He should give cows, land, gold, garments, fine bedding, and whatever is desired by the Brahmins, for himself and for his father.
Free from miserliness, he should bring satisfaction to the ancestors; then, he should offer water for the Visvedevas, reciting the svadhā invocation.
Having given, the wise person should accept blessings from the Brahmins, facing east; he should say, 'May the ancestors be gentle,' and the Brahmins should repeat it.
When the Brahmins say, 'May our lineage increase,' he should respond, 'May the donors prosper,' thus speaking in turn.
When the Brahmins say, 'May these true blessings be,' he should then recite the svasti invocation, and, with devotion, remove the rice balls.
He should wait with the remnants until the Brahmins depart; then he should perform the offering to the household deities, as prescribed by dharma.
The remnants placed on the ground are considered the ancestral share for those who are upright, believing, and for the servant class.
This ancestral nourishment was established by the ancestors long ago, for those with or without sons, and even for women, O king.
Then, standing before them, he should take the water vessel, recite 'vāje vāja,' and dismiss them with the tip of the kusa grass.
He should circumambulate outside, taking eight steps, accompanied by his relatives, sons, and wives.
Returning, he should bow and sprinkle the fire with mantras, perform the Vaiśvadeva rite, and make the daily offering.
After the Vaiśvadeva rite, together with servants, sons, and relatives, he should eat, along with guests, all that was offered to the ancestors.
Even one who is not initiated may perform this universal śrāddha on all festival days; it grants fulfillment of all desires.
Even without a wife, even while abroad, the devoted wise man, or even a Śūdra, may perform this rite without mantras, following this procedure.
The third is called the prosperity Śrāddha, performed on occasions of celebration and joy, such as festivals, weddings, and auspicious rituals.
First, the mothers are to be honored, then the fathers; after them, O King, the maternal grandfathers, and likewise all the gods.
With circumambulation and offerings of curd, unbroken rice, fruits, and water, facing east, one should offer the balls of food, mixed with sacred grass and dūrvā.
When the prosperity rite is complete, one should offer arghya to each pair; pairs of twice-born are to be honored with garments, gold, and the like.
The sesame offering should be performed with barley, accompanied by the recitation of the Nandī verses in order; all auspicious rites should be recited by eminent Brāhmaṇas.
Thus, even a Śūdra, at a general prosperity Śrāddha, should always perform the rite with reverence, using the mantra, and with humility.
The venerable Lord has said that the Śūdra should be devoted to giving, for by giving, all desires are fulfilled for him.
Now I will explain the ekoddiṣṭa rite, as spoken by the discus-bearing Lord: what should be done by sons for the deceased, and the impurity observed for the father.
For Brāhmaṇas, the period of impurity for a corpse is ten days; for Kṣatriyas, it is twelve days; for Vaiśyas, a fortnight.
For Śūdras, the impurity among sapiṇḍas lasts a month; for one whose hair-cutting has not been performed, it is said to be three nights.
The same applies at birth, for all castes at all times; after collecting the bones, touching the body is prescribed.
For the departed, the offering of the funeral ball should be performed for twelve days; this is called his provision for the journey, as it brings him great satisfaction.
Therefore, the departed is not taken to the city of the dead for twelve days; he observes his home, son, and wife for those twelve days.
Therefore, milk should be placed in the open air for ten nights, always for the appeasement of the funeral fire and to remove the fatigue of the journey.
Then, on the eleventh day, eleven Brāhmaṇas, or Kṣatriyas and others at the end of impurity, should be fed by one who is not in mourning.
On the second day, again, the ekoddiṣṭa rite should be performed in the same way, with the summoning of fire, but without the divine portion, as prescribed.
