स गर्जित्वा यथान्यायं विक्रम्य च यथासुखम् तत्सैन्यम् उत्सारितवांस् तृणाग्राणीव मारुतः
He roared as was fitting, advanced as he pleased, and scattered that army as the wind scatters blades of grass.
ततो ऽश्मवर्षं दैत्येन्द्रा व्यमृजन्त नभोगताः नगमात्रैः शिलाखण्डैर् गिरिशृङ्गैर्महाप्रभैः
Then, the Daitya chiefs, moving through the sky, unleashed a rain of stones, with fragments of rocks and mighty mountain peaks.
तदश्मवर्षं सिंहस्य महन्मूर्धनि पातितम् दिशो दश विकीर्णा वै खद्योतप्रकरा इव
That rain of stones fell upon the lion's great head, scattering in all ten directions like swarms of fireflies.
तदाश्मौघैर् दैत्यगणाः पुनः सिंहमरिंदमम् छादयांचक्रिरे मेघा धाराभिरिव पर्वतम्
Then, with torrents of stones, the hosts of Daityas covered the lion, the enemy of foes, as clouds cover a mountain with streams.
न च तं चालयामासुर् दैत्यौघा देवसत्तमम् भीमवेगो ऽचलश्रेष्ठं समुद्र इव मन्दरम्
Yet, those masses of Daityas could not move that best of gods, whose force was terrible, like the ocean cannot move the greatest mountain.
ततो ऽश्मवर्षे विहते जलवर्षमनन्तरम् धाराभिरक्षमात्राभिः प्रादुरासीत्समन्ततः
Then, when the stone-rain was thwarted, a rain of water followed, with streams from clouds appearing everywhere.
नभसः प्रच्युता धारास् तिग्मवेगाः समन्ततः आवृत्य सर्वतो व्योम दिशश्चोपदिशस्तथा
Streams, falling from the sky with sharp speed, covered all the heavens and every direction and subdirection.
धारा दिवि च सर्वत्र वसुधायां च सर्वशः न स्पृशन्ति च ता देवं निपतन्त्यो ऽनिशं भुवि

हते ऽश्मवर्षे तुमुले जलवर्षे च शोषिते सो ऽसृजद्दानवो मायाम् अग्निवायुसमीरिताम्
When the fierce rain of stones was destroyed and the rain of water dried up, that demon released an illusion driven by fire and wind.
महेन्द्रस्तोयदैः सार्धं सहस्राक्षो महाद्युतिः महता तोयवर्षेण शमयामास पावकम्
The mighty Indra, thousand-eyed and radiant, together with the cloud-givers, subdued the fire with a great downpour of water.
तस्यां प्रतिहतायां तु मायायां युधि दानवः असृजद्घोरसंकाशं तमस्तीव्रं समन्ततः
When that illusion was countered in battle, the demon unleashed a terrifying, intense darkness in all directions.
तमसा संवृते लोके दैत्येष्वात्तायुधेषु च स्वतेजसा परिवृतो दिवाकर इवाबभौ
With the world covered in darkness and the demons armed for battle, he shone, surrounded by his own brilliance, like the sun.
त्रिशिखां भ्रुकुटीं चास्य ददृशुर्दानवा रणे ललाटस्थां त्रिशूलाङ्कां गङ्गां त्रिपथगामिव
In battle, the demons saw upon his forehead a triple flame and a furrowed brow, marked with a trident, like the triple-flowing Ganga.
ततः सर्वासु मायासु हतासु दितिनन्दनाः हिरण्यकशिपुं दैत्यं विवर्णाः शरणं ययुः
Then, with all their illusions destroyed, the sons of Diti, pale, sought refuge with the demon Hiranyakashipu.
ततः प्रज्वलितः क्रोधात् प्रदहन्निव तेजसा तस्मिन्क्रुद्धे तु दैत्येन्द्रे तमोभूतमभूज्जगत्
Then, blazing with anger, burning as if with his radiance, when that lord of demons was enraged, the world became shrouded in darkness.
आवहः प्रवहश्चैव विवहो ऽथ ह्युदावहः परावहः संवहश्च महाबलपराक्रमाः
Āvaha, Pravaha, Vivaha, Udāvaha, Parāvaha, and Saṃvaha—these, mighty and powerful, arose.
तथा परिवहः श्रीमान् उत्पातभयशंसिनः इत्येवं क्षुभिताः सप्त मरुतो गगनेचराः
Likewise, Parivaha, glorious and foretelling disaster, thus the seven Maruts, agitated, moved through the sky.
ये ग्रहाः सर्वलोकस्य क्षये प्रादुर्भवन्ति वै ते सर्वे गगने दृष्टा व्यचरन्त यथासुखम्

At an untimely season, all the trees blossomed and bore fruit, and all the vines were laden with fruit—these are said to be signs of the destruction of the Daityas.
फलैः फलान्यजायन्त पुष्पैः पुष्पं तथैव च उन्मीलन्ति निमीलन्ति हसन्ति च रुदन्ति च
From fruits, other fruits were produced, and likewise from flowers, more flowers; they opened and closed, laughed and wept.
