महेन्द्रप्रमुखाः सर्वे सुरा दृष्ट्वा तदद्भुतम् नेत्राणि सफलान्यद्य मनोभिरिति ते दधुः
All the gods, led by Mahendra, seeing that wonder, said, 'Today our eyes are fulfilled by what our minds desired.'
विमर्दक्षीणकेयूरा हरिणा द्वारि रोधिताः कथंचित्प्रमुखास्तत्र विविशुर्नाकवासिनः
Their armlets loosened by the crowd, blocked at the door by the deer, somehow the foremost among the dwellers of heaven entered there.
प्रणतेनाचलेन्द्रेण पूजितो ऽथ चतुर्मुखः चकार विधिना सर्वं विधिमन्त्रपुरःसरम्
Then, worshipped by the lord of the mountain, the four-faced one performed everything according to the prescribed rites, with mantras leading the way.
शर्वस्य पाणिग्रहणम् अग्निसाक्षिकमक्षतम् दाता महीभृतां नाथो होता देवश्चतुर्मुखः
The hand-taking of Sharva, witnessed by Agni and unbroken, the giver was the lord of the earth, and the officiant was the four-faced god.
वरः पशुपतिः साक्षात् कन्या विश्वारणिस्तथा चराचराणि भूतानि सुरासुरवराणि च
The groom was Pashupati himself, the bride was Vishvarani; all beings, moving and unmoving, and the best of gods and demons were present.
तत्राप्येते नियमतो ह्य् अभवन्व्यग्रमूर्तयः मुमोचाभिनवान्सर्वान् सस्यशालीन्रसौषधीः
Even there, according to rule, these became busy in form; they released all new grains, rice, and medicinal herbs.
व्यग्रा तु पृथिवी देवी सर्वभावमनोरमा गृहीत्वा वरुणः सर्वरत्नान्याभरणानि च
The goddess Earth, eager and delightful in every aspect, took all gems and ornaments, and Varuna also.
पुण्यानि च पवित्राणि नानारत्नमयानि तु तस्थौ साभरणो देवो हर्षदः सर्वदेहिनाम्
And also the pure and holy ornaments made of various gems; the god stood adorned, giving joy to all embodied beings.
धनदश्चापि दिव्यानि हैमान्याभरणानि च जातरूपविचित्राणि प्रयतः समुपस्थितः
Kubera, too, brought divine golden ornaments, variously fashioned from gold, with devotion, and presented them.
वायुर्ववौ सुसुरभिः सुखसंस्पर्शनो विभुः छत्रमिन्दुकरोद्भासि सुसितं च शतक्रतुः
The mighty wind blew sweetly, pleasant to the touch; Indra, shining like the moon, held a pure white umbrella.
जग्राह मुदितः स्रग्वी बाहुभिर्बहुभूषणैः जगुर्गन्धर्वमुख्याश्च ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
Joyful and adorned with garlands, he took hold with arms decorated by many ornaments; the chief Gandharvas sang, and the groups of Apsarases danced.
वादयन्तो ऽतिमधुरं जगुर् गन्धर्वकिंनराः मूर्ताश्च ऋतवस्तत्र जगुश्च ननृतुश्च वै
Playing exceedingly sweet music, the Gandharvas and Kinnaras sang; the seasons, manifest in form, also sang and danced there.
चपलाश्च गणास्तस्थुर् लोलयन्तो हिमाचलम् उत्तिष्ठन्क्रमशश्चात्र विश्वभुग्भगनेत्रहा
The restless hosts stood, shaking Mount Himāchala; rising and proceeding step by step, the all-consuming, sun-eyed Lord advanced.
चकारौद्वाहिकं कृत्यं पत्न्या सह यथोचितम् दत्तार्घो गिरिराजेन सुरवृन्दैर् विनोदितः
He performed the wedding rites with his wife as prescribed; the mountain king offered the ritual water, entertained by the hosts of gods.
अवसत्तां क्षपां तत्र पत्न्या सह पुरान्तकः ततो गन्धर्वगीतेन नृत्येनाप्सरसामपि
The destroyer of cities spent the night there with his wife; then, accompanied by Gandharva songs and the dances of Apsarases,
स्तुतिभिर् देवदैत्यानां विबुद्धो विबुधाधिपः आमन्त्र्य हिमशैलेन्द्रं प्रभाते चोमया सह जगाम मन्दरगिरिं वायुवेगेन शृङ्गिणा
Awakened by the praises of gods and demons, the lord of the gods, after inviting the king of the snowy mountain, departed at dawn with Umā, traveling to Mount Mandara with the speed of the wind, riding the horned one.
