नर्मवादी भविष्यामि जहि कोपं शुचिस्मिते शिरसा प्रणतश्चाहं रचितस्ते मयाञ्जलिः
I will speak playfully; dispel your anger, O one with a pure smile. With my head bowed, I have offered you this reverent salutation.
स्नेहेनाप्यवमानेन निन्दितेनैति विक्रियाम् तस्मान्न जातु रुष्टस्य नर्मस्पृष्टो जनः किल
Even affection, disrespect, or reproach causes disturbance; therefore, it is said that one touched by jest should never be angry.
अनेकैश्चाटुभिर्देवी देवेन प्रतिबोधिता कोपं तीव्रं न तत्याज सती मर्मणि घट्टिता
Though the goddess was addressed by the god with many gentle words, Sati, deeply hurt, did not abandon her intense anger.
अवष्टब्धम् अथास्फाल्य वासः शंकरपाणिना विपर्यस्तालका वेगाद् यातुमैच्छत शैलजा
Then, her garment seized by Śaṅkara’s hand, her hair disheveled, the daughter of the mountain, in haste, wished to depart.
तस्या व्रजन्त्याः कोपेन पुनराह पुरान्तकः सत्यं सर्वैरवयवैः सुतासि सदृशी पितुः
As she was leaving in anger, the destroyer of cities spoke again: 'Truly, in every way, O daughter, you are like your father.'
हिमाचलस्य शृङ्गैस्तैर् मेघजालाकुलैर्नभः तथा दुरवगाह्येभ्यो हृदयेभ्यस्तवाशयः
Just as the sky is obscured by the peaks of Himālaya, thick with clusters of clouds, so too your heart is difficult to fathom.
काठिन्याङ्कस्त्वमस्मभ्यं वनेभ्यो बहुधा गता कुटिलत्वं च वर्त्मभ्यो दुःसेव्यत्वं हिमादपि संक्रान्तिं सर्वदैवेति तन्वङ्गि हिमशैलराट्
From the forests you have gained hardness, from the paths crookedness, from the snow difficulty in approach, and from the king of mountains, O slender one, you have always taken on coldness.
इत्युक्ता सा पुनः प्राह गिरिशं शैलजा तदा कोपकम्पितमूर्धा च प्रस्फुरद्दशनच्छदा
Thus addressed, the daughter of the mountain replied to Śiva, her head trembling with anger and her teeth tightly clenched.
मा सर्वान्दोषदानेन निन्दान्यान्गुणिनो जनान् तवापि दुष्टसंपर्कात् संक्रान्तं सर्वमेव हि
Do not reproach all the virtuous by attributing every fault to them; indeed, all your defects have arisen from your own wicked associations.
व्यालेभ्यो ऽनेकजिह्वत्वं भस्मना स्नेहबन्धनम् हृत्कालुष्यं शशाङ्कात्तु दुर्बोधित्वं वृषादपि
From serpents you have gained many tongues, from ashes your bonds of affection, from the moon impurity of heart, and from the bull, incomprehensibility.
तथा बहु किमुक्तेन अलं वाचा श्रमेण ते श्मशानवासान् निर्भीस् त्वं नग्नत्वान्न तव त्रपा निर्घृणत्वं कपालित्वाद् दया ते विगता चिरम्
Why say more? Enough of your tiresome words. You dwell in cremation grounds without fear, you are naked and feel no shame, you bear a skull and have long been devoid of compassion.
इत्युक्त्वा मन्दिरात्तस्मान् निर्जगाम हिमाद्रिजा
Having spoken thus, the daughter of Himālaya departed from the temple.
तस्यां व्रजन्त्यां देवेशगणैः किलकिलो ध्वनिः क्व मातर्गच्छसि त्यक्त्वा रुदन्तो धाविताः पुनः
As she was leaving, the hosts of the lord of the gods cried out in lamentation, 'Mother, where are you going, leaving us?' and, weeping, they ran after her.
विष्टभ्य चरणौ देव्या वीरको बाष्पगद्गदम् प्रोवाच मातः किंत्वेतत् क्व यासि कुपितान्तरा
Planting himself at the goddess’s feet, Vīraka, his voice choked with tears, said: 'Mother, what is this? Where are you going, filled with anger?'
