कर्णान्तकृष्टैर्विमलैः सुवर्णरजतोज्ज्वलैः शास्त्रार्थैः संशयप्राप्तान् यथार्थान्वै विकल्पितैः
With arrows drawn to the ear, pure and shining with gold and silver, like meanings of treatises resolved after doubt, he skillfully struck.
ततः शतेन बाणानां शक्रं विव्याध दानवः नारायणं च सप्तत्या नवत्या च हुताशनम्
Then the demon struck Śakra with a hundred arrows, Nārāyaṇa with seventy, and Agni with ninety.

Then, bending his bow, Hari struck the charioteer of the demon king with sharp arrows in the heart; Dhūmaketu struck the banner, Mahendra the crown, Dhanesha the bow adorned with gold, Yama the arm, Vayu the chariot parts, and even the armor of the lord of night-walkers.
दृष्ट्वा तद्युद्धममरैर् अकृत्रिमपराक्रमम् दैत्यनाथः कृतं संख्ये स्वबाहुयुगबान्धवः
Seeing that battle, with its genuine valor, performed by the gods, the demon lord fought in the field with his own arms and kinsmen.
मुमोच मुद्गरं भीमं सहस्राक्षाय संगरे दृष्ट्वा मुद्गरम् आयान्तम् अनिवार्यमथाम्बरे
He hurled a mighty mace at the thousand-eyed one in the conflict; seeing the mace coming, irresistible, in the sky,
रथादाप्लुत्य धरणीम् अगमत्पाकशासनः मुद्गरो ऽपि रथोपस्थे पपात परुषस्वनः
Pākaśāsana leapt from his chariot and reached the ground; the mace fell upon the chariot's seat with a harsh sound.
स रथं चूर्णयामास न ममार च मातलिः गृहीत्वा पट्टिशं दैत्यो जघानोरसि केशवम्
It crushed the chariot, but Mātali did not die; the demon seized a spear and struck Keśava in the chest.
स्कन्धे गरुत्मतः सो ऽपि निषसाद विचेतनः खड्गेन राक्षसेन्द्रस्य निचकर्त च वाहनम्
He collapsed, unconscious, upon Garuda's shoulder; with a sword, he cut down the vehicle of the king of rākṣasas.
यमं च पातयामास भूमौ दैत्यो भुशुण्डिना वह्निं च भिन्दिपालेन ताडयामास मूर्धनि
The demon struck Yama to the ground with a club, and struck Agni on the head with a sling.
वायुं च दोर्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्य पातयामास भूतले धनेशं च धनुष्कोट्या कुट्टयामास कोपनः
He lifted Vayu with his arms and threw him to the earth; in anger, he struck Dhanesha with the tip of his bow.
ततो देवनिकायानाम् एकैकं समरे ततः जघानास्त्रैरसंख्येयैर् दैत्येन्द्रो ऽमितविक्रमः
Then, in battle, the demon king, of boundless valor, slew each of the hosts of gods with countless weapons.
लब्धसंज्ञः क्षणाद्विष्णुश् चक्रं जग्राह दुर्धरम् दानवेन्द्रवसासिक्तं पिशिताशनकोन्मुखम्
Regaining consciousness, Vishnu seized the difficult-to-hold discus, stained with the demon king's blood and turned toward flesh-eaters.
मुमोच दानवेन्द्रस्य दृढं वक्षसि केशवः पपात चक्रं दैत्यस्य हृदये भास्करद्युति
Keśava hurled it firmly at the demon king's chest; the discus, radiant as the sun, fell upon the demon's heart.
व्यशीर्यत ततः काये नीलोत्पलमिवाश्मनि ततो वज्रं महेन्द्रस्तु प्रमुमोचार्चितं चिरम्
Then it shattered upon his body like a blue lotus upon a stone; after that, Mahendra released his long-cherished thunderbolt.
यस्मिञ्जयाशा शक्रस्य दानवेन्द्ररणे त्वभूत् तारकस्य सुसंप्राप्य शरीरं शौर्यशालिनः
In that battle, where Indra's hope of victory rested on the demon king, Tāraka, the valiant, was struck, and his body was attained.
व्यशीर्यत विकीर्णार्चिः शतधा खण्डतां गतम् विनाशमगमन्मुक्तं वायुनासुरवक्षसि
It shattered, its flames scattered, broken into a hundred pieces; released, it met destruction upon the demon's chest by Vayu.
ज्वलितं ज्वलनाभासम् अङ्कुशं कुलिशं यथा विनाशमागतं दृष्ट्वा वायुश्चाङ्कुशमाहवे
The blazing, fire-like goad, like a thunderbolt, was destroyed; seeing the goad's destruction in battle, Vayu also.
रुष्टः शैलेन्द्रमुत्पाट्य पुष्पितद्रुमकन्दरम् चिक्षेप दानवेन्द्राय पञ्चयोजनविस्तृतम्
Angered, he uprooted a mountain, its caves filled with blossoming trees, and hurled it at the lord of the Dānavas, its breadth spanning five yojanas.
महीधरं तम् आयान्तं दैत्यः स्मितमुखस्तदा जग्राह वामहस्तेन बालकन्दुकलीलया
As that mountain approached, the demon, with a smiling face, caught it in his left hand, as if playing with a child's ball.
ततो दण्डं समुद्यम्य कृतान्तः क्रोधमूर्छितः दैत्येन्द्रं मूर्ध्नि चिक्षेप भ्राम्य वेगेन दुर्जयः
Then, Death himself, overcome with wrath, raised his staff and, spinning it with force, hurled it at the demon king's head, invincible in might.
सो ऽसुरस्यापतन्मूर्ध्नि दैत्यस्तं च न बुद्धवान् कल्पान्तदहनालोकाम् अजय्यां ज्वलनस्ततः
That staff struck the demon's head, but the demon was unaware, for it shone with the light of the fire that ends an age, unconquerable, blazing forth.