ततो गते भगवति नीललोहिते सहोमया रतिमलभन्न भूधरः सबान्धवो भवति च कस्य नो मनो विह्वलं च जगति हि कन्यकापितुः
After the illustrious blue-red Lord departed with Umā, the mountain and his kin were overcome by longing; for whose mind in the world is not unsettled when a daughter is given away?
ज्वलन्मणिस्फटिकहाटकोत्कटं स्फुटद्युति स्फटिकगोपुरं पुरम् हरो गिरौ चिरमनुकल्पितं तदा विसर्जितामरनिवहो ऽविशत्स्वकम्
The city on the mountain, long prepared by Hara, shone with blazing gems, crystal, and gold, its crystal towers radiant; then, the host of immortals departed, and each entered their own abode.
तदोमासहितो देवो विजहार भगाक्षिहा पुरोद्यानेषु रम्येषु विविक्तेषु वनेषु च
Then, accompanied by Umā, the god whose eye is the sun enjoyed himself in the delightful gardens and secluded forests.
सुरक्तहृदयो देव्या मकराङ्कपुरःसरः ततो बहुतिथे काले सुतकामा गिरेः सुता
His heart deeply attached to the goddess, led by the emblem of the makara, after much time passed, the daughter of the mountain desired a child.
सखीभिः सहिता क्रीडां चक्रे कृत्रिमपुत्रकैः कदाचिद्गन्धतैलेन गात्रमभ्यज्य शैलजा
Together with her companions, she played with artificial children; once, the mountain-born applied fragrant oil to her body.
चूर्णैरुद्वर्तयामास मलिनान्तरितां तनुम् तदुद्वर्तनकं गृह्य नरं चक्रे गजाननम्
She rubbed her body, hidden beneath dirt, with powders; taking that paste, she fashioned a man with the face of an elephant.
पुत्रकं क्रीडती देवी तं चाप्यर्पयदम्भसि जाह्नव्यास्तु शिवासख्यास् ततः सो ऽभूद्बृहद्वपुः
The goddess played with the little son and placed him in the water; by the friendship of Shiva and Jahnavi, he then became vast in form.
कायेनातिविशालेन जगदापूरयत्तदा पुत्रेत्युवाच ते देवी पुत्रेत्यूचे च जाह्नवी
With an exceedingly large body, he then filled the world; the goddess called him 'son,' and Jahnavi also called him 'son.'
गाङ्गेय इति देवैस्तु पूजितो ऽभूद्गजाननः विनायकाधिपत्यं च ददावस्य पितामहः
The gods worshipped the elephant-faced one as 'Gāṅgeya'; the grandfather bestowed upon him the lordship of the Vināyakas.
पुनः सा क्रीडनं चक्रे पुत्रार्थं वरवर्णिनी मनोज्ञमङ्कुरं रूढम् अशोकस्य शुभानना
Again, the splendidly colored goddess played for the sake of a son; the beautiful-faced one nurtured a charming sprout of the Ashoka tree.
वर्धयामास तं चापि कृतसंस्कारमङ्गला बृहस्पतिमुखैर्विप्रैर् दिवस्पतिपुरोगमैः
She raised him, performing the proper rites and auspicious ceremonies, with priests led by Brihaspati and the chief of the gods.
ततो देवैश्च मुनिभिः प्रोक्ता देवी त्विदं वचः भवानि भवती भव्या सम्भूता लोकभूतये
Then, the gods and sages spoke this word to the goddess: 'O Bhavāni, you are Bhavatī, auspicious, born for the benefit of the worlds.'
प्रायः सुतफलो लोकः पुत्रपौत्रैश्च लभ्यते अपुत्राश्च प्रजाः प्रायो दृश्यन्ते दैवहेतवः
Generally, people obtain the fruit of sons through children and grandchildren; yet, those without sons are often seen, due to the workings of fate.
अधुना दर्शिते मार्गे मर्यादां कर्तुमर्हसि फलं किं भविता देवि कल्पितैस्तरुपुत्रकैः इत्युक्ता हर्षपूर्णाङ्गी प्रोवाचोमा शुभां गिरम्
Now that the path has been shown, you should establish the proper order; what fruit will come, O Devi, from trees with imagined offspring? Thus addressed, her body filled with joy, she spoke these auspicious words.