अहं त्वामनुयास्यामि व्रजन्तीं स्नेहवर्जिताम् नो चेत्पतिष्ये शिखरात् तपोनिष्ठे त्वयोज्झितः
'I will follow you as you go, though you are without affection; otherwise, I will cast myself from the peak, abandoned by you, devoted to austerities.'
उन्नाम्य वदनं देवी दक्षिणेन तु पाणिना उवाच वीरकं माता शोकं पुत्रक मा कृथाः
Lifting her face with her right hand, the goddess spoke to Vīraka: 'Do not grieve, my child.'
शैलाग्रात्पतितुं नैव न चागन्तुं मया सह युक्तं ते पुत्र वक्ष्यामि येन कार्येण तच्छृणु
It is not proper for you, my son, either to fall from the mountain peak or to come with me. I will tell you the reason; listen to it.
कृष्णेत्युक्त्वा हरेणाहं निन्दिता चाप्यनिन्दिता सार्हं तपः करिष्यामि येन गौरीत्वमाप्नुयाम्
Because I was called 'Kṛṣṇā' by Hari, I have been both reproached and not reproached. Therefore, I shall undertake such austerity as will grant me the state of Gaurī.
एष स्त्रीलम्पटो देवो यातायां मय्यनन्तरम् द्वाररक्षा त्वया कार्या नित्यं रन्ध्रान्ववेक्षिणा
This god is infatuated with women; after I depart, you must always guard the entrance, being ever watchful for any breach.
यथा न काचित् प्रविशेद् योषिदत्र हरान्तिकम् दृष्ट्वा परांस्त्रियं चात्र वदेथा मम पुत्रक
So that no woman may enter here to approach Hara, if you see another woman here, you must inform me, my son.
शीघ्रम् एव करिष्यामि यथायुक्तम् अनन्तरम् एवमस्त्विति देवीं स वीरकः प्राह सांप्रतम्
I will promptly do what is appropriate next. Thus, saying 'so be it,' the boy addressed the goddess at that moment.
मातुराज्ञामृताह्लादप्लाविताङ्गो गतज्वरः जगाम कक्षां संद्रष्टुं प्रणिपत्य च मातरम्
Flooded with the nectar of his mother's joyful command, his fever gone, he went to the grove to see her, bowing to his mother.
देवीं सापश्यद् आयान्तीं सखीं मातुर्विभूषिताम् कुसुममोदिनीं नाम तस्य शैलस्य देवताम्
He saw the goddess approaching, his mother's companion, adorned and named Kusumamodinī, the deity of that mountain.
सापि दृष्ट्वा गिरिसुतां स्नेहविक्लवमानसा क्व पुत्रि गच्छसीत्युच्चैर् आलिङ्ग्योवाच देवता
Seeing the mountain's daughter, her heart overwhelmed with affection, the goddess embraced her and loudly said, 'Where are you going, daughter?'
सा चास्यै सर्वमाचख्यौ शंकरात्कोपकारणम् पुनश्चोवाच गिरिजा देवतां मातृसंमताम्
She told her everything—the reason for her anger at Śaṃkara—and again Girijā spoke to the goddess, approved by her mother.
नित्यं शैलाधिराजस्य देवता त्वमनिन्दिते सर्वतः संनिधानं ते मम चातीव वत्सला
O blameless one, you are always the goddess of the mountain king, and you are exceedingly dear to me in every way.
अतस्तुते प्रवक्ष्यामि यद्विधेयं तदा धिया अन्यस्त्रीसंप्रवेशस्तु त्वया रक्ष्यः प्रयत्नतः
Therefore, I will tell you what must be done with care; you must diligently guard against the entry of any other woman.
रहस्यत्र प्रयत्नेन चेतसा सततं गिरौ पिनाकिनः प्रविष्टायां वक्तव्यं मे त्वयानघे
If, while I am engaged in secret austerity on the mountain, someone enters the abode of Pinākin, you must inform me at once, O sinless one.
ततो ऽहं संविधास्यामि यत्कृत्यं तदनन्तरम् इत्युक्ता सा तथेत्युक्त्वा जगाम स्वगिरिं शुभम्
Then I will arrange whatever needs to be done next. Thus addressed, she replied 'so be it' and went to her own auspicious mountain.
उमापि पितुरुद्यानं जगामाद्रिसुता द्रुतम् अन्तरिक्षं समाविश्य मेघमालामिव प्रभा
And Umā, the mountain's daughter, swiftly entered her father's garden, her radiance like a garland of clouds filling the sky.
