Then Śakra, king of the gods, enraged against the Daitya, with concentrated mind, released the Nārāyaṇa weapon at the Asura's chest.
Then that Nārāyaṇa weapon struck the Asura's chest; his heart, pierced by the great weapon, poured forth blood.
The son of the Asura, like a warrior leaving the battlefield, departed; by the power of that weapon, the Daitya's form was destroyed.
Then the Daitya vanished, unperceived in the sky; that lord of Daityas, stationed in the heavens, became invisible to weapons and senses.
He released the supreme cause of destruction upon the armies of the gods: spears, axes, discs, arrows, thunderbolts, and maces.
The fierce demon showered hatchets along with swords, slings, clubs, and missiles—unfailing and inexhaustible.
With those terrifying weapons hurled by the demons at the ranks of the gods, the earth was filled with arms and heads adorned with earrings.
With thighs like elephant trunks, elephants resembling mountains, broken chariots with shattered poles and wheels, together with their charioteers.
The earth became impassable, smeared with flesh and blood, swirling with rivers of gore, and heaps of corpses and bones.

Amidst heaps of headless bodies dancing, garments soaked in blood and mud, at the destruction of all embodied beings in the three worlds, jackals, vultures, and crows rejoiced greatly; sometimes a crow with a plucked eye shrieked over a corpse.
Some jackals dragged fat entrails away; elsewhere, a dreadful heron gnawed at a corpse devoured by dogs; scavenger dogs gathered, feasting on flesh; somewhere, a wolf secretly drank elephant blood.

In one place, a circle of horses was dragged by packs of dogs; elsewhere, goblins with their mates, intoxicated with delight, drank blood and rushed about, exclaiming: 'Let this hoof be mine, my beloved!'

Let this lotus-like hand be my ear ornament! Another, angry, gazes at a body without its beloved, while another, having obtained her beloved, drank warm blood, and bound the corpse's skin with thick foliage.

A yaksha maiden made a tree from a chopped trunk, seized an elephant's tusk as her child, and, splitting a pot, sought a pearl for her beloved's favor; yakshas and rakshasas drank flesh and blood together.

Taking with her hand the juice from a dead horse's mane, she brought the blood-wine of her beloved who had lost his life; 'Let it not go to waste, let it come to me, gone to the cremation ground, this man's face is praiseworthy,' she said.
'This serpent brings us no fear, for he has lost his life; I alone cannot subdue the demon's single face,' thus yaksha women spoke to their beloved; others, holding skulls, were goblins, yakshas, and rakshasas.

They cried, 'Give, give to me, for I am ravenous!' Others, descending into rivers of blood, washed themselves and, having satisfied their ancestors, worshipped the gods with offerings; elephants well stationed crossed the lake of blood.

Thus, in the deep and perilous battle between gods and demons, the proud warriors, overcome by fear and the unconquerable, were shattered.
Then Indra, Kubera, Varuna, Vayu, Agni, Yama, and Nirriti—all mighty—released their divine weapons.
All of them hurled their weapons from the sky against the demons, but those weapons proved ineffective for the gods against the demons.
Even with great fury, they fought together in tumultuous battle, yet the gods, exhausted by the demon, could not discern a way forward.
With all their limbs shattered by the demon's weapons, rendered powerless, they mingled together like cows afflicted by cold.

Seeing their condition, Hari spoke to the gods: 'O Indra, recall the Brahma weapon, for none can withstand it.' Prompted by Vishnu, Indra remembered that mighty weapon.
Always honored, the destroyer of enemies, focused on the arrow for slaying foes, the wise one placed it upon the bow, his mind absorbed in mantra and concentration.
Reciting the mantra, with his mind firmly controlled, aiming to kill the demon, he drew the arrow to his ear, its brilliance undiminished, and released it, his gaze fixed on its path through the sky.
Then the demon, seeing the great weapon deployed, abandoned his illusions and stood in the forest, his face trembling, his strength fading, his body shaken and confused.
Then, empowered by the supreme mantra, Indra's arrow, shaped like a half-moon, entered the great battle, imitating the new sun's disk with its form.

With its dazzling brilliance at the crest, fragrant with many flowers, scattered with smoke and blazing hair, the arrow struck Jambha's head, knocking off his crown and earrings.
When Jambha was slain, the demon leaders turned away; their resolve broken, they went to where Tāraka was.
Seeing them terrified and hearing their report, he grew intensely angry, learning that Jambha, the demon lord, had been killed by the gods in battle.
