सर्वं त्रिभुवनं राजंल् लोकधर्माश्च शाश्वताः दृश्यन्ते नारसिंहे ऽस्मिंस् तथेदमखिलं जगत्
All three worlds, O king, and the eternal laws of the realms, are seen within this Narasimha, as is the entire universe.
प्रजापतिश्चात्र मनुर् महात्मा ग्रहाश्च योगाश्च महीरुहाश्च उत्पातकालश्च धृतिर्मतिश्च रतिश्च सत्यं च तपो दमश्च
Here are Prajapati, the great-souled Manu, the planets, yogic powers, trees, the time of calamity, steadfastness, intelligence, pleasure, truth, austerity, and self-restraint.
सनत्कुमारश्च महानुभावो विश्वे च देवा ऋषयश्च सर्वे क्रोधश्च कामश्च तथैव हर्षो धर्मश्च मोहः पितरश्च सर्वे
Sanatkumara of great renown, all the gods, all the sages, wrath, desire, joy, righteousness, delusion, and all the ancestors are here.
प्रह्लादस्य वचः श्रुत्वा हिरण्यकशिपुः प्रभुः उवाच दानवान्सर्वान् गणांश्च स गणाधिपः
Hearing Prahlada's words, Hiranyakashipu, the lord, spoke to all the Danavas and their leaders.
मृगेन्द्रो गृह्यतामेष अपूर्वां तनुमास्थितः यदि वा संशयः कश्चिद् वध्यतां वनगोचरः
Let this lion be seized, possessing an unprecedented form. If there is any doubt, let him be slain, for he roams the forest.
ते दानवगणा सर्वे मृगेन्द्रं भीमविक्रमम् परिक्षिपन्तो मुदितास् त्रासयामासुरोजसा
All the hosts of Danavas, joyful, surrounded the lion of terrible prowess and sought to frighten him with their strength.
सिंहनादं विमुच्याथ नरसिंहो महाबलः बभञ्ज तां सभां दिव्यां व्यादितास्य इवान्तकः
Then Narasimha, of immense power, released a lion's roar and shattered that divine assembly, his mouth wide like Death.
सभायां भज्यमानायां हिरण्यकशिपुः स्वयम् चिक्षेपास्त्राणि सिंहस्य रोषाद्व्याकुललोचनः
As the assembly was being destroyed, Hiranyakashipu himself hurled weapons at the lion, his eyes wild with anger.
सर्वास्त्राणामथ ज्येष्ठं दण्डमन्त्रं सुदारुणम् कालचक्रं तथाघोरं विष्णुचक्रं तथा परम्
He then used all weapons, the foremost being the dreadful staff-mantra, the fierce time-wheel, and the supreme Vishnu-disc.
पैतामहं तथात्युग्रं त्रैलोक्यदहनं महत् विचित्रामशनीं चैव शुष्कार्द्रं चाशनिद्वयम्
He used the extremely fierce weapon of the grandsire, the great fire that burns the three worlds, and the wondrous thunderbolt, both dry and wet.
रौद्रं तथोग्रं शूलं च कङ्कालं मुसलं तथा मोहनं शोषणं चैव संतापनविलापनम्
He used the fierce and terrible trident, the skeleton, the mace, the bewildering, the drying, the burning, and the lamentation weapons.
वायव्यं मथनं चैव कापालमथ कैङ्करम् तथाप्रतिहतां शक्तिं क्रौञ्चमस्त्रं तथैव च
He used the wind weapon, the churning weapon, the skull weapon, the servitor weapon, the irresistible spear, and the Krauncha weapon as well.
अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरश्चैव सोमास्त्रं शिशिरं तथा कम्पनं शातनं चैव त्वाष्ट्रं चैव सुभैरवम्
The Brahmashiras missile, the Soma missile, the Shishira missile, the Kampana and Shatana missiles, and also the Tvastra and Subhairava missiles—
कालमुद्गरमक्षोभ्यं तपनं च महाबलम् संवर्तनं मोहनं च तथा मायाधरं परम्
The Kaalamudgara, the unshakable Akshobhya, the mighty Tapana, the Samvartana and Mohana, and likewise the supreme Maya-dhara—
गान्धर्वमस्त्रं दयितम् असिरत्नं च नन्दकम् प्रस्वापनं प्रमथनं वारुणं चास्त्रमुत्तमम् अस्त्रं पाशुपतं चैव यस्याप्रतिहता गतिः
The Gandharva missile, the beloved Asiratna, the Nandaka, the Prasvapana, the Pramathana, the excellent Varuna missile, and the Pashupata missile, whose course none can withstand—
अस्त्रं हयशिरश्चैव ब्राह्ममस्त्रं तथैव च नारायणास्त्रमैन्द्रं च सार्पमस्त्रं तथाद्भुतम्
The Hayashiras missile, the Brahma missile, the Narayana missile, the Indra missile, and the wondrous Serpent missile—
पैशाचमस्त्रमजितं शोषदं शामनं तथा महाबलं भावनं च प्रस्थापनविकम्पने
The invincible Paishacha missile, the Shoshana, the Shamana, the mighty Bhavana, and the Prasthapana and Vikampana—
एतान्यस्त्राणि दिव्यानि हिरण्यकशिपुस्तदा असृजन्नरसिंहस्य दीप्तस्याग्नेरिवाहुतिम्
All these divine missiles, at that time, Hiranyakashipu released against Narasimha, blazing like offerings cast into a shining fire.
