकारणम् वधार्थं सुरशत्रूणां दैत्यदानवरक्षसाम्
Born from the favor of the mighty one, for the sake of becoming Aditi’s son, it is for the destruction of the enemies of the gods—the Daityas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas.
प्रधानात्मा पुरा ह्येष ब्रह्माणमसृजत्प्रभुः सो ऽसृजत्पूर्वपुरुषः पुराकल्पे प्रजापतीन्
He, the Lord, whose essence is the primordial, formerly created Brahmā; that first being then created the progenitors in the previous cycle.
असृजन्मानवांस्तत्र ब्रह्मवंशाननुत्तमान् तेभ्यो ऽभवन्महात्मभ्यो बहुधा ब्रह्म शाश्वतम्
There he created the Manus, the supreme lineages of Brahmā; from those great souls, Brahman, eternal, arose in many forms.
एतदाश्चर्यभूतस्य विष्णोः कर्मानुकीर्तनम् कीर्तनीयस्य लोकेषु कीर्त्यमानं निबोध मे
Now hear from me the recounting of the wondrous deeds of Viṣṇu, which are to be celebrated among people, and are being praised.
वृते वृत्रवधे तत्र वर्तमाने कृते युगे आसीत्त्रैलोक्यविख्यातः सङ्ग्रामस्तारकामयः
When the slaying of Vṛtra was accomplished, in that Kṛta Yuga, there was a battle called Tārakāmaya, renowned throughout the three worlds.
