By the power of the wind-missile, the masses of clouds were swept away, and the sky became clear, shining like the petals of a blue lotus.
Shaken by that exceedingly fierce wind, the Dānavas could not stand there in battle, even those who were very strong.
Then Jambha became a mountain, ten yojanas wide, to withstand the force of the wind and to remove the fear of the Dānavas.
Flaming with the brilliance of many released weapons and blazing trees, then, when the wind was calmed, the lord of the Daityas stood in mountain form.
Swiftly, the hundred-sacrificed one released a great thunderbolt made of adamant; when that thunderbolt struck the demon in his mountain form,
The caves and waterfalls all around were shattered; then, the mountain illusion of the lord of the Dānavas was dispelled.
Then the lord of the Daityas, filled with fierce arrogance, assumed the form of a terrifying elephant, vast as a great mountain.
He crushed the army of the gods, struck the deities with his tusks, and broke some from behind, seizing them with his trunk.
As he was destroying the forces of the gods, the slayer of Vṛtra released the Nārasiṃha weapon, unconquerable in all three worlds.
From that weapon, by the power of mantra, thousands of lions emerged, with black fangs, roaring laughter, and claws sharp as saws.
Torn apart by those lions, he abandoned the elephant illusion and then became a dreadful serpent, surrounded by a hundred hoods.
With his poisonous breath, the mighty chariot-warrior scorched the army of the gods; then Śakra, of beautiful arms, employed the Garuḍa weapon.
From that Garuḍa weapon, thousands emerged; those Garuḍas attacked Jambha, who had taken the form of a serpent, and the Daitya was cut to pieces, his illusion destroyed.
When his illusion was destroyed, the great Asura Jambha assumed an incomparable form, following the paths of the moon and sun, with mouth wide open, desiring to devour the foremost of the gods.
Then the army of the gods, along with great chariots and elephants, entered his mouth, terrifying and vast as the netherworld, with its palate turned upward.
As his army was being swallowed by the powerful Daitya, Śakra, his arms weary and with his mount, fell into despair.
He could not determine what should be done, and said to Janārdana: 'Is there anything left to be done hereafter?'
'On what basis do we, eager for battle, contend with this Daitya?' Then Hari, the noble-minded wielder of the thunderbolt, spoke these words.
'Now is not the time to abandon the fight out of fear, O Purandara. Quickly strengthen your great illusion against the enemy.'
'By me this Daitya has been marked, possessed and empowered. Do not fall into delusion, O Śakra; quickly recall your weapon, O lord.'
Then Śakra, king of the gods, enraged against the Daitya, with concentrated mind, released the Nārāyaṇa weapon at the Asura's chest.
Then that Nārāyaṇa weapon struck the Asura's chest; his heart, pierced by the great weapon, poured forth blood.
The son of the Asura, like a warrior leaving the battlefield, departed; by the power of that weapon, the Daitya's form was destroyed.
Then the Daitya vanished, unperceived in the sky; that lord of Daityas, stationed in the heavens, became invisible to weapons and senses.
He released the supreme cause of destruction upon the armies of the gods: spears, axes, discs, arrows, thunderbolts, and maces.
The fierce demon showered hatchets along with swords, slings, clubs, and missiles—unfailing and inexhaustible.
With those terrifying weapons hurled by the demons at the ranks of the gods, the earth was filled with arms and heads adorned with earrings.
With thighs like elephant trunks, elephants resembling mountains, broken chariots with shattered poles and wheels, together with their charioteers.
The earth became impassable, smeared with flesh and blood, swirling with rivers of gore, and heaps of corpses and bones.
Amidst heaps of headless bodies dancing, garments soaked in blood and mud, at the destruction of all embodied beings in the three worlds, jackals, vultures, and crows rejoiced greatly; sometimes a crow with a plucked eye shrieked over a corpse.