अस्त्रैः प्रज्वलितैः सिंहम् आवृणोदसुरोत्तमः विवस्वान् घर्मसमये हिमवन्तमिवांशुभिः
With these blazing missiles, the foremost of asuras enveloped the lion, like the sun with its rays envelops Himavat in the heat of summer.
स ह्यमर्षानिलोद्भूतो दैत्यानां सैन्यसागरः क्षणेन प्लावयामास मैनाकमिव सागरः
Then, the ocean of the daityas' army, stirred by the wind of wrath, in a moment flooded forth, like the sea overwhelming Mount Mainaka.
प्रासैः पाशैश्च खड्गैश्च गदाभिर्मुसलैस्तथा वज्रैरशनिभिश्चैव साग्निभिश्च महाद्रुमैः
With spears, nooses, swords, maces, pestles, thunderbolts, whips, flaming logs, and great trees—
मुद्गरैर्भिन्दिपालैश्च शिलोलूखलपर्वतैः शतघ्नीभिश्च दीप्ताभिर् दण्डैरपि सुदारुणैः
With mallets, sling-stones, boulders, mortars, mountain peaks, blazing shataghnis, and dreadful clubs—
ते दानवाः पाशगृहीतहस्ता महेन्द्रतुल्याशनिवज्रवेगाः समन्ततो ऽभ्युद्यतबाहुकायाः स्थितास्त्रिशीर्षा इव नागपाशाः
Those danavas, grasping nooses in hand, with the speed of Indra's thunderbolt, stood all around with arms upraised, like triple-headed naga-nooses.
सुवर्णमालाकुलभूषिताङ्गाः पीतांशुकाभोगविभाविताङ्गाः मुक्तावलीदामसनाथकक्षा हंसा इवाभान्ति विशालपक्षाः
Their bodies adorned with golden garlands, their forms radiant in yellow garments, their waists encircled with pearl necklaces—they shone like swans with broad wings.
तेषां तु वायुप्रतिमौजसां वै केयूरमौलीवलयोत्कटानाम् तान्युत्तमाङ्गान्यभितो विभान्ति प्रभातसूर्यांशुसमप्रभाणि
Among them, those of wind-like energy, with splendid armlets, crowns, and bracelets, their heads all around shone with a brilliance equal to the rays of the rising sun.
खराः खरमुखाश्चैव मकराशीविषाननाः ईहामृगमुखाश्चान्ये वराहमुखसंस्थिताः
Some had the faces of donkeys, others of crocodiles and venomous serpents; some had the faces of antelopes, and others bore the visage of a boar.
बालसूर्यमुखाश्चान्ये धूमकेतुमुखास्तथा अर्धचन्द्रार्धवक्त्राश्च अग्निदीप्तमुखास्तथा
Some had faces like the rising sun, others like comets; some had half-moon, half-formed faces, and others faces blazing like fire.
हंसकुक्कुटवक्त्राश्च व्यादितास्या भयावहाः सिंहास्या लेलिहानाश्च काकगृध्रमुखास्तथा
Some had the faces of swans and cocks, their mouths wide open and terrifying; some had lion faces, licking their lips, and others had the faces of crows and vultures.
द्विजिह्वका वक्रशीर्षास् तथोल्कामुखसंस्थिताः महाग्राहमुखाश्चान्ये दानवा बलदर्पिताः
Some had two tongues, crooked heads, and faces like meteors; others, mighty danavas, had the faces of great sharks, proud in their strength.
शैलसंवर्ष्मणस् तस्य शरीरे शरवृष्टिभिः अवध्यस्य मृगेन्द्रस्य न व्यथां चक्रुराहवे
Though their bodies were as massive as mountains, and they rained down arrows upon the lion, that unconquerable king of beasts felt no distress in the battle.
