He asked, "Your disposition is truly genuine, O daughter of the mountain, not artificial, for you have come here, knowing my heart, O fair-complexioned one."
"Thinking the three worlds empty without you, you have arrived with a cheerful face; such conduct is fitting for you."
Thus addressed, the lord of the Dānavas then spoke with a slight smile, yet he did not perceive the true identity—mostly, of the slayer of Tripura.
I went to perform austerities, seeking your incomparable favor, but there I found no delight; therefore, I have come to you.
Hearing this, Śaṅkara became somewhat suspicious; fixing his mind, the god, with a smiling face, considered carefully.
She is angry with me, slender-limbed, steadfast by nature, having come unfulfilled in desire—what doubt is there for me in this?
Thinking thus, Hara sought a sign of recognition in her, but did not see the lotus mark on her left side.
Then the god, bearer of the Pināka bow, saw a whorl of hair fashioned there, and realized the Dānava's illusion, concealing his own form.
Taking up the thunderbolt weapon at his loins, he struck down that Dānava; yet Vīraka did not realize that the lord of the Dānavas had been slain.
Seeing the Dānava lord slain by Hari in a woman's form, and not understanding the true meaning, he reported it to the daughter of the mountain.
Hearing from the wind-mouthed messenger, the goddess of the mountain, her eyes red with anger, cursed her son Vīraka, her heart pierced with pain.
Because you abandoned your mother, overwhelmed with affection, and enabled women to approach Śaṅkara in secret union—
Therefore, your mother, O Gaṇeśa, will become harsh, rough, dull, and devoid of heart—like alkali, like stone.
This is the well-known cause for Vīraka's transformation into stone; thus, in due course, he became the subject of wondrous tales.
Thus, as soon as the curse was uttered by the daughter of the mountain, from her mouth emerged wrath in the form of a lion, mighty in strength.
That lion, with a terrifying face, matted locks upon his neck, tail raised and hanging, with dreadful jaws and protruding fangs—
With mouth agape, lolling tongue, gaunt belly, and devouring flames, the goddess Sati then resolved to subdue him quickly.
Knowing her intention, the blessed Four-faced One came to the hermitage, the abode of prosperity, and, arriving, the lord of gods spoke clearly to Girijā.
Daughter, what do you wish to obtain? What is unattainable that I might give you? Cease this excessive austerity by my command.
Hearing this, Girijā replied with words filled with the weight of her teacher's instruction, expressing in speech her long-cherished and well-defined desire.
Through arduous austerity, I obtained Śaṃkara as my husband; yet he often called me 'dark-complexioned.'
May I be golden in form, united with my beloved, and equal in every limb to the Lord of beings, my husband.
Hearing her words, the lotus-seated one said: 'So be it; and furthermore, you shall bear half your husband's body.'
Then she cast off her bee-dark form, the hue of a blooming blue lotus.
With radiant skin, holding a bell in her hand, three-eyed, her limbs adorned with various ornaments, she wore yellow silk.
Then Brahmā spoke to the goddess, whose radiance was like a blue lotus: 'By my command, you have come into being at night from contact with the mountain's dust.'
'Having accomplished your purpose, you are now a unique portion; long ago, this lion arose from the goddess's wrath, O beautiful-faced one.'
'Let him be your mount, O goddess, and let him be mighty in battle. Go to Mount Vindhya; there you will perform the work of the gods.'
'This Yakṣa named Pañcāla, follower of the Yakṣa king, is given to you as an attendant by me, endowed with hundreds of magical powers.'
Thus addressed, the goddess Kauśikī went to Mount Vindhya; and Umā, her wish fulfilled, went to the Lord of the Mountain.
