Kāma, the subduer of lovers' pride, was instantly reduced to ashes; and having incinerated him, the fire born from Hara's eye—
Expanded, eager to burn the world, with a roar of flames; then, for the sake of the world, Bhava restrained the fire.
In the mango tree, in spring, in the moon, in flowers, in bees, in the voices of cuckoos, in various forms, the fire of love—
That arrow of love, pierced within and without by Hari, kindled by passion and affection, rushed within as a fierce, blazing fire.
Unrestrainably swelling, agitating the divided world, it is said to reach the hearts of lovers, saturated with affection.
Day and night it burns, dreadful, incurable in its nature, seeing love reduced to ashes by the flame of Hara's roar.
Rati wailed bitterly together with her cruel husband Madhu; after lamenting greatly, she was consoled by Madhu.
Then, gathering a blossoming mango creeper followed by bees, she went for refuge to the god with the crescent moon and three eyes.
Rati, taking the flowering creeper as a sacred offering in her hand, bound her companion, the bird-charming creeper, to her matted locks adorned with curling tresses.
Sprinkling her body with the pure, pleasing ashes of love, she fell to the ground on her knees and spoke to the one adorned with the moon.

You are the supreme teacher, discerning the ways of all moving and unmoving beings, perceiving the creation of beings; I, seeking refuge, approach you, the moon-crested, the immeasurable beloved of the great.
Grant me again the fulfillment of love and fame, O Lord; let Kāma live again. Without you, beloved of life, who else exists in the worlds?
You alone, O Lord, are the origin of beloveds, the cause of their birth, the arranger of all cycles and meanings; you alone are the master of the world, compassionate, uprooter of devotees' fear.
Thus praised by Manmatha's beloved, Shankara, the praiseworthy Lord, the bull-bannered, the wielder of the crescent, was pleased and, gazing sweetly, spoke to her.
This Kāma will be reborn in due time, and soon become handsome again; in the worlds, he will be renowned as Ananga, the bodiless one.
Thus addressed, Kāma's beloved bowed her head to the Lord of the Mountain and went to a delightful grove, Rati, wife of Himavat.
She wept many times, miserable, in that beautiful place; yet, by the command of Hari, she withdrew from her resolve to die.
Then, prompted by the words of Nārada, the lord of the snowy mountains adorned his daughter, performed festive rites, and auspicious ceremonies.
He placed a heavenly floral crown upon her, dressed her in shining Chinese silk, and, together with arrows, the mountain took his daughter.
With auspicious intent and a heart full, he set out, traversing forests and groves.
He saw a woman weeping, of unfathomable power, whose beauty was unmatched in the world, upon the lovely slopes of the forest.
Moved by curiosity, the mountain approached her, and seeing her weeping, he drew near and questioned her.
